Natural hybrids fromSaccharomyces cerevisiae,Saccharomyces bayanusandSaccharomyces kudriavzeviiin wine fermentations
2006
Several wine isolates of Saccharomyces were analysed for six molecular markers, five nuclear and one mitochondrial, and new natural interspecific hybrids were identified. The molecular characterization of these Saccharomyces hybrids was performed based on the restriction analysis of five nuclear genes ( CAT8 , CYR1 , GSY1 , MET6 and OPY1 , located in different chromosomes), the ribosomal region encompassing the 5.8S rRNA gene and the two internal transcribed spacers, and sequence analysis of the mitochondrial gene COX2 . This method allowed us to identify and characterize new hybrids between Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces kudriavzevii , between S. cerevisiae and Saccharomyces ba…
Bactrocera oleae. Fattori naturali di controllo
2019
Bactrocera oleae. Natural control factors. Natural control factors (parasitoids and climatic factors) influencing the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae, are analysed comparing two different areas of cultivated and wild olives, Sicily and the Western Cape of South Africa. Bactrocera oleae has a similar level of parasitization in both areas, much higher in wild olives than in cultivated ones. Climatic conditions are much more important than climatic factors, influencing the growth of olive fruit fly populations, producing a higher level of infestation in more humid and rainy productive seasons.
Thrombin generation - a potentially useful biomarker of thrombotic risk in Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms.
2017
The diagnosis of essential thrombocythemia and polycythemia vera is often made during a thrombotic event which can be serious. Philadelphia-negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasia patients have an increased thrombotic risk. This is assessed using various scoring systems but these are far from ideal and individual risk. The currend trend to personalised medicine requires finding the most useful thrombotic risk biomarker in these patients. Routine tests for coagulation do not take account of both pro- and anti-coagulant factors which is why these tests are not useful in patients with Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms. Thrombin generation reflects more accurately the bal…
Human papillomaviruses in oral carcinoma and oral potentially malignant disorders: a systematic review
2011
Oral Diseases (2011) 17 (Suppl. 1), 58–72 Objectives: Human papillomavirus (HPV) in oral carcinoma (OSCC) and potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) is controversial. The primary aim was to calculate pooled risk estimates for the association of HPV with OSCC and OPMD when compared with healthy oral mucosa as controls. We also examined the effects of sampling techniques on HPV detection rates. Methods: Systematic review was performed using PubMed (January 1966–September 2010) and EMBASE (January 1990–September 2010). Eligible studies included randomized controlled, cohort and cross-sectional studies. Pooled data were analysed by calculating odds ratios, using a random effects model. Risk o…
Prevalence of HPV infection in racial-ethnic subgroups of head and neck cancer patients
2017
Abstract The landscape of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in racial/ethnic subgroups of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients has not been evaluated carefully. In this study, a meta-analysis examined the prevalence of HPV in HNC patients of African ancestry. Additionally, a pooled analysis of subject-level data was also performed to investigate HPV prevalence and patterns of p16 (CDNK2A) expression amongst different racial groups. Eighteen publications (N = 798 Black HNC patients) were examined in the meta-analysis, and the pooled analysis included 29 datasets comprised of 3129 HNC patients of diverse racial/ethnic background. The meta-analysis revealed that the prevalence of HPV16 was h…
New body metrics to determine asteroid size and weight directly in the field
2015
Asteroids are an important group of predators in many marine ecosystems. The measure of body size is crucial in studying asteroid biology as this variable affects both prey selection and predation impact. Current field techniques for estimating asteroid size (i.e. total length TL, total weight TW) include the measure of correlated variables, such us the central disk (CD) and arm length (AL). However, these variables are often time-consuming and require a direct handling of the organism. We tested the accuracy of new asteroid body metrics, the arm height (AH) or arm width (AW), to rapidly estimate body size in asteroids. AH and AW were measured in three of the most common Mediterranean aster…
Absorption Properties of Metal–Semiconductor Hybrid Nanoparticles
2011
The optical response of hybrid metal-semiconductor nanoparticles exhibits different behaviors due to the proximity between the disparate materials. For some hybrid systems, such as CdS-Au matchstick-shaped hybrids, the particles essentially retain the optical properties of their original components, with minor changes. Other systems, such as CdSe-Au dumbbell-shaped nanoparticles, exhibit significant change in the optical properties due to strong coupling between the two materials. Here, we study the absorption of these hybrids by comparing experimental results with simulations using the discrete dipole approximation method (DDA) employing dielectric functions of the bare components as input…
Angiogenesis of oral lichen planus: a possible pathogenetic mechanism.
2008
Objective: Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease with an autoimmune inflammatory pathogenesis. The aim of the research is to compare the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and adhesion of molecules in the biopsy samples of patients affected by OLP, in order to research the presence of the angiogenetic phenomenon and to understand its pathogenetic mechanism. Materials and Methods: Thirty OLP patients and thirty healthy subjects were enrolled in a study. The immunohistochemical analysis of the VEGF and vascularendothelial adhesion molecules was carried out by means of primary antibodies and anti-CD34, anti-VEGF, antiCD106 antigen (VCAM-1) and anti-CD54 antigen (ICA…
