Imaginary Numbers of Climate Change Migrants?

2019

Within the extensive scientific and policy discussions about climate change migrants, detailed analyses continue to highlight the lack of evidence thus far for climate change directly causing migration. To understand better how climate change might or might not lead to migration, this paper explores possibilities for developing a robust, repeatable, and verifiable method to count or calculate the number of people migrating or not migrating due to climate change. The discussion starts by examining definitions of &ldquo

Justice et société dans la France du 18e siècle

2005

Relations between justice and society in 1 8th-century France can no longer be presented simply by legal standards ; they must also take social practice into account. All means of dealing with criminality, whether within (penal and civil) justice or outside state institutions must be analysed. The settlement of conflicts is concretised as a process in pluralism which associates or juxtaposes judicial, sub-judicial and para-judicial modalities, according to the case. Arbitrariness allowed them a great flexibility in their organisation.

MADNESS AND BESTIALIZATION IN EURIPIDES'HERACLES

2013

Against a background of anxious evocation of Dionysiac rites, Euripides'Heraclesstages the extreme degradation of the tragic hero who, as a consequence of the hatred of a divinity, loses his heroic traits and above all his human ones in the exercise of brutal violence. By comparing Heracles in the grip of madness to a furious bull assailing its prey, the tragedian clearly shows the inexorability of the divine will and its arbitrariness, and emphasizes madness itself through images traditionally associated with the bull. However, the reference to monstrosity and animals does not only involve Heracles, but also concerns the representation of Lyssa, the demon of madness sent by Hera to induce …

Las formas de lo arbitrario: los altos y bajos de Towards a Theory of Arbitrary Law-making in Migration Policy de Patricia Mindus

2021

This article has two aims. First, it presents the illuminating recent work of Patricia Mindus on arbitrar…

Media and corruption scandals in Spain: plaintiffs, magnifiers, accomplices?

2013

Starting from the idea that journalism is, in liberal democratic regimes tradition, a brake on the arbitrariness of those who govern and that the media, particu…

2021

The present study deals with the formation of the Italian administrative justice system, the European common principles of administrative law and the ‘jurisdictionalisation’ of administrative justice in the 19th century, providing reasons that explain why the administrative justice system achieved a citizen protection superior to that of the civil law tradition.

“Piero Sraffa: economic reality, the economist and economic theory. An interpretation”.

2007

We carry out a textual analysis of Sraffa's main published contributions to pure economics in order to elaborate a rational reconstruction of an aspect of Sraffa's implicit methodology which has not yet been duly investigated. We refer to the threefold relationship between ‘economic reality’, ‘the economist/observer’ and ‘economic theory’. We elucidate the constraints which, for Sraffa, should bind the economists' arbitrariness and we trace the elements of continuity and evolution from the 1925–6 critique of Marshallian economics to Production of Commodities.

De Cratyle à la TME : une longue tradition dans le débat sur la motivation ou l’arbitraire des mots

2016

In the specialized literature, the concepts of motivation and arbitrariness refer to very different realities. Using some essential readings, we endeavour to clarify these points in the "motivated vs arbitrary nature of lexical forms" debate inaugurated in Plato's Cratylus. Amongst other things, these reveal that the lexical motivation phenomenon is more complex than the supporters of the Saussurian doxa of arbitrariness would have us believe. Even if a considerable amount of time separates the first forms of language from the most ancient linguistic forms available to us and any attempt to reconstruct these original forms is based upon an illusion, it is, nevertheless, possible to decipher…
