Environmentally Relevant Properties of All 209 Polychlorinated Biphenyl Congeners for Modeling Their Fate in Different Natural and Climatic Conditions
2009
The temperature dependence of physical properties and degradation lifetimes in the environment of all polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners (N = 209) were determined. For physical properties, the coefficients A and B in equations log(property) = A(property) − B(property)/T(K) were determined by thermodynamic and QSPR methods and compared with the results of independent methods in the literature. The coefficients Apl and Bpl for liquid state vapor pressure PL, As and Bs for solubility in water SW, Ah and Bh for volatility kH (or kH = PL/SW), and Aow and Bow for lipophilicity (KOW), stored in the database of the fate model program, allowed automatic temperature corrections for realistic fa…
Estimation of vapor pressures, solubilities and Henry's law constants of selected persistent organic pollutants as functions of temperature
1999
Abstract An internally consistent set of temperature dependent physical-chemical property data was derived for 73 persistent organic pollutants, including polychlorinated biphenyls, diphenylethers, dibenzo-p-dioxins, and dibenzofurans, organochlorinated pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Measured data reported in the literature were expanded by different estimation and regression methods. Temperature dependent vapor pressures were estimated from relative gas chromatographic retention times and by a modified Watson equation. Temperature dependent water solubilities were estimated by equations based on mobile order theory modified from Ruelle and Kesselring. The temperature depe…
The combination of heterogeneous photocatalysis with chemical and physical operations: a tool for improving the photoprocess performance
2006
Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a process of great potential for pollutant abatement and waste treatment. In order to improve the overall performance of the photoprocess, heterogeneous photocatalysis is being combined with physical or chemical operations, which affect the chemical kinetics and/or the overall efficiency. This review addresses the various possibilities to couple heterogeneous photocatalysis with other technologies to photodegrade organic and inorganic pollutants dissolved in actual or synthetic aqueous effluents. These combinations increase the photoprocess efficiency by decreasing the reaction time in respect to the separated operations or they decrease the cost in respect o…
Water-insoluble β-cyclodextrin–epichlorohydrin polymers for removal of pollutants from aqueous solutions by sorption processes using batch studies: A…
2017
This review is dedicated to Giangiacomo Torri (Istituto di Chimica e Biochimica G. Ronzoni, Milan, Italy) in celebration of his retirement.; International audience; Although water-insoluble cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin polymers have been known for half a century, these materials are of continued interest to the scientific community, in particular for their interesting environmental applications as sorbents in liquid-solid sorption processes. However, in spite of the abundance of literature and conclusive results obtained at the laboratory scale, interpreting the mechanisms of pollutant elimination remains an interesting source of debate and sometimes of contradiction. This review summarizes…
Novel poly (ionic liquid)-based anion exchange membranes for efficient and rapid acid recovery from industrial waste
2020
Abstract Owing to the less energy consumption, positive impact on the environment, and prospect of providing clean water resources, anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are promising materials for acid recovery from various industrial wastewater/effluent. Based on the diffusion dialysis process, AEMs selectively allow rapid proton permeation while efficiently retaining metal ions. To enhance the efficiency of the acid recovery process, precise control of macromolecular architecture and chemical composition that enables high hydrophilicity, proton conductivity through the membrane, and ion exchange capacity is required. In this direction, we report on the one-step fabrication of novel poly (ionic…

It is shown that the block-like structure of the polyampholyte poly(methacrylic acid)-block-poly(1-methyl-4-vinylpyridinium chloride) considerably influences its conformational behaviour. This specific behaviour is explained by the formation of intra-macromolecular polyelectrolyte complexes stabilized by cooperative ionic contacts between acidic and basic units near the isoelectric point (i. e. p.). The structure of the block-polyampholyte at the i. e. p. is suggested to be close to the structure of non-stoichiometric polyelectrolyte complexes. The complex formation ability of the block-polyampholyte with respect to anionic, cationic, and nonionic polymers is also studied. By means of poten…
Molecular stabilization of chemically exfoliated bare MnPS3 layers
2021
Transition metal chalcogenophosphates of general formula MPX3 have attracted recent interest in the field of 2D materials due to the possibility of tuning their properties when reaching the 2D limit. Several works address this challenge by dry mechanical exfoliation. However, only a few of them use a scalable approach. In this work, we apply a general chemical protocol to exfoliate MnPS3. The method uses in a first step chemical intercalation and liquid phase exfoliation, followed in a second step by the addition of molecules used as capping agents on the inorganic layers. Therefore, molecules of different nature prompts the quality of the exfoliated material and its stabilization in aqueou…

Tamoxifen-loaded polymeric micelles: preparation, physico-chemical characterization and in vitro evaluation studies.
2004
Several samples of polymeric micelles, formed by amphiphilic derivatives of PHEA, obtained by grafting into polymeric backbone of PEGs and/or hexadecylamine groups (PHEA-PEG-C(16) and PHEA-C(16)) and containing different amount of Tamoxifen, were prepared. All Tamoxifen-loaded polymeric micelles showed to increase drug water solubility. TEM studies provided evidence of the formation of supramolecular core/shell architectures containing drug, in the nanoscopic range and with spherical shape. Samples with different amount of encapsulated Tamoxifen were subjected to in vitro cytotoxic studies in order to evaluate the effect of Tamoxifen micellization on cell growth inhibition. All samples of T…
