Structure and Mechanical Properties of Melt Intercalated Po1lypropylene–Organomontmorillonite Nanocomposites
2010
The preparation and properties of polymer nanocomposites, obtained by melt-compounding of polypropylene (PP) and organomontmorillonite (OMMT) modified by different alkyl ammonium salts, are described. A copolymer of maleic anhydride and PP was used as a compatibilizing additive. Nanocomposites with OMMT content of 1, 5 and 10 wt% were prepared and tested. The influence of OMMT content on the tensile stress–strain curves, elastic modulus, yield and tensile strength, and ultimate elongation of the nanocomposites is determined. The results of measuring the microhardness and impact strength of polymer nanocomposites are presented. Long-term creep tests were performed to predict the long-term de…
Recycling of inside upholstery of end-of-life cars
2005
A model study for the recycling of the interior upholstery plastic parts of end-of-life cars has been carried out by reprocessing the homogenized scraps of an upholstery farm in the presence of different compatibilizer precursors, such as an ethylene-glycidylmethacrylate copolymer (EGMA), a maleic anhydride functionalized thermoplastic elastomer (SEBS-MA), etc. The investigated scraps contained recycled polyethylene (from agricultural uses) and poly(ethylene terephthalate), as the main components, plus minor proportions of polypropylene, polyamide-6, and other additives, including an ethylene copolymer (EC), probably an ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer, which is used to compatibilize the car…
Stiffness and strength of flax fiber/polymer matrix composites
2006
Flax fiber composites with thermoset and thermoplastic polymer matrices have been manufactured and tested for stiffness and strength under uniaxial tension. Flax/polypropylene and flax/maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene composites are produced from compound obtained by coextrusion of granulated polypropylene and flax fibers, while flax fiber mat/vinylester and modified acrylic resin composites are manufactured by resin transfer molding. The applicability of rule-of-mixtures and orientational averaging based models, developed for short fiber composites, to flax reinforced polymers is considered. POLYM. Novel epoxy formulations for high energy radiation curable composites
2005
Abstract It has been widely recognised that high energy radiation can be effectively applied to the cure of epoxy resins in applications as composite matrices or structural adhesives with improvements in product quality and/or reduction in production costs. In the presence of suitable initiators, polymerisation of epoxies occurs via cationic mechanism, thus restricting the choice of the resin system components to species which do not contain electron donor groups. The present investigation is aimed to identify suitable co-monomers to be formulated with an epoxy resin, resulting in different cure reaction kinetics and application properties of the cured resin. In particular, four different a…
Chain-extending of Hydroxytelechelic Polybutadiene: Synthesis and Characterization
2010
Extension of hydroxytelechelic polybutadiene oligomers ( 3200 g/mol) is performed in mild conditions, in order to avoid backbone modifications, using succinic anhydride or methylenedicyclohexyl diisocyanate. The two routes present significative extension of the initial oligomers. Extension through the anhydride route, in the presence of DCC and DMAP, leads to new hydroxytelechelic oligomers ( 8000 g/mol). Extension through the diisocyanate route, catalyzed by DBTL at 65°C leads to hydroxytelechelic oligomers of higher average molecular weight ( 20000 g/mol). New materials are characterized by FTIR/1H-NMR and changes in their Tg according to , are discussed. The influence of reaction time on…
CuCl catalyzed radical cyclisation of N-alpha-perchloroacyl-ketene-N,S-acetals: a new way to prepare disubstituted maleic anhydrides
2012
The discovery that cycloalkanes can form thermomorphic systems with typical polar organic solvents has led to the development of less-polar electrolyte solutions. Their mixing and separation can be regulated reversibly at a moderate temperature range. The phase switching temperature can be controlled by changing the solvent compositions. While biphasic conditions are maintained below the phase switching temperature, conductive monophasic conditions as less-polar electrolyte solutions are obtained above the phase switching temperature. After the electrochemical transformations, biphasic conditions are reconstructed below the phase switching temperature, facilitating the separation of cycloal…
Role of SH-Groups and S-S Bridges in the Main Subunit (1/12 Molecule) of Spirographis Spallanzanii Chlorocruorin
1986
In all species of annelids described, the extracellular hemoglobins show (by electron microscopy) the same quaternary structure constituted by twelve identical subunits. The fine structure of the 1/12 subunit is not well resolved and several models have been proposed for it (2).
