Maximizing phonon thermal conductance for ballistic membranes
2007
At low temperatures, phonon scattering can become so weak that phonon transport becomes ballistic. We calculate the ballistic phonon conductance G for membranes using elasticity theory, considering the transition from three to two dimensions. We discuss the temperature and thickness dependence and especially concentrate on the issue of material parameters. For all membrane thicknesses, the best conductors have, counter-intuitively, the lowest speed of sound.
Influence of impurity scattering on Drude response in heavy-fermion UPd2Al3
2010
The frequency-dependent conductivity of heavy-fermion metals can often be described within the picture of the Drude response: the transport relaxation rate is the only relevant frequency scale and, furthermore, reduced by orders of magnitude compared to normal metals. While the relaxation-time enhancement corresponds to the effective-mass enhancement in these materials, i.e. a fundamental material characteristic, the absolute value of the relaxation time depends on the details of the relevant scattering processes. Here we discuss the influence of impurity scattering on the Drude response of the heavy fermions in UPd2Al3 by comparing different thin film samples.
Coping Styles and Social Support in Emergency Workers: Family as a Resource
2015
The nature of the job of people working in emergency situations is such that they may experience high levels of stress. With the term ‘emergency’, we refer to macroscopic events (floods, earthquakes) but also to micro-emergencies, that are more frequent events like accidents and acts of violence. Therefore, the aim of this approach is to help to prevent, or to overcome, the psychic phenomenon that occurs in the victims after a traumatic event that is unexpected and upsetting. In disaster and emergency scenarios, empirical data shows that an effective intervention is able to activate pro-social behaviours, based on social relations and norms; but for emergency workers there are several dange…
Distributed Data Collection for the ATLAS EventIndex
2015
The ATLAS EventIndex contains records of all events processed by ATLAS, in all processing stages. These records include the references to the files containing each event (the GUID of the file) and the internal “pointer” to each event in the file. This information is collected by all jobs that run at Tier-0 or on the Grid and process ATLAS events. Each job produces a snippet of information for each permanent output file. This information is packed and transferred to a central broker at CERN using an ActiveMQ messaging system, and then is unpacked, sorted and reformatted in order to be stored and catalogued into a central Hadoop server. This contribution describes in detail the Producer/Consu…
ATLAS operations in the GridKa T1/T2 Cloud
2011
The ATLAS GridKa cloud consists of the GridKa Tier1 centre and 12 Tier2 sites from five countries associated to it. Over the last years a well defined and tested operation model evolved. Several core cloud services need to be operated and closely monitored: distributed data management, involving data replication, deletion and consistency checks; support for ATLAS production activities, which includes Monte Carlo simulation, reprocessing and pilot factory operation; continuous checks of data availability and performance for user analysis; software installation and database setup. Of crucial importance is good communication between sites, operations team and ATLAS as well as efficient cloud l…
CORAL Server and CORAL Server Proxy: Scalable Access to Relational Databases from CORAL Applications
2011
The CORAL software is widely used at CERN for accessing the data stored by the LHC experiments using relational database technologies. CORAL provides a C++ abstraction layer that supports data persistency for several backends and deployment models, including local access to SQLite files, direct client access to Oracle and MySQL servers, and read-only access to Oracle through the FroNTier web server and cache. Two new components have recently been added to CORAL to implement a model involving a middle tier "CORAL server" deployed close to the database and a tree of "CORAL server proxy" instances, with data caching and multiplexing functionalities, deployed close to the client. The new compon…
STN area detection using K-NN classifiers for MER recordings in Parkinson patients during neurostimulator implant surgery
2016
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) applies electric pulses into the subthalamic nucleus (STN) improving tremor and other symptoms associated to Parkinson's disease. Accurate STN detection for proper location and implant of the stimulating electrodes is a complex task and surgeons are not always certain about final location. Signals from the STN acquired during DBS surgery are obtained with microelectrodes, having specific characteristics differing from other brain areas. Using supervised learning, a trained model based on previous microelectrode recordings (MER) can be obtained, being able to successfully classify the STN area for new MER signals. The K Nearest Neighbours (K-NN) algorithm has bee…
Local structure of gallate proton conductors
2009
Lanthanum barium gallate proton conductors are based on disconnected GaO4 groups. The insertion of hydroxyls in the LaBaGaO4 network proceeds through self-doping with Ba2+, consequent O2- vacancy formation to fulfill charge neutrality. With a structural investigation on self-doped LaBaGaO4 oxides using synchrotron XRD and EXAFS on the Ga K-edge, we find that: (a) the GaO4 tetrahedra retain their size throughout the whole series; (b) the GaO4 tetrahedra rotate as rigid bodies on hydration, leading to the formation of a network of shorter O-O configurations that are stabilized by hydrogen bonds; (c) contraction of the lattice occurs along the a unit cell axis, as a consequence of an overall s…
