Brief communication: Vehicle routing problem and UAV application in the post-earthquake scenario

Abstract. In this paper we simulate a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle's (UAV) recognition after a possible case of diffuse damage after a seismic event in the town of Acireale (Sicily, Italy). Given a set of sites (84 relevant buildings) and the range of the UAV, we are able to find the number of vehicles to employ and the shortest survey path. The problem of finding the shortest survey path is an operational research problem called Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) whose solution is known to be computationally time-consuming. Zinc Oxide Nanowires on Printed Circuit Boards

Printed circuit boards (PCBs), which are widely used for the fabrication of electronic circuits, can only withstand rather low temperatures. For this reason, the fabrication of high-density, long ZnO nanostructures on PCBs still remains a complex task. In fact, in absence of a seed-layer, whose annealing would require high temperatures, solution-growth methods only allow to synthesize low-density arrays of nanowires. Here we evaluate methods for overcoming this issue and, as a prototype, demonstrate a simple displacement sensor.

We have recently described an automated approach for homology modeling using restrained molecular dynamics and simulated annealing procedures (Li et al, Protein Sci., 6:956-970,1997). We have employed this approach for constructing a homology model of the putative RNA-binding domain of the human RNA-binding protein with multiple splice sites (RBP-MS). The regions of RBP-MS which are homologous to the template protein snRNP U1A were constrained by "homology distance constraints," while the conformation of the non-homologous regions were defined only by a potential energy function. Polyelectrolytes Grafted to Curved Surfaces

We present a scaling theory to describe equilibrium conformations of weakly charged polyelectrolyte molecules grafted at one end onto impermeable surfaces of various morphologies (spheres, cylinders) and of arbitrary curvature. We focus on the case of sufficiently densely grafted chains, i.e., on curved polyelectrolyte brushes. Different regimes of the behavior of curved polyelectrolyte brushes can be distinguished, depending on grafting density, surface curvature, and chain length. We present phase diagrams of the system describing these regimes and discuss the crossover conditions. We also analyze the effect of charge annealing in curved polyelectrolyte brushes.

The structural modifications induced in samples of isotactic poly(propylene) obtained by quenching from the melt at 100°C/s and subsequently annealed at 40, 60 and 80°C for different annealing times have been studied using simultaneous wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering at the synchrotron radiation source of DESY. The occurrance of two different long-period values is demonstrated. These values are related to the mesomorphic phase, existing in the starting quenched material, and to the α-monoclinic one, which settles during the annealing process, respectively.

About complexity of the 2.16-eV absorption band in MgO crystals irradiated with swift Xe ions

Abstract The precise study of the accumulation and subsequent thermal annealing of the defects responsible for the complex absorption band around 2.16 eV, being under discussion in the literature for a long time, has been performed in highly pure MgO single crystals exposed to 0.23-GeV 132Xe ions with a fluence of Φ = 5 × 1011 − 3.3 × 1014 ions/cm2. Three Gaussian components with the maxima at 2.16, 2.02 and 2.40 eV have been considered as a measure of so-called D1, D2 and D3 defects. Similar to the F and F+ centers, the concentration of these defects increases at high fluences without saturation marks, thus confirming their radiation-induced nature (involvement of novel Frenkel defects). Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy of Mo clusters grown on TiO2(110).

Molybdenum was deposited in two steps (3 eq. ML and 1 eq. ML) on the light blue rutile TiO2 10) (1 x 1) surface at room temperature, each Mo deposition cycle being followed by an annealing up to 950-1000 K. This procedure was found to lead to formation of separated clusters having a size in very wide range (1-20 nm). Scanning tunneling microscopy showed a dependence of the cluster morphology as a function of the size. The scanning tunneling spectra of Mo clusters was studied as a function of cluster dimensions and discussed in comparison with photoelectron spectroscopy results previously obtained for homogeneous Mo films. Optical and structural studies of GaN 3D structures selectively grown by MOCVD

Abstract This paper presents preliminary results on the selective growth of three-dimensional (3D) micrometric metallic structures by the MOCVD technique. The 3D structure growth occurs by simply feeding the reactor gas phase with a conventional flow of metal-organic (MO), trimethyl-gallium (TMGa) molecules. Selectivity occurs at the substrate surface in which MO species travel tens of micrometers in order to build up the 3D structure. After the growth, these structures are nitrided in order to give GaN-related optical visible emission. Optical emission results are presented and discussed in this paper.
