Supplemental Perioperative Oxygen and the Risk of Surgical Wound Infection: A Randomized Controlled Trial
2006
ABSTRACT Three hundred patients were enrolled in a double-blind, randomized, controlled study designed to investigate the ability of supplemental perioperative oxygen to reduce wound infection. Participants were age 18 to 80 years, had no coexisting serious medical conditions, and were scheduled to undergo elective colorectal surgery at one of 14 participating hospitals in Spain. No patients undergoing minor or laparoscopic surgery were included. Anesthesia and antibiotic prophylaxis were standardized for the study. Patients were randomized by computer-generated codes to receive an oxygen/air mixture of 30% or 80% fraction of inspired oxygen (F102) intraoperatively and postoperatively for 6…
Antibiotic prophylaxis in patients who had undergone to prostate biopsy in between the EMA warning era: effects of fluoroquinolones in diabetic and n…
2022
Abstract Purpose To investigate the effects of different antibiotic prophylaxis regimens in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) candidates to trans-rectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (TRUSPB). Methods 143 outpatients with DM who underwent TRUSPB during the period 2018–2020 were selected from a cohort of 1150 patients in 3 different institutions. Exclusion criteria were allergies, concomitant anti-platelet therapies and uncontrolled DM. Different antibiotic prophylaxis regimens were adopted. Bacterial resistance levels to fluoroquinolones into the different communities were also collected. Univariable and multivariable binomial logistic regression analyses were used to assess the odds…
Prevalence survey of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial use at the university hospital "paolo giaccone", palermo, italy
2013
Introduction. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial resistance are well known major public health threats. The first goal of our study was to describe the prevalence of HAI, while the second goal was to describe the antibiotic consumption at our University Hospital, ?P. Giaccone? in Palermo, Italy. Methods. A standardized methodology for a combined Point Prevalence Survey (PPS) on healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial use in European acute care hospital developed by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) was piloted across Europe. The teaching Hospital ?P. Giaccone? in Palermo, Italy, participated in the study Results. Out of 32…
Erratum to: Cetuximab-induced skin exanthema: prophylactic and reactive skin therapy are equally effective
2013
Purpose Treatment with cetuximab is accompanied by the development of an acneiform follicular skin exanthema in more than 80 % of patients. Severe exanthema (grade III/IV) develops in about 9–19 % of patients with the necessity of cetuximab dose reduction or cessation. Methods The study presented was a retrospective analysis of 50 gastrointestinal cancer patients treated with cetuximab in combination with either FOLFIRI or FOLFOX. One cohort of 15 patients received an in-house reactive skin protocol upon development of an exanthema. A second cohort of 15 patients received a skin prophylaxis starting with the first dose of cetuximab before clinical signs of toxicity. A third historic group o…
EAU Guidelines on Vesicoureteral Reflux in Children
2012
Context: Primary vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is a common congenital urinary tract abnormality in children. There is considerable controversy regarding its management. Preservation of kidney function is the main goal of treatment, which necessitates identification of patients requiring early intervention. Objective: To present a management approach for VUR based on early risk assessment.Evidence acquisition: A literature search was performed and the data reviewed. From selected papers, data were extracted and analyzed with a focus on risk stratification. The authors recognize that there are limited high-level data on which to base unequivocal recommendations, necessitating a revisiting of thi…
Postoperative endophthalmitis incidence after intravitreal therapy: a comparison of two different preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis.
2016
Prevention of postoperative endophthalmitis (POE) is a goal of every ophthalmic procedure and also in intravitreal therapy (IVT). This comparative retrospective study targets whether systemic and topical preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) regimen does prevent POE after IVT in a higher rate compared with topical PAP alone. Out of 6111 IVT performed over a period of 103.5 months, in the study group A patients were treated with systemic and topical PAP (2881 IVT), and in the study group B patients were treated only with topical PAP (3230 IVT). Intravitreal drugs were anti-VEGF, triamcinolone and dexamethasone implants. The incidence of POE in group A (1/2881 or 0.035 % per injection) wa…
The role of antibiotic prophylaxis in reducing bacterial contamination of autologous bone graft collected from implant site
2017
The aim of this study was to evaluate if antibiotic prophylaxis reduces the bacterial contamination of bone particles collected directly from the burs used for implant site preparation. Thirty-four patients underwent the surgical procedures for a total of 34 implant sites. One 1 gr. tablet of amoxicillin + clavulanic acid was given to the test group 12 hours and 1 hour before the surgery. The control group did not take antibiotic prophylaxis. Bone particles were collected and centrifuged. The suspensions were subjected to serial dilutions and each dilution was examined twice using a spatulation technique in Trypticase Soy Agar (TSA), in Sabouraud Dextrose Agar, and in Mitis Salivarius Agar …
The Pharmacokinetics of Metronidazole and Gentamicin in a Single Preoperative Dose as Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Colorectal Surgery
2008
Objective: To describe, in patients undergoing colorectal surgery (CRS), the pharmacokinetics of a single, prophylactic preoperative dose of 1500 mg of metronidazole plus 240 mg gentamicin and measure its efficacy in accordance with the accepted pharmacodynamic and microbiological parameters. Method: Thirty-six patients undergoing CRS agreed to participate in the study. Three blood samples were taken from each. Cmax 15 minutes after finishing the infusion of the mixture, CfinIQ on finishing the surgery, and Cmin between 12 and 24 hours post-administration. The concentrations of metronidazole and gentamicin in each simple were measured and the pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated (dV-di…
Analyzing the risk factors influencing surgical site infections: the site of environmental factors.
2017
Addressing surgical site infection (SSI) is accomplished, in part, through studies that attempt to clarify the nature of many essential factors in the control of SSI. We sought to examine the link between multiple risk factors, including environmental factors, and SSI for prevention management. We conducted a longitudinal prospective study to identify SSIs in all patients who underwent interventions in 2014 in 8 selected hospitals on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Risk factors related to the operating theatre included level of fungi and bacterial contamination, temperature and humidity, air renewal and differential air pressure. Patient-related variables included age, sex, comorbidity, nu…

2015
Objectives: To study clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the patients treated at the clinic “Integrated Dentistry for Patients with Special Needs (Special Care Dentistry)” at Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), as well as to know the dental treatments performed in these patients and the modifications from the usual treatment protocol. The information obtained from the results could also be applied in order to assess the needs of dental students education about this type of patients. Study Design: Medical records review of all the patients referred to the clinic of “Integrated Dentistry for Patients with Special Needs”, performing a retrospective cross-sectional study analyzi…
