Sangre de nobles, mártires y pecadores. Los caballeros de San Juan entre la reforma religiosa y la vida militar

2018

After the fall of Rhodes in 1522, the Order of St. John needed to recover new headquarters (which were finally established in Malta in 1530) and its reputation as militia Christi. This Religion in arms had now to redraft its chivalrous ideals within the new context of the Reformation and the Catholic Renewal. However, Hospitallers met this challenge partially and late, although they represented themselves as belonging to this glorious Religion. Such a dialectic between practice and theory is proved, for example, by an apologetic book published in 1619 in Italy and Spain, as well as by unpublished instructions in the late seventeenth century directed at the chaplains providing religious supp…

Potential role of the natural multi-targeted agent curcumin in the treatment of oral diseases.

2009

We critically review the current data on the therapeutic effects and basic biological activities of the natural compound curcumin on various oral diseases: a sound experimental evidence appears to support its possible use against relevant pathologies which include cancer, radiotherapy- and chemotherapy-induced mucositis, lichen planus and periodontitis. This versatility of curcumin depends on its ability of interacting with multiple targets, though inhibition of the transcription factor NF-kB can be identified as one of the principal mechanisms. The therapeutic potentialities of curcumin in oral medicine have, however, to be further verified, in particular by more human ad hoc in vivo studi…

Prevalence of vulval lichen planus in a cohort of women with oral lichen planus:an interdisciplinary study

2006

BACKGROUND: Lichen planus (LP) is a mucocutaneous inflammatory dermatosis that frequently involves the oral and genital mucosae. Patients with LP affecting these sites are often seen by oral medicine specialists or gynaecologists who work in isolation and depend heavily on histopathologists to help them in confirming the diagnosis. There are few studies in the literature combining the experiences of these specialists who share the care of patients with both oral and genital LP. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of vulval LP (VLP) in a cohort of patients with histologically confirmed oral LP (OLP). METHODS: The study group consisted of 42 women histologically diagnosed with OLP. The mea…

Increased frequencies of CD11b+CD33+CD14+HLA-DRlowmyeloid-derived suppressor cells are an early event in melanoma patients

2014

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are a heterogeneous cell population characterized by immunosuppressive activity. Elevated levels of MDSC in peripheral blood are found in inflammatory diseases as well as in malignant tumors where they are supposed to be major contributors to mechanisms of tumor-associated tolerance. We investigated the frequency and function of MDSC in peripheral blood of melanoma patients and observed an accumulation of CD11b(+) CD33(+) CD14(+) HLA-DR(low) MDSC in all stages of disease (I-IV), including early stage I patients. Disease progression and enhanced tumor burden did not result in a further increase in frequencies or change in phenotype of MDSC. By investig…

Psoriatic arthritis and COVID ‐19 pandemic: Consequences in medical treatment?

2020

The COVID‐19 pandemic has a strong negative impact on human society world‐wide. Patients with immune‐mediated disease may be prone to an increased risk of infection and/ or more severe course. We review the available data for patients with psoriatic arthritis (PSA) and systemic treatments. Current treatment options are summarized. Based upon the experience with COVID‐19 the following problems are addressed: (a) Can systemic treatment reduce comorbidities of PsA that are also comorbidities for COVID‐19? Does systemic medical treatment pose an increased risk of infection with SARS‐CoV‐2? Does systemic drug therapy have an impact on the risk of pulmonary fibrosis ‐ a factor with strong negativ…

Data from: Population structure and reticulate evolution of Saccharomyces eubayanus and its lager-brewing hybrids

2014

Reticulate evolution can be a major driver of diversification into new niches, especially in disturbed habitats and at the edges of ranges. Industrial fermentation strains of yeast provide a window into these processes, but progress has been hampered by a limited understanding of the natural diversity and distribution of Saccharomyces species and populations. For example, lager beer is brewed with Saccharomyces pastorianus, an alloploid hybrid of S. cerevisiae and S. eubayanus, a species only recently discovered in Patagonia, Argentina. Here we report that genetically diverse strains of S. eubayanus are readily isolated from Patagonia, demonstrating that the species is well established ther…

Comprehensive estimation of input signals and dynamics in biochemical reaction networks

2012

Abstract Motivation: Cellular information processing can be described mathematically using differential equations. Often, external stimulation of cells by compounds such as drugs or hormones leading to activation has to be considered. Mathematically, the stimulus is represented by a time-dependent input function. Parameters such as rate constants of the molecular interactions are often unknown and need to be estimated from experimental data, e.g. by maximum likelihood estimation. For this purpose, the input function has to be defined for all times of the integration interval. This is usually achieved by approximating the input by interpolation or smoothing of the measured data. This procedu…

Density and biomass of smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) in five Finnish lakes

2005

Abstract Hydro-acoustic stock assessment and exploratory sampling with small mesh-sized trawls and seines have sometimes suggested that the importance of smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) in pelagic fish communities might be greater than sampling from commercial fishery and gillnetting indicate. We studied the proportion of smelt in the total fish density (fish ha−1) and biomass (kg ha−1) of pelagic fish with echo sounding and trawling in five southern boreal lakes. Fish density varied between 460 and 2000 fish ha−1 in the study lakes. Smelt and vendace (Coregonus albula) accounted for more than 95% of the exploratory trawl-catches. The total fish biomass in the study areas varied between 3 and 13 …
