Effect of air pressure on the electro-generation of H2O2 and the abatement of organic pollutants in water by electro-Fenton process

Abstract The electro-generation of H 2 O 2 and the abatement of the model organic pollutant Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in water by an electro-Fenton process were performed under moderate air pressures (up to 11 bar) for the first time to our knowledge. An increase of the pressure gave rise to a drastic enhancement of the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. In systems pressurized with air at 11 bar, the electro reduction of oxygen at a graphite cathode gave rise to a concentration of H 2 O 2 of about 12 mM, about one order of magnitude higher than that achieved at atmospheric pressure. Aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) are recognized as very suitable techniques for the recovery of target solutes in biological applications. Three new phase diagrams of (UCON 50-HB-5100 + potassium citrate + water), (UCON 50-HB-5100 + sodium formate + water), and (UCON 50-HB-5100 + potassium formate + water) systems were measured at 23 C. The binodal curves were successfully described using the empirical equation suggested by Merchuk and co-workers. The reliability of the tie-line data experimentally determined was evaluated using the equations reported by Othmer–Tobias and Bancroft and satisfactory linearity was obtained for all ATPS. A Study of the Separation of 1-Dodecene and 1-Tetradecene Hydroformylation Products in Aqueous Medium

Abstract Experimental results of the solubilization of olefins in hydroformylation model systems, comprising 1-dodecene and 1-tridecanal or 1-tetradecene and 1-pentadecanal, water, butanol, sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), and/or tri(m-sulfofenyl)phosphine trisodium salt (TPPTS-Na) are presented. The selected systems were used for the hydroformylation of 1-dodecene and 1-tetradecene whereby high yields of aldehydes were obtained. After the reaction, the mixture spontaneously separated into an organic phase with the reaction products and an aqueous phase comprising the catalyst and excess phosphine ligand.

Degradation of heterocyclic aromatic amines in oil under storage and frying conditions and reduction of their mutagenic potential.

Heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAA) were systematically studied concerning their partition behavior in water/oil-systems and their thermostability in different animal derived fats and vegetable oils. Partitioning of IQx-compounds and PhIP in water/oil systems was found to depend on the polarity defined by the molecular structure and on the pH-value of the aqueous phase. In particular, beta-carbolines norharman and harman showed a significant strong lipophilic character at alkaline pH. After heating in frying fats at 130 degrees C, contents of IQx compounds and PhIP were reduced by more than 40% and after heating at 180 degrees C less than 10% of the HAA initial concentration was recovered. Molecular recognition in biotin-streptavidin systems and analogues at the air-water interface

Abstract Specific interaction between biotin and the protein streptavidin in monolayers of synthetic lipids with biotin headgroups has been shown to lead to formation of highly ordered two-dimensional streptavidin crystals. The same behaviour is observed when using desthiobiotin as lipid headgroup which exhibits a significantly lower binding constant compared with biotin (5 × 10 13 M -1 compared with 10 15 M -1 ). This offers the possibility of detaching competetively the 2D crystalline streptavidin layer by addition of free biotin to the aqueous phase. In situ ATR-IR studies in aqueous phase reforming of hydroxyacetone on Pt/ZrO2 and Pt/AlO(OH) catalysts: The role of aldol condensation

Abstract In situ Attenuated Total Reflection Infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy was used to study Aqueous Phase Reforming of hydroxyacetone on Pt/AlO(OH) and Pt/ZrO2 catalysts at 230 °C/ 30 bar. Formation of strongly adsorbed aldol condensation products was observed on the surface of Pt/ZrO2 and ZrO2 in contrast to Pt/AlO(OH) and AlO(OH). Peak assignments were supported by DFT calculations of the IR spectra of the condensation products in vacuum and in the presence of water. Aldol condensation of hydroxyacetone leading to compounds with high molecular weight with unsaturated bonds was suggested as a first step in coke formation. Interactions of volatile aroma compounds with protein in aqueous solutions, especially whey proteins, have received significant attention in recent years. This work attempts to improve our understanding of the mass transfer in multiphasic systems, such as emulsions at the lipid−water interface, and to reveal the role of β-lactoglobulin in the release rate of solutes. For this purpose the rotating diffusion cell has been used. It remains to be determined whether G-protein and R* find one another by membrane surface diffusion of these components (diffusion model) or by diffusion of G-protein through the aqueous phase (hopping model). Study of binding media in works of art by gas chromatographic analysis of amino acids and fatty acids derivatized with ethyl chloroformate

The aim of this work is to identify proteinaceous and oil binding media used in paintings from art collections in the Region of Valencia (Spain). This information is extremely useful for conservation and restoration work. The proposed procedure involves protein and glyceride hydrolysis from sub-milligram samples by treatment with hydrochloric acid, followed by neutralization, partition with chloroform and derivatization with ethyl chloroformate (ECF) of both the aqueous and the organic phases.
