Determination of optical purity of phosphonic acid analogues of aromatic amino acids by capillary electrophoresis with alpha-cyclodextrin.

A simple and efficient method for the determination of enantiomeric purity of structurally diverse phosphonic and phosphinic acid analogues of phenylalanine and phenylglycine using capillary electrophoresis is presented. These preliminary studies indicated that the enantiomer separation is strongly dependent on the structure of the aminophosphonic acid.

Vitrification of polymer solutions as a function of solvent quality, analyzed via vapor pressures.

Vapor pressures (headspace sampling in combination with gas chromatography) and glass transition temperatures [differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)] have been measured for solutions of polystyrene (PS) in either toluene (TL) (10-70 degrees C) or cyclohexane (CH) (32-60 degrees C) from moderately concentrated solutions up to the pure polymer. As long as the mixtures are liquid, the vapor pressure of TL (good solvent) is considerably lower than that of CH (theta solvent) under other identical conditions. Free energy of solvation of solutes and their partition coefficients in methanol-water binary mixtures

A method is presented that permits semiquantitative estimation of the partitioning of any solute between any two media. The method is adapted to the simulation of multicomponent solvents. As an example, the free energies of solvation ΔG solv,aq o in methanol-water binary mixtures and the partition coefficientsP for organic solvent—aqueous solvent were calculated. The organic solvents studied were 1-octanol, cyclohexane and chloroform. Linear relationships were observed between the relative dielectric constant and the volume fraction of methanol in mixtures with water. 1H NMR studies of paramagnetic ferricytochrome c-551 from Pseudomonas aeruginosa at high pH: The role of histidine 16 in the spin transition

Abstract Cytochrome c-551 from the mesophile Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an electronic transfer protein that contains 82 amino-acid residues and a c-type heme as the prosthetic group with low spin Fe(II) in the reduced form and low spin Fe(III) in the oxidized form of cytochrome c-551. We have studied the electronic properties of ferricytochrome c-551 from P. aeruginosa at high pH (9–11.4) by means of paramagnetic 1H NMR spectra and the T1 and T2 values of isotropically shifted proton resonances. Method for evaluating the bioconversion of radioactive polyunsaturated fatty acids by use of reversed-phase liquid chromatography

Abstract Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography on a thermostatted octadecylsilyl column was used to separate mixtures of labelled polyunsaturated fatty acids (as their methyl esters) formed by successive desaturations and elongations of labelled linoleic (18:2 n - 6) or linolenic (18:3 n -3) acid by rat liver microsomes. Acetonitrile-water mixtures were used for elution of the esters. Unsaturated and saturated esters were detected by their refractive indices. The order of elution of fatty acid methyl esters in complex mixtures varies as a function of the chain length and unsaturation, analysis temperature, water concentration and solvent flow-rate. Gas chromatography of homologous esters

Abstract The gas chromatographic retention behaviour of the butanoyl and 2-, 3- and 4-chlorobutanoyl esters of C 3 —C 5 saturated aliphatic branched-chain and unsaturated C 3 —C 6 alcohols on SE-30 and OV-351 glass capillary columns operated iso-thermally at several temperatures is reported. Retention index increments at 80, 120 and 160°C show the effects of chain branching and the olefinic and acetylenic unsaturation in the alkyl chain and the effect of the position of the chlorine substituent in the acyl chain. The results are compared with the behaviour of the corresponding n -alkyl esters and the chlorinated propanoyl esters.

Chemical characterization of peat fulvic acid fractions

Abstract Milled peat fulvic acid (FA) preparation was fractionated by XAD-8 and conventional extraction methods. The fractions were further analyzed by IR and NMR and subjected to cupric oxide (CuO) oxidation. Carbohydrates of polydisperse FA were mostly not retained in the XAD-8 fractionation. The intensity of the signals due to double bonded carbons was much greater in the 13 C and proton NMR spectrum of the XAD-8 retained fraction than in the spectra of the XAD-8 non-retained or XAD-8 non-treated fractions. Abstract The oxidative deterioration of culinary oils and fats during episodes of heating associated with normal usage (80°C–300°C, 20–40 min) was monitored by FTIR spectroscopy. The thermal oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids during heating was studied by the determination of unsaturation percentage and trans isomers at various temperatures and heating times. The oxidative deterioration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in culinary oils and fats during episodes of heating associated with normal usage (80-300 degrees C, 20-40 min) has been monitored by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The thermal oxidation of PUFAs is a free radical chain reaction, in which hydroperoxides are generally recognized as the primary major products. Hydroperoxides of PUFAs are easily decomposed into a very complex mixture of secondary products with the decrease in unsaturation. Fast determination of prominent carotenoids in tomato fruits by CEC using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns.

In this study, the major carotenoids (beta-carotene and lycopene) present in tomato fruits were analyzed by CEC with a methacrylate ester-based monolithic column. The effects of the porogenic solvent ratio, and the hydrophobicity of bulk monomer employed were examined on carotenoids separations. A fast separation of these analytes was achieved in less than 5.0 min in a mobile phase containing 35% THF, 30% ACN, 30% methanol, and 5% of a 5 mM Tris aqueous buffer, pH 8, with lauryl methacrylate-based monoliths.
