Chronic kidney disease in European patients with obstructive sleep apnea: the ESADA cohort study

2016

Abstract: The cross-sectional relationship of obstructive sleep apnea with moderate to severe chronic kidney disease, defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate = 30) was found in 34% of subjects. The lowest nocturnal oxygen saturation was 81 +/- 10.2%. Chronic kidney disease prevalence in the whole sample was 8.7% or 6.1%, according to the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease or the Chronic Kidney Disease-Epidemiology Collaboration equations, respectively. Subjects with lower estimated glomerular filtration rate were older, more obese, more often female, had worse obstructive sleep apnea and more co-morbidities (P < 0.001, each). With both equations, independent predictors of esti…

Effects of exercise and diet interventions on obesity-related sleep disorders in men: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

2013

Abstract Background Sleep is essential for normal and healthy living. Lack of good quality sleep affects physical, mental and emotional functions. Currently, the treatments of obesity-related sleep disorders focus more on suppressing sleep-related symptoms pharmaceutically and are often accompanied by side effects. Thus, there is urgent need for alternative ways to combat chronic sleep disorders. This study will investigate underlying mechanisms of the effects of exercise and diet intervention on obesity-related sleep disorders, the role of gut microbiota in relation to poor quality of sleep and day-time sleepiness, as well as the levels of hormones responsible for sleep-wake cycle regulati…

Surgical planning after sleep versus awake techniques in patients with obstructive sleep apnea

2013

Objective/Hypothesis This study examined correlations between surgical recommendations based on either drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) or common awake examination methods in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Study Design Prospective, blinded, clinical trial at a university hospital. Methods An otorhinolaryngologist designed surgical plans for patients with OSAS after clinical examination, lateral cephalometry, the Muller maneuver, and Friedman staging. A second otorhinolaryngologist blinded to the previous plans made surgical recommendations after DISE. A third person tested agreement between the two sets of plans using Cohen's kappa statistic and the chi-squared te…

Early and mid-term effects of obstructive apneas in myocardial injury and inflammation.

2011

Abstract Background Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with cardiovascular disorders, but the different comorbidities in OSA patients make it difficult to know their specific effects on the development of cardiovascular injury. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether recurrent obstructive apneas could lead to myocardial injury. Methods Thirty-six male Sprague–Dawley rats (300–350 g) were either acutely (3 h) or sustainably (5 h/day, for 10 days) subjected to obstructive apneas with a pattern of 15 s each, 60 apneas/h. Corresponding control groups were formed for the acute and sustained models. To assess the induction of systemic inflammation, IL1-β was measured in p…

Rapid maxillary expansion and obstructive sleep apnea: a review and meta-analysis

2016

Background: OSAS during childhood leads to significant physical and neuropsychomotor impairment. Thus, it needs to be recognized and treated early in order to avoid or attenuate the chronic problems associated with OSAS, which are deleterious to a child’s development. Adenotonsillectomy and, in select cases, continuous positive airwaypressure (CPAP) have been the preferred treatments for OSAS in children, and yet they are ineffective at fully ameliorating the disease. Minimally invasive treatments have recently been proposed, comprising intra-oral and extra-oral devices as well as speech therapy. Objetive: to conduct a meta-analysis on studies from around the world that used rapid maxillary…

Influence of age and gender on reference values for common pediatric sleep questionnaires: Results from a community-based study.

2017

Abstract Objectives Sleep problems are often assessed using questionnaires, but it is unclear whether the responses given are influenced by age and gender. We addressed this question in several widely used pediatric sleep questionnaires and provide age-dependent percentile curves. Methods Data of a community-based study in schoolchildren were reanalyzed (N = 163, 50% males, age 6–17 years). Children and their parents completed the Sleep-Related Breathing Disorder Scale (SRBDS) of the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire, the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), the Sleep Self Report (SSR) of the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire in a long and short version, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale…

Identification of bronchiolitis profiles in Italian children through the application of latent class analysis

2020

AbstractBackgroundBronchiolitis is the primary infection of the lower respiratory tract in children under 2 years of age. Although it is generally considered a single nosological entity, recent studies suggested remarkable clinical heterogeneity. To date, no studies have identified classes of children with bronchiolitis within the Italian population. This study aimed to identify discrete profiles of Italian children hospitalized with bronchiolitis using a clustering approach and to compare findings with those obtained in international cohorts.MethodsThis was a retrospective single-centre study conducted on children aged ≤2 years hospitalised with bronchiolitis (n = 401) at the Department of…

Predicting poor school performance in children suspected for sleep-disordered breathing

2015

Habitually snoring children are at a greater risk of poor school performance (PSP). We investigated the ability of conventional sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) measures for predicting PSP in habitually snoring children. The dataset of Hannover Study on Sleep Apnea in Childhood (HASSAC), a large community-based study in primary school children, was retrospectively analyzed. All habitual snorers were included. Based on their grades, children were grouped into good and poor school performers. SDB measures obtained by a parental questionnaire, a home pulse oximetry, and a home polysomnography were evaluated for their accuracy in predicting poor school performance by calculating receiver operati…

Assessment of the awareness and management of sleep apnea syndrome in acromegaly. The COM.E.TA (Comorbidities Evaluation and Treatment in Acromegaly)…

2011

In 2007 the Italian COM.E.T.A. (COMorbidities Evaluation and Treatment in Acromegaly) study group started to assess the application in a clinical setting of the Versailles criteria for management of acromegaly complications by a first questionnaire focusing on cardiovascular co-morbidities. A further questionnaire on sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) was delivered by the COM.E.T.A. study group to 107 endocrine centers in Italy. The results of our survey suggest that SAS is a well-known comorbidity even if its estimated prevalence is lower than in the literature. Polysomnography is the preferred tool for diagnosis. Control of SAS is considered relevant both for quality of life and co-morbidities. C…

The prevalence and predictors of obstructive sleep apnea in major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia: A systematic review and me…

2016

Background Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a health hazard since it is associated with neurocognitive dysfunction and cardio-metabolic diseases. The prevalence of OSA among people with serious mental illness (SMI) is unclear. Method We searched major electronic databases from inception till 06/2015. Articles were included that reported the prevalence of OSA determined by polysomnography (PSG) or an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) >5 events/hr, in people with major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD) or schizophrenia. A random effects meta-analysis calculating the pooled prevalence of OSA and meta-regression of potential moderators were performed. Results Twelve articles were inc…
