Effect of the non-linearity of demagnetization curves on the torque of hybrid stepping motors with permanent magnets in slots

1998

The recent achievements in electronic control as well as the higher performance of advanced permanent magnets have brought about a change in the general strategy for design and development of new types of small electrical machines. A special application of permanent magnets (PM) is represented by hybrid stepping motors (HSM). The latter are a sort of combination of variable reluctance‐motors and permanent magnet‐motors. The influence of various PM inserts into the magnetic circuits of electromechanical converters on field and force distribution has been already investigated by the authors (1996). Promising results for HSM have been reported, especially when rare‐earth PMs are used. The main…

Vibration signature analysis for monitoring rotor broken bar in double squirrel cage induction motors based on wavelet analysis

2014

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a diagnosis technique, for rotor broken bar in double cage induction motor, based on advanced use of wavelet transform analysis. The proposed technique is experimentally validated. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed approach is based on a combined use of frequency sliding and wavelet transform analysis, to isolate the contribution of the rotor fault components issued from vibration signals in a single frequency band. Findings – The proposed technique is reliable for tracking the rotor fault components over time-frequency domain. The quantitative analysis results based on this technique are the proof of its robustness. Research limit…

An Investigation of the Cutting Process for Chip Breaking Monitoring in Turning of Steels

1998

This paper presents some results of an experimental study on chip breaking monitoring when turning steels with chip forming inserts. In the first part of this study the recognition of chip forms by means of cutting force analysis in the frequency domain is described. Generally, the present work is concerned with the use of the interface control factor for determining the transition from unacceptable chip forms to the chip breaking. For this purpose experiments under approximately orthogonal machining conditions including measuring the shear strain, the cutting energy and the average interface temperature are carried out. The obtained results confirmed that the initiation of acceptable chip …

Numerical studies of the melting process in the induction furnace with cold crucible

2008

PurposeAims to present recent activities in numerical modeling of cold crucible melting process.Design/methodology/approach3D numerical analysis was used for electromagnetic problem and 3D large eddy simulation (LES) method was applied for fluid flow modeling.FindingsThe comparative modeling shows, that higher H/D ratio of the melt is more efficient when total power consumption is considered, but this advantage is held back by higher heat losses through the crucible walls. Also, calculations reveal that lower frequencies, which are energetically less effective, provide better mixing of the melt.Originality/value3D electromagnetic model, which allows to take into account non‐symmetrical dist…

A new methodology for distribution systems faults identification, location and characterization

2005

PurposeIdentify a new methodology for fault characterization, identification and location in electrical distribution systems, based on the use of matrix algebra.Design/methodology/approachThe developed diagnostic methodology is based on a high precision analytical model of the network using a distributed parameters representation.FindingsTest results have proved the approach to be efficient and precise, while providing a generalized quadripolar model of a line affected by the most common kinds of fault.Research limitations/implicationsGeneralization to a greater number of fault cases, experimental tests.Practical implicationsUtilities are quite interested in such items, since the new requir…

Land cover classification of VHR airborne images for citrus grove identification

2011

Abstract Managing land resources using remote sensing techniques is becoming a common practice. However, data analysis procedures should satisfy the high accuracy levels demanded by users (public or private companies and governments) in order to be extensively used. This paper presents a multi-stage classification scheme to update the citrus Geographical Information System (GIS) of the Comunidad Valenciana region (Spain). Spain is the first citrus fruit producer in Europe and the fourth in the world. In particular, citrus fruits represent 67% of the agricultural production in this region, with a total production of 4.24 million tons (campaign 2006–2007). The citrus GIS inventory, created in…

A Simple Method for Evaluating Ground-Fault Current Transfer at the Transition Station of a Combined Overhead-Cable Line

2008

When a substation is fed by a combined overhead-cable transmission line, a significant part of the ground fault current flows through cable sheaths and is discharged into the soil at the transition station where cables are connected to the overhead line. Such a phenomenon, known as ldquofault application transfer, rdquo may result in high ground potentials at the transition station which may cause shocks and equipment damage. The scope of this paper is to present new analytic formulas which can be used for the direct calculation of the fault current transferred at the transition station and its ground potential rise as well as the substation earth current. The proposed formulas allow evaluat…

Leakage-detection in blade pitch control systems for wind turbines

2012

The main contribution of the work is a systematic study evaluating the performance of different filters for leakage detection in pitch control systems. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is examined in a Matlab/Simulink real-time environment. The test bed consists of the following elements: hydraulic power unit, servo valve, two leakage bypasses, hydraulic cylinder, payload and xPC-based control system. The filters are tested with the state-augmentation and the hypothesis testing approaches. To our knowledge, the comparison of these different approaches has not been done previously for this type of application. The paper concludes on the accuracy and sensitivity of the leakage detect…

Innovative sheet metal forming processes: numerical simulations and experimental tests

2004

Abstract In this paper, computer aided engineering of some innovative sheet metal forming processes is reviewed. In particular, tube hydroforming processes and spinning processes are examined. Advanced numerical tools are utilized with the aim to design proper forming operations able to produce sound components. Furthermore, as far as the spinning process is concerned, experimental verifications are carried out to confirm the effectiveness of the numerical predictions.

INTERNAL PRESSURE AND COUNTERPUNCH ACTION DESIGN IN Y-SHAPED TUBE HYDROFORMING PROCESSES: A MULTI OBJECTIVE OPTIMISATION APPROACH

2009

In sheet metal forming most of the problems are multi-objective problems, generally characterised by conflicting objectives. A classical approach to investigate such kind of problems is focused on a combination of multiple objectives into a unique objective function to be optimised. Actually, in metal forming processes optimisation two main phases have to be developed in order to reach an optimal solution: the former is the modelling phase (definition of the design variables and objective function) and the latter concerns the computational aspect (numerical simulations or experiment to be developed). In this paper, an integration between numerical simulations, response surface methodology a…
