Paradigmi mitici, cifre simboliche e rituale funerario: su alcuni crateri figurati dalle necropoli greche di Sicilia
2021
Baucina (Pa) - Monte Falcone 2014. Indagini nella necropoli
2017
The aim of this report is to present the results of rescue excavations, executed in order to contrast illegal excavation at the necropolis at Baucina, in northwestern Sicily, where Punic, Greek and indigenous traditions coexisted. Their relationship is the focus of the ongoing research. The archaeological dataset demonstrates that the interaction between three different ethnicities resulted in an impressive variety of rituals.
2019
A new contextual analysis is proposed in order to reappraise the well known theatrical images from Lipari. In the wake of the researches made by L. Bernabò Brea and M. Cavalier, the clay masks of comic, satyric and tragic characters and figurines, on one hand, and the “theatrical” vases on the other were reputed to echo or to “illustrate” Greek plays, in the frame of a Dionysian cult. Lastly, A. Schwarzmaier reviewed this thesis, pointing at the ritual context in which the masks were used and deposed in a set of drinking and pouring vases near the grave during the burial, and concluding that they were a visual clue of a Dionysian funerary banquet. Examining again the whole evidence (masks,…
Sicily from the Augustan periodo to the Middle Empire: what "romanization"?
2021
From a political-cultural point of view, the impact of the Roman conquest of Sicily can be seen in different aspects: for example, the policy of conquest, the flow of Italici in the island since the II century. B.C., the adoption of architectural structures of Italic tradition already from the Hellenistic age, especially in the sacred architecture. Of course, the situation in Sicily is particularly complex because the Romans did not come into contact with a single culture, but at least with three different ones: the indigenous ("Hellenized"), the Punic and the Greek (in its western colonial form). This makes it particularly difficult to provide a unified picture of the problem. If the relat…
2015
The study considers some aspects of the sacred of Segesta in the Archaic and Classical periods, linked to socio-cultural practices of ideological value, through the analysis of two archaeological contexts: the sanctuary of Contrada Mango and the sacred area on the North Acropolis, documented by some categories of objects recovered in the so-called huge deposit of Grotta Vanella, consisting of material dumped from the summit of Monte Barbaro. The partial excavations and incomplete data published for the sanctuary of Contrada Mango necessitates particular caution in the interpretation of the few elements known. However, one can hypothesize a connection of the cult with water as the sanctuary …
Cignana come caso studio
2021
This essay will examine the trend in imports of African potteries – notably amphorae and fine wares – in a rural zone of southern Sicily. We are dealing with the region of Cignana, not far from the coastline, where archaeological excavations documented a large settlement that experienced a big growth between the 5th and 6th centuries AD. During this period, a shift in the ceramic supply from the Zeugitana towards the Byzacena occurred. Nevertheless, the positive trend in imports persists until the last decades of the 6th century. Thereafter, it shows a decrease until the apparent interruption after the mid-7th century. New changes in the Mediterranean trading system seem to undermine the pr…
The Countryside in Sicily under the Roman Empire: Archaeological Survey and Methodological Approach, Settlements and Resources
2019
The object of this report is to describe the current knowledge about the Roman landscape of Sicily, and the results connected to the archaeological surveys and other similar researches carried out from the eighties…
2014
This paper presents the archaeological and archaeometric results about roman amphorae, coarse/cooking wares and TSA from Termini Imerese (NW Sicily), and the relationships with distribution of same pottery in the hinterland of ancient city, where in the last thirty years the Dept. of Cultural Heritage of University of Palermo have carried out extensive surveys (San Leonardo, Torto and Northern Imera valleys). The research starts up typological and archaeometric studies published in the nineties of last century, now part of a new interdisciplinary program with CNR-IBAM (Catania) and CNRS (Aix-en-Provence). A good documentation of African amphorae, coarse/cooking wares, produced both in Byzac…
