Estimates for the Differences of Certain Positive Linear Operators
2020
The present paper deals with estimates for differences of certain positive linear operators defined on bounded or unbounded intervals. Our approach involves Baskakov type operators, the kth order Kantorovich modification of the Baskakov operators, the discrete operators associated with Baskakov operators, Meyer&ndash
Euler Characteristics of Moduli Spaces of Curves
2005
Let ${mathcal M}_g^n$ be the moduli space of n-pointed Riemann surfaces of genus g. Denote by ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_g^n$ the Deligne-Mumford compactification of ${mathcal M}_g^n$. In the present paper, we calculate the orbifold and the ordinary Euler characteristic of ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_g^n$ for any g and n such that n>2-2g.
Comparative analysis of corporate tax burden in the euro area during 2000-2013
2016
Traditionally, some countries have been using the Corporate Income Tax as a way of, starting from relatively high nominal tax rates, encourage certain economic activities through incentives or bonuses that allow considerably reduce actual business taxation. In contrast, other member states have chosen to directly lower the tax rate, regardless of other incentives, thus bringing the nominal taxation to effective. This research aims to analyze the discrepancies in the taxation of corporate income tax between different Eurozone countries for the period 2000-2013, noting the differences between the statutory (STR) and effective tax rates (ETR) of listed companies. In this way, this work locates …
Normal pressures and frictional tractions on shallow conical hopper walls after concentric filling: Predictions and experiments
2013
Author's version of an article in the journal: Chemical Engineering Science. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ces.2012.11.028 A silo with a shallow hopper is designed to achieve the required silo capacity when the headroom available is limited, provided that the issue of segregation of stored particulate solids is not a problem. Several analytical models have been proposed to try to predict the design loads for such shallow silo hoppers to guarantee their structural integrity. In this study, a novel finite element analysis has been conducted to explore the development of pressures and tractions on the wall of a full scale shallow hopper when it is filled wit…
Positive L1 observer design for positive Switched systems
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00034-013-9737-6 This paper investigates the problem of L1 observer design for positive switched systems. Firstly, a new kind of positive L1 observer is proposed for positive switched linear delay-free systems with observable and unobservable subsystems. Based on the average dwell time approach, a sufficient condition is proposed to ensure the existence of the positive L1 observer. Under the condition obtained, the estimated error converges to zero exponentially, and the L1 -gain from the disturbance input to the estimated error is less t…
A CUDA-based implementation of an improved SPH method on GPU
2021
We present a CUDA-based parallel implementation on GPU architecture of a modified version of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. This modified formulation exploits a strategy based on the Taylor series expansion, which simultaneously improves the approximation of a function and its derivatives with respect to the standard formulation. The improvement in accuracy comes at the cost of an additional computational effort. The computational demand becomes increasingly crucial as problem size increases but can be addressed by employing fast summations in a parallel computational scheme. The experimental analysis showed that our parallel implementation significantly reduces the runti…
The "Film and Creative Engagement Project" : Audiovisual Accessibility and Telecollaboration
2020
ABSTRACT: Globalisation and the advancement of ICTs invite the development of learners’ strategies and communication skills in higher education to participate fully in digitally networked societies. This paper analyses the results of a pilot study which is part of Film and Creative Engagement (FaCE), a collaborative research project between Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), UK, and Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), Campus Laguna in Torreón, Mexico. There were two main aims: (1) to create a short project that was inspiring, stimulating and enjoyable that could be transferable to other high education institutions; and (2) to provide a training that cou…
Predicting the age at natural menopause in middle-aged women
2021
Objective To predict the age at natural menopause (ANM). Methods Cox models with time-dependent covariates were utilized for ANM prediction using longitudinal data from 47 to 55-year-old women (n = 279) participating in the Estrogenic Regulation of Muscle Apoptosis study. The ANM was assessed retrospectively for 105 women using bleeding diaries. The predictors were chosen from the set of 32 covariates by using the lasso regression (model 1). Another easy-to-access model (model 2) was created by using a subset of 16 self-reported covariates. The predictive performance was quantified with c-indices and by studying the means and standard deviations of absolute errors (MAE ± SD) between the pre…
Inverse problems and invisibility cloaking for FEM models and resistor networks
2013
In this paper we consider inverse problems for resistor networks and for models obtained via the finite element method (FEM) for the conductivity equation. These correspond to discrete versions of the inverse conductivity problem of Calderón. We characterize FEM models corresponding to a given triangulation of the domain that are equivalent to certain resistor networks, and apply the results to study nonuniqueness of the discrete inverse problem. It turns out that the degree of nonuniqueness for the discrete problem is larger than the one for the partial differential equation. We also study invisibility cloaking for FEM models, and show how an arbitrary body can be surrounded with a layer …
Equivariant, Almost-Arborescent Representations of Open simply-Connected 3-Manifolds; A Finiteness result
2004
When one extends the (almost) collapsible pseudo-spine representation theorem for homotopy 3-spheres [Po3] to open simply connected 3-manifolds V 3,new phenomena appear: at the source of the representation, the set of double points is, generally speaking, no longer closed. We show that at the cost of replacing V3 by Vh3 = {V3 with very many holes }, we can always find representations X2 →f V3 with X2 locally finite and almost-arborescent, with Ψ (f) = Φ(f), with the open regular neighbourhood (the only one which is well-defined here) Nbd(f X2) = Vh3 and such that on any precompact tight transversal to the set of double lines, we have only FINITELY many limit points (of the set of double poi…
