Polymeric gegenions induced variability and mobility of amphiphilic supramolecular structures on solid substrates

Abstract The micromorphological variations of amphiphilic L -glutamate derivatives at air-substrate interfaces due to an adjacent mobile polymer matrix have been investigated via fluorescence microscopy. Adjusted monolayers of the L -glutamate derivatives have been transferred by LB technique out of different aggregation states onto various substrates. The substrates have been prepared by successive polymer preadsorption to the solid support. The influence of the adjacent polymer layers on the domain morphology as a function of water content and temperature has been examined intensively. A numerical-analytical model for the characterization of composites reinforced by carbon nanotubes

A mixed model, numerical-analytical, is presented that allows one to predict the elastic properties of carbon nanotube (CNT)/polymer composites containing a random distribution of CNTs, while taking account of the curvature that they show when immersed in the polymer. This hybrid approach is a significant advance over micromechanical modeling and can be applied to all nanostructured composites.

Dielectrophoresis as a tool for nanoscale DNA manipulation

The use of the dielectrophoresis as a tool for DNA manipulation is demonstrated experimentally, using both unmodified 48,500 base pairs long bacteriophage lambda dsDNA (λ-DNA), ∼16 μm in length and 414 base pairs long thiol modified natural dsDNA (avDNA), ∼140 nm in length. We show that both the dsDNA types used, are effectively directed between the planar gold electrodes by the positive dielectrophoresis while applying an AC voltage at frequencies between 500 kHz and 1 MHz. With high concentrations of dsDNA in buffer the attached dsDNA molecules are shown to form bundles or clumps (both λ-DNA and avDNA). Formation, phase composition, and transformations of Langmuir-Blodgett multi- and monolayers containing Fe

Mono- and multilayers of ferric stearate were formed by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Thermodesorption of the hydrocarbon chains results in well defined thin oxidic films. Their reduction to Fe2+ and α-Fe was followed by conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy. Resonance lines can be observed even if the Fe coverage is less than one monolayer.

Production of titanium ion beams in an ECR ion source

Abstract Intensive highly charged Ti ion beams were successfully produced in the 14 GHz ECR ion source at the Accelerator Laboratory, University of Jyvaskyla (JYFL). The Ti beams were produced using the MIVOC technique, i.e. by allowing the vapor of an organic compound containing titanium to diffuse into the ion source at room temperature. After optimizing the source parameters the intensity of the 48 Ti 11+ ion beam reached a value of 45 μA.

Photon yields and decay times of cross luminescence in ionic crystals

The authors report on the scintillation properties of the ternary inorganic crystals KMgF/sub 3/, KYF/sub 4/:Rb, K/sub 2/YF/sub 5/, KLuF/sub 4/, RbMgF/sub 3/, KZnF/sub 3/, BaTm/sub 2/F/sub 8/, LiYF/sub 4/:Nd, and BaF/sub 2/:Rb. The scintillation light output of these crystals was estimated from the X-ray-induced emission spectra. Optical absorption spectra and decay time spectra were also measured and are presented. The first four crystals produced cross-luminescence (CL) with a decay time of about 1.5 ns. CL was not observed for the other crystals. >

Neutron scattering characterization of homopolymers and graft-copolymer micelles in supercritical carbon dioxide

Abstract Superficial fluids (SCF) are becoming an attractive alternative to the liquid solvents traditionally used as polymerization media [1]. As the synthesis proceeds, a wide range of colloidal aggregates form, but there has hitherto been no way to measure such structures directly. We have applied small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to characterize such systems, and although SCF polymerizations are carried out at high pressures, the penetrating power of the neutron beam means that typical cell windows are virtually transparent. Abstract A study by FT-IR spectroscopy which aims to compare the stability of five polymers, Araldit XW396/XW 397, Vitralit 7256, Loctite 350, Desmodur N 75/Viacryl SM 564/65 and Krafft silicone commonly used in the restoration of archaeological glass objects when subjected to thermal ageing, UV light ageing and cyclic ageing in SO 2 pollutant chamber has been carried out. Abstract New tetrazole compounds were synthesized and characterised by NMR and FTIR spectroscopy as well as by single crystal X-ray diffraction. We present in this paper mono- and ditetrazoles, which represent a versatile class of building blocks for the formation of mononuclear iron(II) complexes with monotetrazoles as terminal ligands as well as iron(II) coordination polymers with ditetrazoles as bridging ligands. Especially, the series of α,ω-bis[tetrazol-1-yl]-alkanes open the field of fascinating supramolecular structures with spin transition properties.
