Formation and evolution of self-organized Au nanorings on indium-tin-oxide surface

2011

This work reports on the formation of Au nanoclusters and on their evolution in nanoring structures on indium-tin-oxide surface by sputtering deposition and annealing processes. The quantification of the characteristics of the nanorings (surface density, depth, height, and width) is performed by atomic force microscopy. The possibility to control these characteristics by tuning annealing temperature and time is demonstrated establishing relations which allow to set the process parameters to obtain nanostructures of desired morphological properties for various technological applications. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

An enhanced memetic differential evolution in filter design for defect detection in paper production.

2008

This article proposes an Enhanced Memetic Differential Evolution (EMDE) for designing digital filters which aim at detecting defects of the paper produced during an industrial process. Defect detection is handled by means of two Gabor filters and their design is performed by the EMDE. The EMDE is a novel adaptive evolutionary algorithm which combines the powerful explorative features of Differential Evolution with the exploitative features of three local search algorithms employing different pivot rules and neighborhood generating functions. These local search algorithms are the Hooke Jeeves Algorithm, a Stochastic Local Search, and Simulated Annealing. The local search algorithms are adap…

A parallel simulated annealing approach to the K shortest loopless paths problem

1997

The k shortest loopless paths problem is a significant combinatorial problem which arises in many contexts. When the size of the networks is very large the exact algorithms fail to find the best solution in a reasonable time. The aim of this paper is to suggest parallel efficient algorithms to obtain a good approximation of the solution to the k shortest loopless paths problem between two arbitrary nodes, when the network size is large. The heuristic used is known in literature as Simulated Annealing. Preliminary tests have been conducted for evaluating the validity of the proposed algorithms. The quality of the obtained results represents a significant base for further experimentations.

Electrical transport in carbon black-epoxy resin composites at different temperatures

2013

Citation: J. Appl. Phys. 114, 033707 (2013); doi: 10.1063/1.4815870 (Received 3 May 2013; accepted 27 June 2013; published online 17 July 2013) Results of broadband electric/dielectric properties of different surface area—carbon black/epoxy resin composites above the percolation threshold are reported in a wide temperature range (25–500 K). At higher temperatures (above 400 K), the electrical conductivity of composites is governed by electrical transport in polymer matrix and current carriers tunneling from carbon black clusters to polymer matrix. The activation energy of such processes decreases when the carrier concentration increases, i.e., with the increase of carbon black concentration…

Tuning the dielectric properties of hafnium silicate films

2007

The influence of Si concentration in hafnium silicate dielectrics on thermal stability and dielectric permittivity was analyzed. A phase diagram was developed using GIXRD and FTIR measurement. The stabilization of the ''higher-k'' cubic/tetragonal phase for annealing temperatures up to 1000^oC with a steady increase in capacitance was demonstrated for Hf"0"."9"4Si"0"."0"6O"2 films. It was also shown that the stabilization of nano-crystalline Hf"0"."8"0Si"0"."2"0O"2 films can be realized for annealing temperatures up to 900^oC. The influence of TiN electrodes on the dielectric constant and the leakage current characteristic was also investigated. A permittivity increase for annealing tempera…

Guanine Assemblies on the Au(111) Surface: A Theoretical Study

2013

It was found previously [Small2009, 5, 1952 and Angew. Chem., Int. Ed.2005, 44, 2270] that guanine molecules when assembled in a vacuum on the Au(111) surface at room temperature form a hydrogen-bonded network consisting of guanine quartets of the same chirality; this was supported by ground-state density functional theory (DFT) gas-phase calculations. In this Article, we re-examine this system and show that many more (almost equally stable) both homo- and heterochiral structures are possible; however, the homochiral structure observed experimentally becomes definitely the most favorable only if the vibrational contribution to the free energy is accounted for. Interaction with the gold surf…

Direct observation of strain-induced non-equilibrium grain boundaries

2015

Abstract The grain boundary (GB) wetting by the melt and second solid phase has been studied in the Sn–Pb system both in equilibrium conditions and during continuous strain. The percentage of Sn/Sn GBs completely wetted by the melt increases from 80% at eutectic temperature Te=183 °C to 100% at 220 °C. The percentage of Pb/Pb GBs completely wetted by the melt increases from 0% at Te to 100% at 270 °C. Below Te only incomplete wetting of Pb/Pb GBs by solid Sn and Sn/Sn GBs by solid Pb has been observed after long annealing. However, during strain the lattice dislocations are continuously absorbed by GBs increasing the GB energy. As a result, the complete wetting of such non-equlibrium Sn/Sn …

Up-conversion luminescence dependence on structure in zirconia nanocrystals

2013

The zirconia samples containing two different concentrations of Er and Yb dopants were prepared using the Sol–Gel method and up-conversion luminescence was studied using the time-resolved techniques. The up-conversion luminescence depends on the oxygen content in surrounding gasses during annealing as well as on the annealing temperature. These dependencies indicate that ZrO2 intrinsic defects annealing and generation, phase transition as well as dopant redistribution take place. The possible role of these processes on up-conversion luminescence is discussed. The results of experiments confirmed that the annealing temperature has a crucial influence on up-conversion luminescence for samples…

Phase Transitions in Prequenched Mesomorphic Isotactic Polypropylene during Heating and Annealing Processes As Revealed by Simultaneous Synchrotron S…

2011

Time-resolved simultaneous synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) technique was used to investigate the phase transitions in prequenched mesomorphic isotactic polypropylene (iPP) samples during heating and annealing processes, respectively. For the heating process, it is shown that the mesomorphic-to-monoclinic phase transition is relatively faster for the mesomorphic iPP sample obtained with the high quenching rate than that with the low quenching rate. For the former, the stability of α-monoclinic crystals formed during heating is relatively higher. As for the annealing process, WAXD and SAXS data illustrate that the higher the annealing te…

Erroneous p-type assignment by Hall effect measurements in annealed ZnO films grown on InP substrate

2013

We report on incorrect carrier type identification achieved by Hall effect measurements performed on ZnO films grown by pulsed laser deposition on InP substrates and subsequently annealed for 1 h at 600 C in air. While Hall measurements, after post-growth annealing, reveal a change in the electrical properties of the films, from n-type to p-type, both photocurrent-based and standard C V measurements performed on the same samples show no change in the native n-type doping of the ZnO films. A possible interpretation of the two results is reported. In particular, p-type conductivity observed by Hall effect may be ascribed to a highly conductive thin layer formed during the annealing process at…
