The aim of this work was to assess the inactivation of Byssochlamys nivea ascospores in pineapple juice and nectar by combining pressure sequences involving high pressure cycles with relatively mild thermal processing. Abstract Marantaceae are a pantropically distributed family of perennial herbs and lianas in the understory of tropical rainforests. They are characterized by a unique pollen transfer mechanism. To understand its functional significance and evolution, field investigations have been conducted in Gabon. Data from 28 (of 35) species from Central Africa are achieved. The pollen–ovule ratio (34–140:1; exception Sarcophrynium 2.5:1) falls into the range of facultative autogamous species. In this work, the production of inhalable polymeric microparticles with modulable porosity is described. The starting polymeric material was the PHEA-g-RhB-g-PLA graft copolymer, which was suitably processed by spray drying (SD). Thanks to the addition of AB (weight percentage equal to 10 and 20 % with respect to the polymer) in the liquid feed, three biocompatible matrices were obtained with an increasing porosity in terms of pore volume (from 0.015 to 0.024 cc/g) and pore average diameter (from 1.942 to 3.060 nm), a decreasing tapped density values (from 0.75 to 0.50), and favorable aerosolization characteristics. P-glycoprotein (ABC subfamily B member 1, ABCB1) plays an important role at the blood–brain barrier (BBB) in promoting clearance of neurotoxic β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides from the brain into the blood. ABCB1 expression and activity were found to be decreased in the brains of Alzheimer disease patients. Treatment with drugs that induce cerebral ABCB1 activity may be a promising approach to delay the build-up of Aβ deposits in the brain by enhancing clearance of Aβ peptides from the brain. Abstract Both the cellular prion protein (PrPc) and the amyloid precursor protein (APP) are physiologically subjected to complex proteolytic processing events. While for APP the proteinases involved – alpha-, beta- and gamma-secretase – have been identified in vitro and in vivo, the cleavage of PrPc by now has been linked only to the shedding activity of the metalloproteinase ADAM10 and/or ADAM17 in cell culture. Here we show that neuronal overexpression of the alpha-secretase ADAM10 in mice reduces all PrPc species detected in the brain instead of leading to enhanced amounts of specific cleavage products of PrPc. In a subset of inherited retinal degenerations (including cone, cone-rod, and macular dystrophies), cone photoreceptors are more severely affected than rods; ABCA4 mutations are the most common cause of this heterogeneous class of disorders.
