Alarm calling by individual willow tits, Parus montanus

1990

Abstract Alarm responses of wild-captured individual willow tits to model sparrowhawks, Accipiter nisus, flying over a test chamber were studied. Tits did not usually give alarm calls if the apparent predator was passing nearby (at a height of 10 m), while over half of the individuals responded by alarm calling for a more distant predator (40 m). This suggests that alarm calling involves a risk to the caller. Second, there was individual variation in the responses, with older males giving the call more frequently than females or young males. The greater responsiveness of adult males may indicate that different individuals in a flock gain different benefits by warning the others. The tendenc…

Food Caching By Willow and Crested Tits: A Test of Scatterhoarding Models

1995

In coniferous forests of Central Finland, Willow (Parus montanus) and Crest- ed Tits (P. cristatus) store seeds in a scattered distribution within their territory during the autumn. Individuals cache and recover food items while moving together as members of mixed-species flocks. The purpose of this study was to test certain predictions of scatter- hoarding models (Stapanian and Smith 1978, Clarkson et al. 1986), which predict how the animal should hoard food items from a superabundant source to maximize the number of caches recovered. Our field experiments gave support to most of the predictions of the models. Individual tits stored seeds closer to the food source when food had been availa…

Isolating Wine Yeasts that are Specific to the Apold Region and Identifying them through RFLP Genetic Methods

2015

The present study aims at isolating, identifying and selecting autochthonous wine yeast strains with a view to establish a crop bank specific to the Apold area. 569 wine yeast strains were isolated during the alcoholic fermentation of must from the Apold area, 458 were identified through cultural methods and with the help of the API 20 C AUX test (Biomeriux, France). Six yeast strains (A87, A169, A296, A314, A132 and A413) were genetically identified through the PCR-ITS RFLP method of the 5.8S-ITS segment; the resulting four strains were Saccharomyces cerevisiae - A87, A169, A296, A314 - and two Saccharomyces bayanus strains - A132 și A413. The strains we identified constitute a base for t…

Data from: Inter-annual variation and long-term trends in proportions of resident individuals in partially migratory birds

2016

Partial migration – a part of a population migrates and another part stays resident year-round on the breeding site – is probably the most common type of migration in the animal kingdom, yet it has only lately garnered more attention. Theoretical studies indicate that in partially migratory populations, the proportion of resident individuals (PoR) should increase in high latitudes in response to the warming climate, but empirical evidence exists for few species. We provide the first comprehensive overview of the environmental factors affecting PoR and the long-term trends in PoR by studying 27 common partially migratory bird species in Finland. The annual PoR values were calculated by divid…

Controlled production of patchy particles from the combined effects of nanoprecipitation and vitrification

2017

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study a simple and scalable method for fabricating patchy nanoparticles via the assembly of binary polymer blends under a rapid solvent exchange. Patchiness can be achieved by incorporating a glassy component, which kinetically traps the particle morphology along the path to the equilibrium configuration. Our simulations reveal that the number of surface patches increases for larger nanoparticles and for more asymmetric blend ratios, while the size distribution of the patches remains rather uniform. Other than multi-patch nanoparticles, Janus structures have been obtained for small nanoparticles. Further, ribbon structures with elongated surface doma…

Środowiska polskiej emigracji politycznej wobec odbudowy Zamku Królewskiego w Warszawie

2017

20 stycznia 1971 r. I sekretarz KC PZPR Edward Gierek podczas spotkania z przedstawicielami środowisk twórczych zapowiedział odbudowę Zamku Królewskiego w Warszawie. W Polsce decyzja o odbudowie przyjęta została z entuzjazmem i wyzwoliła wielką ofiarność społeczną.

Co-GLAD sputtering of tungsten-based nanostructured metallic thin films

2022

A structural and electrical study of tungsten-based metal thin films prepared by co-sputtering GLAD is the subject of this thesis. For this purpose, three different systems (W-W, W-Ag and W-Mo) have been developed using two opposite metallic targets (tilt angle α = 80° with the substrate). In addition to the choice of the second metallic element, different parameters involved in the growth of these films have undergone a variation (working pressure, thickness and second target current) to understand their influence on structural and electrical behaviors of these films. All three systems present a columnar and porous structure. The morphology of these films (especially the inclination of the…

Conséquences écologiques et évolutives du flux de gènes entre Brassica napus transgénique et ses apparentés sauvages

2010

In the framework of commercial release for transgenic crops with novel traits, consequences of gene flow and introgression are still one main concern. I explored the ecological and evolutionary consequences of gene flow between oilseed rape (Brassica napus) and its wild relatives, brown mustard (B. juncea) and wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum), through several experiments carried out in greenhouse, common garden and field in Beijing and Dijon. First, I revised a comprehensive review of the literature about gene flow and its effect on plant fitness in the Brassiceae. Second, I investigated the effects on gene flow of seed size of hybrids between Bt-transgenic oilseed rape and mustard. Smal…
