Iron Oxide Superparticles with Enhanced MRI Performance by Solution Phase Epitaxial Growth

2018

Organized three-dimensional (3D) nanomaterial architectures are promising candidates for applications in optoelectronics, catalysis, or theranostics owing to their anisotropy and advanced structural features that allow tailoring their physical and chemical properties. The synthesis of such complex but well-organized nanomaterials is difficult because the interplay of interfacial strain and facet-specific reactivity must be considered. Especially the magnetic anisotropy with controlled size and morphology plays a decisive role for applications like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and advanced data storage. We present a solution phase seed mediated synthesis of colloidal, well dispersible ir…

A three-dimensional grain boundary formulation for microstructural modeling of polycrystalline materials

2013

Abstract A three-dimensional grain boundary formulation is presented for the analysis of polycrystalline microstructures. The formulation is based on a boundary integral representation of the elastic problem for the single grains of the polycrystalline aggregate and it is expressed in terms of the intergranular fields, namely displacements and tractions, that play an important role in polycrystalline micromechanics. The artificial polycrystalline morphology is represented using the Hardcore Voronoi tessellation, which is simple to generate and able to embody the main statistical features of polycrystalline microstructures. The details of the microstructure generation and meshing, which invo…

Raman spectroscopic method for determining the crystallinity of polyethylene

1978

The Raman spectrum of partially crystalline polyethylene can be described as a superposition of three components, which originate from the orthorhombic crystalline phase, a meltlike amorphous phase, and a disordered phase of anisotropic nature, where chains are stretched but have lost their lateral order. The mass fractions involved in the three phases can be derived directly from the integral intensities of characteristic bands without an additional calibration procedure. A comparison of the results obtained for a variety of samples shows agreement with the crystallinities derived from the density, and the small-angle and wide-angle x-ray diagrams. Data indicate that the disordered anisotr…

Faceting and structural anisotropy of nanopatterned CdO(110) layers

2005

CdO(110) layers with a self-organized surface structure have been grown on (10math0) sapphire (m plane) substrates by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. The epitaxial relationships between layer and substrate have been determined and a crystallographic model that accounts for the CdO in-plane orientation, which results in a reduced lattice mismatch when the CdO[001] direction is perpendicular to the sapphire c axis, has been proposed. Although the measured lattice parameters indicate that the layers are almost fully relaxed, an anisotropic mosaicity is detected with symmetrical rocking curves attaining minimum values when measured along the CdO[math10] direction. The layer morphology consis…

AbstractMaterials that demonstrate long-range magnetic order are synonymous with information storage and the electronics industry, with the phenomenon commonly associated with metals, metal alloys or metal oxides and sulfides. A lesser known family of magnetically ordered complexes are the monometallic compounds of highly anisotropic d-block transition metals; the ‘transformation’ from isolated zero-dimensional molecule to ordered, spin-canted, three-dimensional lattice being the result of through-space interactions arising from the combination of large magnetic anisotropy and spin-delocalization from metal to ligand which induces important intermolecular contacts. Here we report the effect…

Two-color holographic-grating formation in amorphous As_2S_3 films

1998

A detailed experimental study of the holographic gratings recorded in nonannealed amorphous As2S3 films by 514.5-nm light in the presence of 632.8-nm readout light is carried out. A strong influence of a continuous 632.8-nm readout is found. The dependences of the maximal first-order diffraction efficiency and the corresponding specific recording energy on the holographic grating period were studied in a wide range of periods from 0.40 to 70.0 μm for 2-yr-old films. The obtained results are discussed in terms of photoinduced structural changes, relaxational structural changes, photoinduced anisotropy, and photoinduced recharging of the localized states in the bandgap. The photoinduced sulph…

Testing laboratory methods to determine the anisotropy of saturated hydraulic conductivity in a sandy–loam soil

2009

Abstract Anisotropy, a (the log of the ratio of horizontal to vertical conductivity, log 10 ( K h / K v )), of saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, K s , affects transport processes in soil but is not routinely measured, probably because practical and validated methods are lacking. The objective of this investigation was to determine the effects of different constant-head laboratory and sampling procedures on anisotropy of saturated hydraulic conductivity measurements. The sequence of K s measurements was varied (vertical conductivity, K v , first, then horizontal, K h , second and vice versa) for an experimental set-up considering five variables: 1) water ponding type (Mariotte or siphon…

Radiation Induced Defects in Yttrium Aluminium Perovskite

2000

The yttrium aluminium perovskite single crystals YAlO3 (YAP) doped with rare -earth ions belong to the most prospective materials of solid-state laser engineering. Laser based of YAlO3 crystals have the advantage in comparison with yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG). The main of them consists in anisotropy of optical properties [1], which are stipulated by the low symmetry of orthoaluminate crystals. Continuos wave (CW) laser action at 549.6 nm was achieved in 1% Er:YAP crystal at below 77 K [2]. The YAP:Nd allows to obtain a CW generation at 1079 nm, 1340 nm and 1440 nm [3, 4]. It is known, that the color center can completely suppress laser generation in the crystal.

Modelling intergranular and transgranular micro-cracking in polycrystalline materials

2018

Abstract In this work, a grain boundary formulation for intergranular and transgranular micro-cracking in three-dimensional polycrystalline aggregates is presented. The formulation is based on the displacement and stress boundary integral equations of solid mechanics and it has the advantage of expressing the polycrystalline problem in terms of grain boundary variables only. The individual grains within the polycrystalline morphology are modelled as generally anisotropic linear elastic domains with random spatial orientation. Transgranular micro-cracking is assumed to occur along specific cleavage planes, whose orientation in space within the grains depend upon the crystallographic lattice.…
