Graduate Studies of Global Change at the University of Latvia
2010
In 2008 the University of Latvia (UL) completed an 18-month project of innovation – design, preparation and pilot-test of a 4-semester programme of trans-disciplinary graduate studies in “science, global change, and technologies for sustainable development” based on the experience the project team had acquired during 1997–2006 endorsing studies in “physics and technologies for sustainable development” and organizing two international conferences on “integrative approaches towards sustainability”. Within the project activities 25 members from faculties of natural sciences of the UL prepared and tested innovative courses of a 2 semester pilot programme comprising 4 modules, the audience being…
'Participative foresight scenario mapping': adapting an MCM method to appraise foresight scenarios for the long term sustainable development of a sma…
2016
Multi-criteria mapping (MCM) appraisal has been used in projects involving decisions related to specific technologies or policies in risk analysis. In this research, MCM has been adapted for appraising in a participative way holistic scenarios for a small isolated island. The procedural novelty relies on how the scenario building and the criteria selection were undertaken. Two scenarios for Flores Island (Portugal) were developed in a two step process involving, firstly, specialised stakeholders and decision-makers, and secondly, lay citizens. The scenarios aimed at proposing alternative visions of future. This article analyses the methodological aspects of the project (scenario development…
Aquaculture in Sicily: the state of the art
2009
Aquaculture in Sicily, represented almost exclusively by seabass and sea bream production, together with capture fishery, plays a significant role in the regional economy. On a national basis, the regional production covers about 20% of Italian euryha- line fish production. Fingerling supply is guaranteed by the two hatcheries present on the Island. Twelve floating cage farms and two inshore farms annually produce about 4,000 t of fish. A small extensive production arises from the storage basins of the salt work of Trapani. This niche production could represent an opportunity to realize a new distinctive organic aquaculture, preferred by the consumers respect to intensive produced fish, tha…
Smart technological tools for rising damp on monumental buildings for cultural heritage conservation. A proposal for smart villages implementation in…
2023
The Madonie district, in the inner Sicily, is composed of 21 villages, custodians of heritage, traditions, and values that constitute the identity of this area, now exclusively entrusted to the collective memory of an increasingly elderly and inactive population. In the study area, full of tangible and intangible heritage, technological tools, can revitalize and reuse examples of architecture, especially monumental, whose main problem is a deep rising damp affecting the masonry. That is particularly critical for the historic/traditional architectures. This research implements, in one of the villages of the enclave, a new technology system, namely Information and Commu- nication Technology (…
Modeling and simulation of a digital control design approach for power supply systems
2006
Electronic designers need to model and simulate system features as close as possible to its effective behaviour. Moreover, today, electronics systems are often composed of mixed analog and digital components. The increasing complexity has led to the use of different simulation softwares, each one specific for a particular level of abstraction: mathematical, circuital, behavioural, etc. In order to simulate the entire system these softwares should work together: co-simulation is necessary for digitally controlled power electronics systems. In this paper, the modeling of a digitally controlled switching power supply system using MATLAB/Simulink, ALDEC Active-HDL and Powersys PSIM is presented…
A multidomain approach of the SBEM in the plate bending analysis
2009
The aim of this paper is to apply the multidomain approach of the SBEM to the plate bending analysis. The plate is subdivided into macro-elements connected each other along the interface boundary. Every macro-element is defined by an elastic relation which connects the generalized shear force and moments at the interface to the nodal displacements and rotations of the same boundary and to the loads. This approach allows a considerable reduction of the variables through a condensation process which leaves the interface kinematical unknowns, only. The assembly process may be obtained through the regularity conditions prescribed at the interface.
Holistic Architecture for Music Education: A research design for carrying out empiric and interdisciplinary studies in didactics of music
2019
Integrated Geophysical Investigations at the Greek Kamarina Site (Southern Sicily, Italy)
2018
Kamarina, located in southern Sicily (Italy), was an important Greek colony since its foundation in the sixth century BC. Archaeological excavations, carried out since the twentieth century, uncovered only limited portions of the site so far. Despite the importance of the Greek colony, the presence of remarkable buildings that archaeologists expected to bring to light has not found fully correspondence in the archaeological excavations. Consequently, the integrated geophysical prospection carried out in the study area is aimed to support and address the future archaeological investigations. After the photographic and thermographic survey obtained by an unmanned aerial vehicle, we performed …
Reframing the systemic approach to complex organizations as intangible portfolios
2012
The aim of this paper is to pave the way towards the inclusion of mainstream sociological approaches (based on Luhmann’s approach) for the studies of firms-organizations. In social sciences we can observe that the theoretic consequences of a paradigm shift is signiicantly represented by the evolution of systemic thinking from Parsons to Luhmann. This shift implies the change from the vision of systemic organizations as “structures” to that of systemic organizations as “communication flows”. The milestone of systemic approach in management maybe found in the research and applied works of Anthony Staford Beer with his Viable System Model (VSM) that today faced a relevant reconiguration by Gol…
Cancer: Clinical Background and Key Challenges
2011
This chapter is aimed at a wide audience ranging from biologists to medical students and cancer specialists. It provides a comprehensive overview of systems approaches to the pathology and treatment of cancer. In particular, it addresses diagnosis and therapy by interconnecting various aspects of cancer at both the molecular and clinical level, and contrasts the unifying features of malignancies with the daunting diversity of cancer types, stages, and evolutionary processes during treatment. The importance is emphasized of both prevention and innovative treatments in reducing the cancer burden, and of early detection as the link between these two major areas. It sets the stage for analysis …
