Electron-TOF-analyser for complete momentum analysis in photoemission from surfaces
2001
Abstract We present a new method for momentum-selective imaging by means of a time-of-flight (TOF) technique. The instrument employs a time- and space-resolving delayline detector in combination with a parabolic electrostatic field and a drift space. We use this kind of spectrometer, to raise the efficiency of experiments, which are total momentum resolved. The main difference to conventional photoemission experiments using a rotatable spectrometer is the simultaneous detection of all emitted photoelectrons. In addition to this feature, the angular distribution should be directly visible, to observe solid state symmetries. In order to facilitate these requirements, we use a delayline detect…
Sensitivity of whole wood stable carbon and oxygen isotope values to milling procedures
2014
RATIONALE Milling of wood samples is a widely applied preparation method for pooling tree-rings from different trees or periods of several years for determination of δ13C and δ18O values. In this study, whole wood samples were milled using different procedures in order to evaluate potential effects of this preparation method on δ13C and δ18O values. METHODS Subsamples of a 5 cm3 wood piece of a single tree-ring from a lowland white fir were used. The samples were milled with different setups: (i) two and three stainless-steel balls, (ii) 3, 5 and 8 min milling time, and (iii) discontinuous and continuous milling. The δ13C values were measured using an elemental analyser connected to an IsoP…
Balances for Special Applications
2014
Some special applications and the corresponding balances are described in detail: laboratory balances, micro balances vacuum balances, thermo balances, magnetic suspension balances, oscillators, metrological comparators, tensiometer, suspended particles and elementary charge, mass analyser, density determination, particle analysis, magnetic susceptibility, post office and coin scales, body scales, and gravimeter. Vacuum equipment for balances, thermogravimetry, sorptometry, hygrometry, and moisture determination, gravimetric measurement of reaction kinetics, surface tension, ion traps, pyknometry, dust and particle concentration, grain size analysis are described. Gravimetric measurement of…
Mercury in fish products: what’s the best for consumers between bluefin tuna and yellowfin tuna?
2017
A total of 205 bluefin and yellowfin tuna samples were examined for mercury detection in order to verify possible differences and have a detailed risk assessment of the two tuna species. The results showed significant higher mercury concentration in muscle tissue of bluefin tuna respect yellowfin tuna (p < 0.001) with mean concentration of 0.84 mg/kg and maximum value of 1.94 mg/kg. These differences can be due the different biological and ecological aspects of the two tuna species and to different oceanographic aspects between Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean sea. The results obtained in this study suggest an advisable containment of the sources of pollution and further studies on the c…
Microspectroscopy and spectromicroscopy with photoemission electron microscopy using a new kind of imaging energy filter
2001
The use of an imaging retarding field analyser attached to the FOCUS IS-PEEM is described. This kind of energy filter is a simple, powerful tool to obtain microspectra from areas of down to about 1 μm using (V)UV and X-ray excitation sources. First results of microspectroscopy measured by excitation with a laboratory as well as a synchrotron X-ray source are presented.
Measurements of volcanic SO2 and CO2 fluxes by combined DOAS, Multi-GAS and FTIR observations: a case study from Turrialba and Telica volcanoes
2014
Over the past few decades, substantial progress has been made to overcome the technical difficulties of continuously measuring volcanic SO2 emissions. However, measurements of CO2 emissions still present many difficulties, partly due to the lack of instruments that can directly measure CO2 emissions and partly due to its strong atmospheric background. In order to overcome these difficulties, a commonly taken approach is to combine differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) by using NOVAC scan-DOAS instruments for continuous measurements of crateric SO2 emissions, and electrochemical/NDIR multi-component gas analyser system (multi-GAS) instruments for measuring CO2/SO2 ratios of exc…
KOSMOS 2017 Peru Side Experiment: nutrients, phytoplankton abundances, enzyme rates, photophysiology
2022
This data was collected during an short-term incubation experiment in March 2017 that investigated the response of a surface plankton community to upwelling. This experiment was carried in the framework of the SFB754-funded KOSMOS mesocosm study that took place in La Punta, Callao, Peru between February-April 2017. A total of six different treatments were used to disentangle chemical and biological characteristics of deep water that influence surface plankton blooms: 2 different deep water sources with different nutrient concentrations; 3 treatments to distinguish the effects of inorganic nutrients, organic nutrients and deep water microbial populations. Measured variables include inorganic…
