The viviparous females of Oestrus ovis deposit first-stage larvae (L1) directly in the nasal orifices of sheep and goats. L1 actively penetrate through the nasal orifices and colonize the cornets and septum where they will develop. Once located at the ethmoid level, L1 molt to stage 2 larvae (L2). L2 further ascend from the nasal cavity to the frontal sinuses where they molt to stage 3 larvae (L3). Primary oral myiasis : a case report

Myiasis is the infestation of live human and vertebrate animal with dipterous larvae which feed on the host?s dead or living tissue. A case of oral myiasis in the maxillary anterior region in a 42-year-old female with neurologic deficit caused by the larvae (maggots) of Musca Nebulo (Family Diptera) is reported. The treatment consisted of manual removal of the larvae by topical application of turpentine oil, oral therapy with ivermectin and surgical debridement of the oral wound.

Color polymorphisms have become a major topic in evolutionary biology and substantial efforts have been devoted to the understanding of the mechanisms responsible for originating such colorful systems. Within-morph continuous variation, on the other hand, has been neglected in most of the studies. Here, we combine spectrophotometric/visual modeling and genetic data to study the mechanisms promoting continuous variation within categorical color morphs of Podarcis muralis. Our results suggest that intra-morph variability in the pterin-based orange morph is greater compared to white and yellow morphs. Retinoid dynamics in chicken eye during pre- and postnatal development.

Changes in the steady state level of retinols, retinaldehydes and retinyl esters in the trans and 11-cis forms and trans retinoic acid were measured in whole chicken eye during development from day 6 in ovo to day 3 post-hatch. These retinoids, quantified by different HPLC systems, were detected in this time sequence: trans-retinol and trans-retinyl esters in the first week in ovo, 11-cis-retinol in the second week. The highest level of 11-cis-retinaldehyde and 11-cis-retinyl esters was reached at the end of development in ovo; however, their levels increased further after hatching. The evolutionary dynamics of adaptive virginity, sex-allocation and altruistic helping in haplodiploid animals

In haplodiploids, females can produce sons from unfertilized eggs without mating. However, virgin reproduction is usually considered to be a result of a failure to mate, rather than an adaptation. Here, we build an analytical model for evolution of virgin reproduction, sex-allocation, and altruistic female helping in haplodiploid taxa. We show that when mating is costly (e.g., when mating increases predation risk), virginity can evolve as an adaptive female reproductive strategy. Furthermore, adaptive virginity results in strongly divergent sex-ratios in mated and virgin queen nests ("split sex ratios"), which promotes the evolution of altruistic helping by daughters in mated queen nests. The early life stages are often the most vulnerable to heavy mortality due to environmental conditions. The deer ked (Lipoptena cervi Linnaeus, 1758) is an invasive insect ectoparasite of cervids that spends an important period of the life cycle outside host as immobile pupa. During winter, dark-coloured pupae drop off the host onto the snow, where they are exposed to environmental temperature variation and predation as long as the new snowfall provides shelter against these mortality factors. 0962-1075 (Print) Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; The accumulation of transcripts from two adult-specific cuticular genes (ACP-20 and ACP-22) is shown to be modified after addition of exogenous 20-hydroxyecdysone. In the continuous presence of high levels of the hormone, the expression of ACP-20 gene is significantly weaker than that of untreated controls, while ACP-22 expression is 2.5-fold increased. During active synthesis of the ACP messages, a 0.5 microg 20-hydroxyecdysone injection causes a rapid 2-fold increase in ACP-22 mRNA and is not able to repress ACP-20 mRNA accumulation.
