Anticancer, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities of low molecular weight bioactive subfractions isolated from cultures of wood degrading fungus …

2017

The aim of this study is to investigate in vitro the anticancer, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities of three low molecular weight subfractions I, II and III isolated from secondary metabolites produced by the wood degrading fungus Cerrena unicolor. The present study demonstrated that the low molecular weight subfractions III exhibited the strongest inhibitory activity towards breast carcinoma cells MDA-MB-231, prostatic carcinoma cells PC3, and breast cancer cells MCF7 with the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 52,25 μg/mL, 60,66 μg/mL, and 54,92 μg/mL, respectively. The highest percentage of inhibition was noted at a concentration of 300 μg/mL in all the examined…

ASYMMETRIC SYNTHESIS OF LINEZOLID THROUGH CATALYZED HENRY REACTION

2013

Linezolid 1 is an antibacterial oxazolidinone approved by FDA in 2000 for the treatment of fastidious bacterial infections.1 The asymmetric synthesis of Linezolid-like molecules make use of the chiral pool approach, through the so-called Manninen reaction.2 This strategy requires the use of BuLi, low temperature and a long elaboration of the acetamide chain. Curiously, the only catalyzed approach toward the asymmetrical synthesis of Linezolid was just recently reported, and belongs to the use of proline-derived catalysts in aldol reactions as the key step.3 This procedure is quite interesting except for the low yield. Here we report a new synthesis of Linezolid, based on a Cu(II)-catalyzed …

Inbreeding does not alter the response to an experimental heat wave in a freshwater snail

2019

Global climate change affects natural populations of many species by increasing the average temperature and the frequency of extreme weather events (e.g. summer heat waves). The ability of organisms to cope with these environmental changes can, however, depend on their genetic properties. For instance, genetic load owing to inbreeding could alter organisms’ responses to climate change-mediated environmental changes but such effects are often overlooked. We investigated the effects of an experimental heat wave (25°C versus 15°C) on life history (reproduction, size) and constitutive immune defence traits (phenoloxidase-like and antibacterial activity of haemolymph) in relation to inbreeding b…

An Updated Review on the Synthesis and Antibacterial Activity of Molecular Hybrids and Conjugates Bearing Imidazole Moiety

2020

The rapid growth of serious infections caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria, especially the nosocomial ESKAPE pathogens, has been acknowledged by Governments and scientists and is one of the world’s major health problems. Various strategies have been and are currently investigated and developed to reduce and/or delay the bacterial resistance. One of these strategies regards the design and development of antimicrobial hybrids and conjugates. This unprecedented critical review, in which our continuing interest in the synthesis and evaluation of the bioactivity of imidazole derivatives is testified, aims to summarise and comment on the results obtained from the end of the 1900s until Februa…

Asymmetric synthesis and biological evaluation of 1,2,4-Oxadiazoles analogues of Linezolid

2014

Oxazolidinones are a class of antibacterial agents which displayed activity againist a variety of gram-positive pathogens and are highly potent against multidrug-resistant bacteria. Linezolid is the first oxazolidinone antibiotic approved for clinical use but linezolid resistance began to appear. 1,2,4 – Oxadiazoles are known bioactive heterocycles whose activity has been often associated to their bioisosterism with amide or ester functionalities [1]. As results of a research project on the molecular design of heterocycle – based antibacterials to contrast Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) [2], we report the synthesis of 1,2,4 - Oxadiazole analogues of Linezolid. The synthesis has been achieved b…

Assessment of the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of different olive processing wastewaters.

2017

Olive processing wastewaters (OPW), namely olive mill wastewater (OMW) and table-olive wastewaters (TOW) were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against five Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria using the standard disc diffusion and thin layer chromatography (TLC)-bioautography assays. Disc diffusion screening and bioautography of OMW were compared to the phenolic extracts of table-olive brines. Positive activity against S. aureus was demonstrated. The optimization of chromatographic separation revealed that hexane/acetone in the ratio of 4:6 was the most effective for phenolic compounds separation. A HPLC-MS analysis was performed showing that only two compounds, hydroxytyr…
