Smooth surjections and surjective restrictions

Given a surjective mapping $f : E \to F$ between Banach spaces, we investigate the existence of a subspace $G$ of $E$, with the same density character as $F$, such that the restriction of $f$ to $G$ remains surjective. We obtain a positive answer whenever $f$ is continuous and uniformly open. In the smooth case, we deduce a positive answer when $f$ is a $C^1$-smooth surjection whose set of critical values is countable. Finally we show that, when $f$ takes values in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^n$, in order to obtain this result it is not sufficient to assume that the set of critical values of $f$ has zero-measure.

Fractional viscoelastic beam under torsion

Abstract This paper introduces a study on twisted viscoelastic beams, having considered fractional calculus to capture the viscoelastic behaviour. Further another novelty of this paper is extending a recent numerical approach, labelled line elementless method (LEM), to viscoelastic beams. The latter does not require any discretization neither in the domain nor in the boundary. Some numerical applications have been reported to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the method.

Leadership ethical dimension: a requirement in TQM implementation

Deals with theoretical arguments that justify why the leadership of managers and its ethical dimension is a powerful enabler for TQM efforts to sustain, together with a systematic management. Starts by setting out a multidimensional conception of leadership in which the ethical sphere is explicitly considered. The principles articulating TQM are then analysed, studying the role of leadership and its ethical dimension, in their implementation. Concludes with five propositions, stating that the explicit consideration of leadership’s ethical dimension is required in order to achieve a complete, deep and sustained deployment of TQM principles. Evaluation of toughness by finite fracture mechanics from crack onset strain of brittle coatings on polymers

Crack onset strain measurements of a confined layer in tension provide the means for layer toughness estimation. The procedure can be simplified if steady-state conditions prevail starting from the commencement of crack propagation, an assumption frequently employed in energy release rate evaluation. It is demonstrated, by numerical analysis of experimental data, that an estimate of the defect size in the film is needed in order to reliably evaluate its fracture toughness from the crack onset strain. Stability of degenerate parabolic Cauchy problems

We prove that solutions to Cauchy problems related to the $p$-parabolic equations are stable with respect to the nonlinearity exponent $p$. More specifically, solutions with a fixed initial trace converge in an $L^q$-space to a solution of the limit problem as $p>2$ varies.

This paper presents the use of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) for prediction and analysis of antisense oligonucleotide (AO) efficacy. The collected database comprises 315 AO molecules including 68 features each, inducing a problem well-suited to SVMs. The task of feature selection is crucial given the presence of noisy or redundant features, and the well-known problem of the curse of dimensionality. We propose a two-stage strategy to develop an optimal model: (1) feature selection using correlation analysis, mutual information, and SVM-based recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE), and (2) AO prediction using standard and profiled SVM formulations. European Option Pricing with Transaction Costs and Stochastic Volatility: an Asymptotic Analysis

In this paper the valuation problem of a European call option in presence of both stochastic volatility and transaction costs is considered. In the limit of small transaction costs and fast mean reversion, an asymptotic expression for the option price is obtained. While the dominant term in the expansion it is shown to be the classical Black and Scholes solution, the correction terms appear at $O(\varepsilon^{1/2})$ and $O(\varepsilon)$. The optimal hedging strategy is then explicitly obtained for the Scott's model.
