Calculations and measurements of the spectral radiance of the solar aureole

The application of the theory of primary scattering to describe and interpret the spectral distribution of the sky radiance is discussed. It is shown that within the solar aureole the influence of the scattering of higher order can be neglected. Theoretical calculations of the spectral distribution of the sky radiance, carried out by Bullrich et al . (1965) based on an exponential aerosol size distribution with an upper limiting particle radius r = 10 ?, have been extended to r = 150 ?. The detailed study of the influence of these “giant” particles revealed that aerosol particles of r >30 ? have no effect on the sky radiation any more. In January 2013, North China Plain experienced several serious haze events. Cimel sunphotometer measurements at seven sites over rural, suburban and urban regions of North China Plain from 1 to 30 January 2013 were used to further our understanding of spatial-temporal variation of aerosol optical parameters and aerosol radiative forcing (ARF). It was found that Aerosol Optical Depth at 500 nm (AOD500 nm) during non-pollution periods at all stations was lower than 0.30 and increased significantly to greater than 1.00 as pollution events developed. Aerosol optical properties and direct radiative forcing based on measurements from the China Aerosol Remote Sensing Network (CARSNET) in eastern China

Aerosol pollution in eastern China is an unfortunate consequence of the region's rapid economic and industrial growth. Here, sun photometer measurements from seven sites in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) from 2011 to 2015 were used to characterize the climatology of aerosol microphysical and optical properties, calculate direct aerosol radiative forcing (DARF) and classify the aerosols based on size and absorption. Bimodal size distributions were found throughout the year, but larger volumes and effective radii of fine-mode particles occurred in June and September due to hygroscopic growth and/or cloud processing. Sensitivity of shortwave radiative fluxes to the vertical distribution of aerosol single scattering albedo in the presence of a desert dust layer

Abstract The aim of this work is to quantify the sensitivity of shortwave radiative fluxes to changes in the vertical distribution of aerosol absorption, taken into account through the aerosol Single Scattering Albedo (SSA). The case study represents a real atmospheric situation with a desert dust layer (DDL) in the mid troposphere over an urban Boundary Layer (BL) observed at Rome on 20 June 2007. A moderately high aerosol optical depth (AOD), 0.292 at 550 nm, and low Angstrom exponent of 0.30 were measured.
