Post UV irradiation annealing of E’ centers in silica controlled by H2 diffusion

2004

Abstract We investigate the isothermal annealing of E′ centers generated by UV photons (266 nm) of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser in two natural silica types differing for their OH content. Electron spin resonance and absorption spectra recorded at room temperature at different delays from the laser exposure evidenced a partial reduction of E′ centers, more pronounced in the wet silica. These post irradiation kinetics complete within 10 5 s, regardless the silica type, and they are consistent with a diffusion limited reaction between the E′ centers and the molecular hydrogen H 2 . Analysis of our data is done by theoretical fits using the Waite's equation and compared with the H 2 diffusion paramete…

Expansion of a quantum gas released from an optical lattice

2008

We analyze the interference pattern produced by ultracold atoms released from an optical lattice. Such interference patterns are commonly interpreted as the momentum distributions of the trapped quantum gas. We show that for finite time-of-flights the resulting density distribution can, however, be significantly altered, similar to a near-field diffraction regime in optics. We illustrate our findings with a simple model and realistic quantum Monte Carlo simulations for bosonic atoms, and compare the latter to experiments.

Influence ofsp−dhybridization on the electronic structure of Al-Mn alloys

2008

The influence of $sp\text{\ensuremath{-}}d$ hybridization on the electronic structure of different Al-Mn alloys has been studied by photoelectron spectroscopy. Experimental evidence of a pseudogap in a crystalline binary Hume-Rothery alloy is provided. The pseudogap varies systematically with Mn concentration. The $sp\text{\ensuremath{-}}d$ hybridization alone, even in the absence of Hume-Rothery mechanism, can produce the pseudogap. Existence of the pseudogap, suppression of the $\mathrm{Mn}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}2p$ satellite, and decrease in the Doniach-\ifmmode \check{S}\else \v{S}\fi{}unji\ifmmode \acute{c}\else \'{c}\fi{} asymmetry parameter are the consequences of the $sp\text{\e…

Role of B diffusion in the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction inTa/Co20Fe60B20/MgOnanowires

2015

We report on current-induced domain wall motion in $\mathrm{Ta}/\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{o}}_{20}\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{60}{\mathrm{B}}_{20}/\mathrm{MgO}$ nanowires. Domain walls are observed to move against the electron flow when no magnetic field is applied, while a field along the nanowires strongly affects the domain wall motion velocity. A symmetric effect is observed for up-down and down-up domain walls. This indicates the presence of right-handed domain walls, due to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) with a DMI coefficient $D=+0.06\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mJ}/{\mathrm{m}}^{2}$. The positive DMI coefficient is interpreted to be a consequence of B diffusion into the Ta bu…

Radiation defects and transition ions interaction in magnesium oxide

2007

Abstract The absorption spectra of nickel and manganese doped and pure MgO single crystals were investigated before and after fast neutron irradiation and after annealing. It is shown that the fast neutron irradiation leads to the formation of two types complex center: “Me 2+ –F + (or F) center” and “Me 3+ –V Mg ”. From the behavior of the ∼570 and ∼357 nm absorption bands during annealing the activation energies of the corresponding defects are determined. The obtained activation energy values ( E a

The Deterministic Annealing Filter: A new clustering method for gamma-ray tracking algorithms

2010

A new method of clustering for forward-tracking algorithms has been developed to reconstruct the tracks of gamma-rays in high-resolution detector systems such as AGATA (Advanced GAmma Tracking Array). This technique, called Deterministic Annealing Filter (DAF), comes from statistical physics and is used in high-energy physics. After a description of the DAF method and of the forward-tracking algorithm, the performance of this clustering method is discussed in terms of photopeak efficiency and peak-to-total ratio obtained with GEANT4 simulations for the AGATA geometry. A comparison with the standard so-called "cone clustering method" shows similar performances with a better photopeak efficie…

Quantum annealing with manufactured spins.

2011

Many interesting but practically intractable problems can be reduced to that of finding the ground state of a system of interacting spins. It is believed that the ground state of some naturally occurring spin systems can be effectively attained through a process called quantum annealing. Johnson et al. use quantum annealing to find the ground state of an artificial Ising spin system comprised of an array of eight superconducting flux qubits with programmable spin–spin couplings. With an increased number of spins, the system may provide a practical physical means to implement quantum algorithms, possibly enabling more effective approaches towards solving certain classes of hard combinatorial…

Charge compensation by long-period reconstruction in strongly polar lithium niobate surfaces

2013

The microscopic structure of the polar (000$\overline{1}$) and (0001) surfaces of lithium niobate is investigated by atomic-resolution frequency modulation atomic force microscopy and first-principles calculations. It is found that the surface reconstructs at annealing temperatures sufficiently high to drive off external adsorbates. In particular a ($\sqrt{7}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{7}$)$R$19.1${}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ reconstruction is found for the (000$\overline{1}$) surface. Density-functional theory calculations show that---apart from the $(\sqrt{7}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{7})$---a series of adatom-induced surface reconstructions exist that lower the surfa…

Influence of the Residual Stresses Induced by Shot-Peening on the Oxidation of Zr Plates

2014

The present study evaluates the influence of the residual stress on the oxidation rate of Zr at 650°C. It is shown that the oxidation rate can be substantially decreased by shot-peening. A systematic instigation of the various factors (such as the residual stress, the surface pollution and the chemical composition of the oxidation atmosphere) is realized to separate their influence on the oxidation. The influence of an annealing made after the shot-peening is also considered. One show that the pollution of the surface during the shot-peening process is not responsible for the oxidation rate decrease.

Structure, morphology and crystallization of a random ethylene-propylene copolymer

2003

The structure, morphology, and crystallization behavior of a random ethylene–propylene copolymer, containing 2 wt % ethylene sequences, are analyzed and compared with those of a plain polypropylene sample by means of optical and scanning microscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and calorimetry. For the copolymer, different polymorphs (α, γ and smectic modifications) and morphologies can be obtained through changes in the crystallization and annealing conditions. The analysis of the structural results suggests that the γ phase of isotactic polypropylene can be generated for high molecular mass samples with drastic decreases in the undercooling. The spherulite growth rate (G) data, in conjunc…
