The mechanism of formation of 3H,9H-Pyrano[3,4-b]indol-3-ones from 3-indolalkanoic acids

The mechanism of the formation of 1-methyl-3H,9H-pyrano[3,4-b]indol-3-one (4) from the corresponding 3-indolacetic acid 1 is discussed. The suggested mechanism is substantiated by the isolation of a stable intermediate 2 and its transformations in the presence of acetic anhydride and/or Lewis acids.

Polyethylene (a 1:1 blend of m-LLDPE and z-LLDPE) double layer silicate clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt extrusion using a twin screw extruder. Maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA) was used as a compatibiliser to enhance the dispersion of two organically modified monmorilonite clays (OMMT): Closite 15A (CL15) and nanofill SE 3000 (NF), and natural montmorillonite (NaMMT). The clay dispersion and morphology obtained in the extruded nanocomposite samples were fully characterised both after processing and during photo-oxidation by a number of complementary analytical techniques. The dispersion of organo-layered double hydroxides (O-LDH) in functionalized polyolefins (POs) is investigated. Two different polyethylene matrices (maleic anhydride (MAH) and diethyl maleate functionalized) are tested and a hydrogenated fatty acid modified LDH is used. The attention is focused on evidencing the interaction between the functional groups of the polymer and the O-LDH through FT-IR. Moreover, a combination of solvent fractionation, morphological, and rheological characterizations enables to gain a deeper insight into the structure of these composites. Covalently attached polymer mono- and multilayers on silanized glass substrates

Abstract Applying grazing incidence FTIR and ellipsometry, the reaction of poly [(1-methyl-vinyl isocyanate)-alt-(maleic anhydride)](IAP) with amino-silanized glass and silicon oxide surfaces has been investigated. A reactive surface containing isocyanate and anhydride groups was formed after the adsorption of the polymer. The layer could be further functionalized using 2-aminoethanol. Multilayers could be built up by adsorbing a second layer of IAP onto an already reacted first layer of IAP.

At the same way, polymer/clay nanocomposites show this problem because of different chemical nature of the polymer matrix and of the clay. Abstract Miscible semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPN) of varying composition are prepared by crosslinking polystyrene containing few maleic anhydride groups with a diamine in the presence of linear poly(vinylmethylether) (PVME). The resulting PVME-c-P(ScoMA) semi-IPNs are characterized by their thermal and thermomechanical behaviour. Comparison with the corresponding uncrosslinked material proves that weak crosslinking has a negligible effect on the location of the glass transition as measured by d.s.c. Polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) and polyethylene are incompatible polymers and their blends show, in general, poor properties. Compatibilization is then a necessary step to obtain blends with good mechanical and barrier properties. In this work different compatibilizing agents were used, i.e. a maleic anhydride elastomer and some new products containing graft-copolymers having polyester segments grafted onto polyethylene backbone chains. Both the functionalized elastomer and the new products drastically improve the morphology and the ductility of the blend. Abstract A series of carboxylic acid derivatives 1–6 containing a second interacting function have been converted into the corresponding O -protonated species or acylium ions upon treatment with 96% sulfuric acid or oleum, respectively, at room temperature. The resulting stable cations have been spectroscopically characterized and submitted to irradiation. Cis-trans photoisomerization was observed in the ionic speciesderived from trans -crotonic, fumaric and maleic acids, and maleic anhydride.
