Analytical solution for the diffusion of a capacitor discharge generated magnetic field pulse in a conductor

Powerful forces arise when a pulse of a magnetic field in the order of a few tesla diffuses into a conductor. Such pulses are used in electromagnetic forming, impact welding of dissimilar materials and grain refinement of solidifying alloys. Strong magnetic field pulses are generated by the discharge current of a capacitor bank. We consider analytically the penetration of such pulse into a conducting half-space. Besides the exact solution we obtain two simple self-similar approximate solutions for two sequential stages of the initial transient. Exomorphism of jacobsite precipitates in bixbyite single crystals from the Thomas Range in Utah

Abstract Naturally occurring single crystals of bixbyite, (Fe,Mn)2O3, from the Thomas Mountain Range in Utah, U.S.A., were studied via (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (S)TEM. With up to 5 cm edge length, these mineral specimens are the largest bixbyite crystals found worldwide. Their hexahedral shapes are often modified by {211} facets at the corners and small {211} truncations along their cube edges. Characteristic lamellar defects, running parallel to the {100} planes, can be observed via TEM imaging. Refractive index controlled by film morphology and free carrier density in undoped ZnO through sol-pH variation

Abstract Zinc oxide thin films, prepared by the sol-gel process, were deposited on glass substrate using spin coating technique. The sol-pH effect on the optical parameters was studied for alkaline sol. The surface roughness was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and varied from 20 to 40 nm. The optical transmission measurements were carried out to evaluate the behavior of the extinction coefficient and the refractive index. An exponential decay of the refractive index ‘n’ as a function of wavelength was observed. The refractive index increases slightly when the pH increases to pH = 9.5 where it reaches its maximum. Thermal oxidation of the intermetallic phases Al 8 Mo 3 and AlMo 3

Abstract The thermal oxidation reactions of the intermetallic phases Al8Mo3 and AlMo3 were investigated and analyzed by ex-situ powder-x-ray diffraction (XRD), difference thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetry (TGA), and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The initial oxidation reactions in air were found to yield Al2O3 and AlMo3 in the case of Al8Mo3 (Tonset =725 °C), and MoO3 as well as Al8−xMo3 (Tonset =435 °C) for the pure intermetallic phase AlMo3, respectively. Thus, both intermetallic phases are coexisting in an equilibrium within a temperature range of 300 °C under oxidizing conditions. Positron trapping defects in free-volume investigation of Ge–Ga–S–CsCl glasses

Abstract Evolution of free-volume positron trapping defects caused by crystallization process in (80GeS 2 –20Ga 2 S 3 ) 100−х (СsCl) x , 0 ≤ x ≤ 15 chalcogenide-chalcohalide glasses was studied by positron annihilation lifetime technique. It is established that CsCl additives in Ge–Ga–S glassy matrix transform defect-related component spectra, indicating that the agglomeration of free-volume voids occurs in initial and crystallized (80GeS 2 –20Ga 2 S 3 ) 100−х (СsCl) x , 0 ≤ x ≤ 10 glasses. Ultrasonic nebulization inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry method for wine analysis

Abstract A methodology was developed to determine mineral elements in wines using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry combined with ultrasonic nebulization. The concentration of 36 elements (Al, B, Ba, Bi, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Dy, Er, Eu, Fe, Gd, K, La, Lu, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nd, Ni, Pb, Pr, Sb, Sc, Sm, Sr, Tb, Ti, Tm, V, Y, Yb, and Zn) was determined in 59 wine samples and used to distinguish between Brazilian and Spanish wines. Direct observation of elemental segregation in InGaN nanowires by X-ray nanoprobe

Using synchrotron radiation nanoprobe, this work reports on the elemental distribution in single Inx Ga1–xN nanowires (NWs) grown by molecular beam epitaxy directly on Si(111) substrates. Single NWs dispersed on Al covered sapphire were characterized by nano-X-ray fluorescence, Raman scattering and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Both Ga and In maps reveal an inhomogeneous axial distribution inside sin- gle NWs. The analysis of NWs from the same sample but with different dimensions suggests a decrease of In segregation with the reduction of NW diameter, while Ga distribution seems to remain unaltered. Normal and relaxor ferroelectric behavior in the Ba1−xPbx(Ti1−yZry)O3 solid solutions

Abstract Polycrystalline samples of Ba 1−x Pb x (Ti 1−y Zr y )O 3 (BPTZ) with x = 0.025 & 0.1 and 0.10 ≤ y ≤ 0.50 have been synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction technique. X-ray diffraction reveals the formation of single phase with tetragonal or cubic structure. Dielectric investigations were carried out in the temperature range from 80 to 445 K with frequencies range from 10 2 to 10 6  Hz. A broad dielectric anomaly coupled with the shift of dielectric maxima toward a higher temperature with increasing frequency indicates either a diffuse phase transition or relaxor behavior in some of these ceramics. High-Resolution Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy and Analysis of the ν1 Stretching Band of GeD4

The high-resolution stimulated Raman spectrum of the ν1 band of GeD4 with natural isotopic abundance germanium has been recorded. It has been analyzed as part of the ν1/ν3 stretching dyad.
