Characterization of non-polar ZnO layers with positron annihilation spectroscopy

We applied positron annihilation spectroscopy to study the effect of growth polarity on the vacancy defects in ZnO grown by metal-organic vapor phase deposition on sapphire. Both c-plane and a-plane ZnO layers were measured, and Zn vacancies were identified as the dominant defects detected by positrons. The results are qualitatively similar to those of earlier experiments in GaN. The Zn vacancy concentration decreases in c-plane ZnO by almost one order of magnitude (from high 10 cm−3 to low 10 cm−3) when the layer thickness is increased from 0.5 to 2 μm. Characterization of the atmospheric muon flux in IceCube

Muons produced in atmospheric cosmic ray showers account for the by far dominant part of the event yield in large-volume underground particle detectors. The IceCube detector, with an instrumented volume of about a cubic kilometer, has the potential to conduct unique investigations on atmospheric muons by exploiting the large collection area and the possibility to track particles over a long distance. Through detailed reconstruction of energy deposition along the tracks, the characteristics of muon bundles can be quantified, and individual particles of exceptionally high energy identified. Current density maps, magnetizability, and nuclear magnetic shielding tensors of bis-heteropentalenes. II. Furo-furan Isomers

Magnetic susceptibility and nuclear magnetic shielding at the nuclei of bis-heteropentalenes formed by two furan units ([2,3-b], [3,2-b], [3,4-b], and [3,4-c] isomers) have been computed by several approximated techniques and a large Gaussian basis set to achieve near Hartree–Fock estimates. Ab initio models of the ring currents induced by a magnetic field normal to the molecular plane were obtained for the three isomeric systems of higher symmetry, showing that the π electrons give rise to intense diamagnetic circulation. The π currents are responsible for enhanced magnetic anisotropy and strong out-of-plane proton deshielding. The theoretical findings are used to build up a “diatropicity …

Role of geometry and anisotropic diffusion for modelling PO2 profiles in working red muscle

A 3-dimensional analytical model of O2 diffusion in heavily working muscle is proposed which considers anisotropic, myoglobin (Mb)-facilitated O2 diffusion inside the muscle fiber and a carrier-free layer separating erythrocytes and fiber. The model is used to study the effects of some commonly applied simplifying assumptions (reduced dimensionality, neglected anisotropy) on the resulting PO2 distributions: (1) In order not to underestimate PO2 drops near erythrocytes, modelling O2 transport in 3 dimensions is important. Assessment of lung microstructure with magnetic resonance imaging of hyperpolarized Helium-3

Magnetic resonance imaging of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of hyperpolarized Helium-3 is a new technique for probing pulmonary microstructure in vivo. The aim of this study was the assessment of potential sources of systematic errors of the ADC measurement. The influence of macroscopic motion was determined by measurements at two different delays after initiating the breath-hold, and before and after cardiac arrest. Abstract In this paper, six new invariants associated with an anisotropic material made of one fiber family are calculated by presenting a systematic constructive and original approach. Some overdetermined problems related to the anisotropic capacity

Abstract We characterize the Wulff shape of an anisotropic norm in terms of solutions to overdetermined problems for the Finsler p-capacity of a convex set Ω ⊂ R N , with 1 p N . In particular we show that if the Finsler p-capacitary potential u associated to Ω has two homothetic level sets then Ω is Wulff shape. Moreover, we show that the concavity exponent of u is q = − ( p − 1 ) / ( N − p ) if and only if Ω is Wulff shape.

Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in sNN=2.76 TeV Pb–Pb collisions

We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semicentral √sNN = 2.76 TeV Pb–Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as vch jet 2 . Jet finding is performed employing the anti-kT algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Measurements of mixed harmonic cumulants in Pb–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV

Correlations between moments of different flow coefficients are measured in Pb–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. These new measurements are based on multiparticle mixed harmonic cumulants calculated using charged particles in the pseudorapidity region |η|<0.8 with the transverse momentum range 0.2<pT<5.0 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of correlations between two flow coefficients as well as the correlations between three flow coefficients, both in terms of their second moments, are shown. Recent results from PHENIX on the evolution of hot QCD

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider’s (RHIC) energy scan program explores the phase transition between the hadron gas and the quark gluon plasma phases by varying center-of-mass energies from √sNN = 7.7 to 200 GeV and using various system sizes. The nuclear modification factor of π0 and the azimuthal anisotropy of charged hadrons were measured in Au+Au collisions at c.m. energies √sNN = 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV. In addition, we present recent results of direct photon yield and anisotropy measurements in Au+Au collisions at c.m. energy √sNN = 200 GeV.
