The influence of major histocompatibility complex class II genes and T-cell Vbeta repertoire on response to immunization with HBsAg.

1998

Nonresponsiveness to HBsAg vaccination is observed in 5-10% of vaccine recipients and is possibly caused by a defect in the T helper cell compartment. The immune response to HBsAg is influenced by genes of the major histocompatibility complex. We have investigated MHC class I and class II antigens in 53 adult responders and 73 nonresponders. Results obtained in this first study were tested in a second study with 56 responders and 62 nonresponders from an infant vaccination trial. In addition, the peripheral Vbeta-chain T-cell receptor repertoire was investigated using monoclonal antibodies and flow-cytometry in 26 adult responders and 38 nonresponders. As previously reported, nonresponsiven…

Second study on the recurrence risk of isolated esophageal atresia with or without trachea-esophageal fistula among first-degree relatives: no eviden…

2013

BACKGROUND Esophageal atresia with/without trachea-esophageal fistula (EA/TEF) denotes a spectrum of severe congenital malformations. The aim of this systematic study was to determine both the recurrence risk for EA/TEF, and the risk for malformations of the VATER/VACTERL association spectrum, in first-degree relatives of patients with isolated EA/TEF. METHODS A total of 108 unrelated patients with isolated EA/TEF were included. These individuals had 410 first-degree relatives including 194 siblings. The presence of EA/TEF and malformations of the VATER/VACTERL association spectrum in relatives was systematically assessed. Data from the EUROCAT network were used for comparison. RESULTS None…

Correlation of " in vivo" microcirculation and degeneration of the basal cells of the epithelium in lingual lichen planus

2010

Background: Oral lichen planus is an inflammatory chronic disease with an autimmune pathogenesis and unknown etiology that affects oral mucosa, with or without the involvement of the skin and other mucous membranes. The principal histological characteristics are the degeneration of the basal cell layer and the abnormal infiltration of inflammatory cells into the subepithelial layer of connective tissue. Objectives: This study is aimed to appraise if lingual lichen planus (LLP) is sustained by alteration of the oral microcirculation and if this abnormal vascularisation increases the degeneration of basal keratinocytes and the disruption of the basement membrane. Materials and Methods: Fiftee…

Sequence variation in mature microRNA-608 and benefit from neo-adjuvant treatment in locally advanced rectal cancer patients

2016

Summary Analysis of a polymorphism in mature microRNA-608 (rs4919510) in rectal cancer patients enrolled in a randomized phase II clinical trial identified patient subpopulations who might benefit from the use of an intensified neo-adjuvant treatment strategy with Cetuximab.

Integration of a radiation biomarker into modeling of thyroid carcinogenesis and post-Chernobyl risk assessment

2016

Strong evidence for the statistical association between radiation exposure and disease has been produced for thyroid cancer by epidemiological studies after the Chernobyl accident. However, limitations of the epidemiological approach in order to explore health risks especially at low doses of radiation appear obvious. Statistical fluctuations due to small case numbers dominate the uncertainty of risk estimates. Molecular radiation markers have been searched extensively to separate radiation-induced cancer cases from sporadic cases. The overexpression of the CLIP2 gene is the most promising of these markers. It was found in the majority of papillary thyroid cancers (PTCs) from young patients…

Prospective, blinded comparison of cytology and DNA-image cytometry of brush biopsies for early detection of oral malignancy

2012

summary Objectives: Adjunctive techniques like DNA image cytometry (DNA-ICM) have been attributed to enhance the diagnostic performance of oral brush biopsies. The aim of the study was an evaluation of brush biopsies, analysed according to morphological criteria and by DNA-ICM vs. histological findings in a blinded prospective trial. Materials and methods: Eighty eight brush biopsies of 70 patients were sampled. Only clinical suspicious but not evident malignant oral lesions were included. Clinical diagnosis was leukoplakia (n = 36), lichen planus (n = 18), verruciform erythroplakia (n = 12), erythroleukoplakia (n = 9), erosion (n = 7) and induration (n = 6). Evaluation was conducted via hi…

Efficacy of mometasone furoate microemulsion in the treatment of erosive-ulcerative oral lichen planus: pilot study

2004

Background:  Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a frequent immunological chronic disease, having different clinical forms: asymptomatic and symptomatic. Symptomatic OLP has been palliated with topical corticosteroids with different levels of efficacy and safety. The purpose of this pilot phase II clinical trial was to determine the efficacy of mometasone furoate microemulsion upon the symptoms and signs of erosive-ulcerative OLP. Methods:  Forty-nine patients with clinical and histologically confirmed erosive-ulcerative OLP were enrolled in this study (36 women and 13 men). Their average age was 56.4 years (from 28 to 78). The treatment consisted of 0.1% mometasone furoate microemulsion mouthwash …

WHO-defined ‘myelodysplastic syndrome with isolated del(5q)’ in 88 consecutive patients: survival data, leukemic transformation rates and prevalence …

2010

The 2008 World Health Organization (WHO) criteria were used to identify 88 consecutive Mayo Clinic patients with 'myelodysplastic syndrome with isolated del(5q)' (median age 74 years; 60 females). In all, 60 (68%) patients were followed up to the time of their death. Overall median survival was 66 months; leukemic transformation was documented in five (5.7%) cases. Multivariable analysis identified age >or=70 years (P=0.01), transfusion need at diagnosis (P=0.04) and dysgranulopoiesis (P=0.02) as independent predictors of shortened survival; the presence of zero (low risk), one (intermediate risk) or >or=2 (high risk) risk factors corresponded to median survivals of 102, 52 and 27 months, r…

Effect of desquamative gingivitis on periodontal status: a pilot study

2009

OBJECTIVE: Desquamative gingivitis (DG) represents the gingival manifestation associated with several mucocutaneous disorders and systemic conditions. Little is known of whether or not DG could influence the onset or progression of plaque-related periodontitis. In this study, the potential impact of DG on plaque-related attachment loss and pocket formation has been evaluated. METHODS: A cross-sectional evaluation of 12 patients with DG [eight oral lichen planus (OLP), four mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP)], never treated for DG lesions or plaque-related periodontitis, was carried out. Probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), fullmouth plaque (FMPS), and bleeding (FMBS) scores wer…

Lack of evidence of hepatitis in patients with oral lichen planus in China: A case control study

2016

Background: China has been one of the countries with high prevalence of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) liver disease. And lichen planus is an extrahepatic manifestation of patients with chronic HCV infection. This case-control study was conducted to investigate the relationship between oral lichen planus (OLP) and HBV/HCV infection in China. Material and Methods: A total of 776 patients, including 150 patients with OLP (Group OLP), 429 inpatients from the Trauma Ward of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department (Group A), 110 patients with other oral mucosal diseases, but without a reported association with HCV infection (Group B) and 87 patients with oral liche…
