International audience; A large set of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes (XMEs), such as the cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYPs), esterases and transferases, are highly expressed in mammalian olfactory mucosa (OM). These enzymes are known to catalyze the biotransformation of exogenous compounds to facilitate elimination. However, the functions of these enzymes in the olfactory epithelium are not clearly understood. Adult polyglucosan body myopathy.

This report describes a sporadic late-onset myopathy in two unrelated adults which was marked by polyglucosan inclusions surrounded by abnormally structured mitochondria, the latter finding a localized, possibly reactive phenomenon. The polyglucosan material was characterized by a battery of histochemical and enzyme histochemical techniques; revealed common antigenicity with Lafora bodies, corpora amylacea and muscle fiber inclusions in types IV and VII glycogenoses; and contained ubiquitin. Effect of gender on mitochondrial toxicity of Alzheimer's Abeta peptide.

The aim of this article is to review the role of mitochondria in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Additionally, the effect of gender on the incidence of Alzheimer's disease and the pathophysiological mechanisms involved will be discussed. Mitochondria, in the presence of Alzheimer's amyloid-beta peptide, increase the formation of reactive oxygen species which act both as damaging agents and also as signaling molecules. These radicals, in fact, unleash a mechanism involving the liberation of cytochrome c that leads to neuronal apoptosis. In recent research, apolipoprotein-E (apoE) polymorphism has been shown to influence the formation of neurofibrillary changes and the accumulation of beta/A4-amyloid, the histopathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Clinical studies associate the apoE allele epsilon4 with earlier onset of the disease, although the clinical speed of progression remains unchanged. Nondegradative ubiquitin chains attached to specific targets via Lysine 63 (K63) residues have emerged to play a fundamental role in synaptic function. The K63-specific deubiquitinase CYLD has been widely studied in immune cells and lately also in neurons. To better understand if CYLD plays a role in brain and synapse homeostasis, we analyzed the behavioral profile of CYLD-deficient mice. The molecular requirements for amylase release and the intracellular effects of botulinum A toxin and tetanus toxin on amylase release were investigated using rat pancreatic acinar cells permeabilized with streptolysin O. Micromolar concentrations of free Ca2+ evoked amylase release from these cells. Maximal release was observed in the presence of 30 microM free Ca2+.
