Androgenic-anabolic steroid effects on serum thyroid, pituitary and steroid hormones in athletes.

1987

Endocrine responses in seven power athletes were investigated during a 12 week strength training period, when the athletes were taking high doses of androgenic-anabolic steroids, and during the 13 weeks following drug withdrawal. During the use of steroids significant decreases (P less than 0.05 to 0.001) in the serum concentrations of thyroid stimulating hormone, thyroxine, triidothyronine, free thyroxine, and thyroid hormone-binding globulin (TBG) were found, whereas the value of triidothyronine uptake increased (P less than 0.001). In relation to the changes in the thyroid function parameters measured, we suggest that the primary target of androgen action was TBG biosynthesis. In five of…

Analysis of meat samples for anabolic steroids residues by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry.

2007

A rapid, specific and highly sensitive multi-residue method for the determination of anabolic steroid residues in bovine, pork and poultry muscle tissues was developed. The sample preparation involves enzymatic digestion followed by extraction with methanol. The crude extract was cleaned up by solid-phase extraction (SPE) combining C18 and NH2 columns. The detection was carried out by a highly sensitive liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC/ESI-MS/MS) method using both positive and negative ionization modes. Natural and synthetic steroids covering different polarities could be extracted, concentrated and purified using one single method. Mobile phase com…

Consumption of anabolic steroids in sport, physical activity and as a drug of abuse: an analysis of the scientific literature and areas of research.

2007

Objective The consumption of anabolic steroids (AS) has been growing continuously in recent years. It has gone beyond the sports world; AS are now widely used as drugs of abuse in connection with bodybuilding. This study sets out to assess the state of scientific research in the area. Design Bibliometrics were employed to evaluate the literature retrieved from the principal relevant bibliographic databases: MEDLINE, SportDiscus, the Science Citation Index Expanded and the Social Sciences Citation Index. The core journals were identified along with the leading authors and research groups and their institutional affiliations. Techniques based on social network analysis were applied in order t…

Nandrolone decanoate interferes with testosterone biosynthesis altering blood-testis barrier components

2017

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate whether nandrolone decanoate (ND) use affects testosterone production and testicular morphology in a model of trained and sedentary mice. A group of mice underwent endurance training while another set led a sedentary lifestyle and were freely mobile within cages. All experimental groups were treated with either ND or peanut oil at different doses for 6 weeks. Testosterone serum levels were measured via liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Western blot analysis and quantitative real‐time PCR were utilized to determine gene and protein expression levels of the primary enzymes implicated in testosterone biosynthesis and gene expression leve…

Chemometric and chemoinformatic analyses of anabolic and androgenic activities of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone analogues

2008

Predictive quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models of anabolic and androgenic activities for the testosterone and dihydrotestosterone steroid analogues were obtained by means of multiple linear regression using quantum and physicochemical molecular descriptors (MD) as well as a genetic algorithm for the selection of the best subset of variables. Quantitative models found for describing the anabolic (androgenic) activity are significant from a statistical point of view: R2 of 0.84 (0.72 and 0.70). A leave-one-out cross-validation procedure revealed that the regression models had a fairly good predictability [q2 of 0.80 (0.60 and 0.59)]. In addition, other QSAR models were …

Effects of chronic treatment with testosterone propionate on aggression and hormonal levels in intact male mice.

1998

Effects of testosterone propionate, an anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS), on aggression in gonadally intact male mice were examined. Animals were given weekly injections of 3.75, 7.5, 15, and 30 mg/kg of drug or sesame oil for 10 weeks. During the last 3 weeks, behavioral tests were conducted and at the end of the experiment, body, liver and testes weight and hormonal data were collected. The treatment had minimal behavioral and endocrine effects. It resulted in shorter latencies of 'threat' only in the last agonistic encounter, increases in testosterone levels and decreases in testes weight in a non-linear dose-dependant way. The action of treatment was different on threat and attack, the …

Lack of effects of anabolic-androgenic steroids on locomotor activity in intact male mice.

1999

Anabolic-androgenic steroid abusers have reported hyperactivity euphoria, and decreased fatigue, among other behavioral effects. It has been suggested that the effects of these substances on the central nervous system are similar to those of psychostimulants; however, the influence of steroids on general locomotor activity in laboratory animals is not well understood, especially how noncastrated male rodents are affected. In this study, spontaneous locomotor activity displayed by gonadally intact male mice submitted to several experimental conditions was analyzed. Different housing conditions (individual or cohabiting with a female), diverse steroids (testosterone propionate, nandrolone de…

Applying pattern recognition methods plus quantum and physico-chemical molecular descriptors to analyze the anabolic activity of structurally diverse…

2008

The great cost associated with the development of new anabolic-androgenic steroid (AASs) makes necessary the development of computational methods that shorten the drug discovery pipeline. Toward this end, quantum, and physicochemical molecular descriptors, plus linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to analyze the anabolic/androgenic activity of structurally diverse steroids and to discover novel AASs, as well as also to give a structural interpretation of their anabolic-androgenic ratio (AAR). The obtained models are able to correctly classify 91.67% (86.27%) of the AASs in the training (test) sets, respectively. The results of predictions on the 10% full-out cross-validation test al…

Use of dietary supplements and anabolic-androgenic steroids among Finnish adolescents in 1991-2005.

2009

Background : The aim of the study was to describe the prevalence, trends and associated factors of dietary supplements (DS) and anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) use among Finnish adolescents. Methods: The sample comprised 30 511 adolescents aged 12–18 years, of which 22 519 (74%) answered a questionnaire. We also studied associations between 14 socioeconomic, health and health behavioural variables and DS and AAS use by logistic regression. Results: The proportion of respondents using DS was 45% during the past year and it increased linearly by age. Vitamins (37%) and herbal products (13%) were the most common DSs. In 1991, 9% of the boys aged 16–18 years reported protein use, while the f…

Intended or Unintended Doping? A Review of the Presence of Doping Substances in Dietary Supplements Used in Sports

2017

Introduction: The use of dietary supplements is increasing among athletes, year after year. Related to the high rates of use, unintentional doping occurs. Unintentional doping refers to positive anti-doping tests due to the use of any supplement containing unlisted substances banned by anti-doping regulations and organizations, such as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The objective of this review is to summarize the presence of unlabeled doping substances in dietary supplements that are used in sports. Methodology: A review of substances/metabolites/markers banned by WADA in ergonutritional supplements was completed using PubMed. The inclusion criteria were studies published up until Se…
