Construction sequence analysis of long-span cable-stayed bridges

2018

Abstract In cantilever construction of long-span cable-stayed bridges the stressing sequence of stays is fundamental for establishing the final configuration of the bridge. The structural behaviour of these bridges is usually evaluated through a forward staged construction analysis, in which the values of the prestressing forces to be applied to stays are the main unknowns. A unified procedure for determining the initial cable forces and for analyzing the entire sequence is presented here, considering the geometric nonlinearity of stays through the Dischinger equivalent elastic modulus. The target is the simultaneous determination of the initial cable forces with the simulation of the const…

Early detection of myocardial damage: A multimodality approach

2019

Cardiovascular diseases are possible complications of antineoplastic treatment and may lead to premature morbidity and mortality among cancer survivors. A symptom-based follow-up is ineffective, and there are growing evidences that early detection of myocardial damage in patients treated with antineoplastic drugs is the key point to prevent the occurrence of damage and improve the prognosis of these patients. Different techniques have been proposed to monitor cardiac function in oncologic patients such as cardiac imaging (echocardiography, nuclear imaging, and cardiac magnetic resonance) and biomarkers (troponin and natriuretic peptides). The European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging/A…

An integrated approach based on uniform quantization for the evaluation of complexity of short-term heart period variability: Application to 24 h Hol…

2007

We propose an integrated approach based on uniform quantization over a small number of levels for the evaluation and characterization of complexity of a process. This approach integrates information-domain analysis based on entropy rate, local nonlinear prediction, and pattern classification based on symbolic analysis. Normalized and non-normalized indexes quantifying complexity over short data sequences (∼300 samples) are derived. This approach provides a rule for deciding the optimal length of the patterns that may be worth considering and some suggestions about possible strategies to group patterns into a smaller number of families. The approach is applied to 24 h Holter recordings of …

Existence and Regularity for a Class of Nonlinear Hyperbolic Boundary Value Problems

2002

AbstractThe regularity of the solution of the telegraph system with nonlinear monotone boundary conditions is investigated by two methods. The first one is based on D'Alembert-type representation formulae for the solution. In the second method the telegraph system is reduced to a linear Cauchy problem with a locally Lipschitzian functional perturbation; then regularity results are established by appealing to the theory of linear semigroups.

Modeling Local Social Migrations: A Cellular Automata Approach

2015

In local social migrations, agents move from their initial location looking for a better local social environment. Social migrations processes do not change the number of social agents of a given type (i.e., the empirical distribution of the population) but their spatial location. Although cellular automata seems to appear as a natural approach to model of social migrations, the evolution of the configuration through a cellular automata might induce a new configuration wherein the number of agents of each type might be actually modified. This article provides a characterization of these cellular automata rules such that for any initial empirical distribution, the evolution of the configurat…

Production of Cultural Policy in Russia: Authority and Intellectual Leadership

2020

The paper discusses different frameworks of knowledge production within the discourses and practices of Russian cultural policy. Russian cultural policy as an administrative sector has been developed in line with two distinctive governmental regimes, more precisely during the period of liberal decentralisation of the 1990s and the conservative centralisation from 2011 up until today. The study focuses on the main changes that have occurred in the framework of policy design and participation in policy-making. An attempt is made to combine Foucauldian analytical frameworks of power and discourse with a Gramscian hegemonic approach to political studies that was mainly advocated by the Essex sc…

EP273 A new integrated pre-surgical diagnostic algorithm to define the local extent of disease in women with cervical cancer

2019

Introduction/Background Survival of patients with cervical cancer is strongly associated with the local extent of the primary disease. For this reason, the new FIGO staging system has given greater importance to instrumental investigations in the pre-surgical evaluation. The objective of this study is to develop an integrated diagnostic algorithm, including ultrasound (US), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical examination under anaesthesia (CEUA), to better define the local extent of disease in patients with newly diagnosed cervical cancer, using histology as the referring gold standard. Methodology Patients with biopsy proven cervical cancer submitted to primary surgery from Janua…

Laparoscopic Total Mesometrial Resection (L-TMMR)

2017

Abdominal radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dis- section as introduced by Wertheim and Meigs [1–2] first in the beginning of the century is still regarded as “gold stan- dard” in the surgical treatment of the uterine cervix carci- noma, FIGO stages IA2-IB and IIA. The resection of the parametrial and paracervical tissues proposed by the conventional radical hysterectomy is based on a “centrifu- gal diffusion” from the center of the tumor on the direction of the parametrial (dorsal, lateral and ventral) highways. This imply a classic functional and ligament-focused view of the surgical anatomy.

Regional and experiential differences in surgeon preference for the treatment of cervical facet injuries: a case study survey with the AO Spine Cervi…

2021

Abstract Purpose The management of cervical facet dislocation injuries remains controversial. The main purpose of this investigation was to identify whether a surgeon’s geographic location or years in practice influences their preferred management of traumatic cervical facet dislocation injuries. Methods A survey was sent to 272 AO Spine members across all geographic regions and with a variety of practice experience. The survey included clinical case scenarios of cervical facet dislocation injuries and asked responders to select preferences among various diagnostic and management options. Results A total of 189 complete responses were received. Over 50% of responding surgeons in each region…

Channel Tracking Guidewire and Technique for Retrograde Approach

2020

Evaluation of the collateral circulation is critical for determining the feasibility of the retrograde approach. When assessing collateral channels it is of paramount importance to take time and review the previous angiogram carefully, for multiple potential collateral pathways, as the predominant collateral may change over time prior to the procedure. Careful review of collaterals prior to the procedure can reduce contrast and radiation dose as well as the duration of the procedure.Retrograde access to the distal vessel can be achieved via septal collaterals, epicardial collaterals (atrial channel), or (patent or occluded) coronary bypass grafts. Generally septals are used more often 65–70…
