Architettura “cannibale” : nuovi progetti e lacerti di distruzioni
2019
The essay focuses on a list of architectures that preserve and sometimes flaunt parts of previous buildings, destined for demolition. This text explore different motivations and practices that can justify them preservation. Even if the randomness of the events directs towards responses that take into account unexpected economic difficulties, a persistent scepticism towards harmony and completeness emerges in many histories, as well as intriguing symbolic components.

The role of Artificial intelligence in architectural design: conversation with designer and researchers
2020
The proliferation of data together with the increase of computing power in the last decade has triggered a new interest in artificial intelligence methods. Machine learning and in particular deep learning techniques, inspired by the topological structure of neurons network in brains, are omnipresent in the IT discourse, and generated new enthusiasms and fears in our society. These methods have already shown great effectiveness in fields far from architecture and have long been exploited in software that we use every day. Many computing libraries are available for anyone with some programming skills and allow them to "train" a neural network based on several types of data. The world of archi…
Alignment of contact center workforce management implementation with research and ITIL version 3
2010
The purpose of this research is to theoretically validate three contact center workforce management processes models against both the previous research and the ITIL framework version 3. The three models are about processes themselves, processes implementation, and processes and tools implementation together. The research has been conducted in a constructive way. First, the three models that have been used in real-life are described, the relevant ITIL and workforce management research are summarized, and the ITIL framework service lifecycle is explained on the level it is needed. Then, the models are first compared against the ITIL framework and then against the summarized research. The most…
Single Event Upsets Induced by Direct Ionization from Low-Energy Protons in Floating Gate Cells
2017
Floating gate cells in advanced NAND Flash memories, with single-level and multi-level cell architecture, were exposed to low-energy proton beams. The first experimental evidence of single event upsets by proton direct ionization in floating gate cells is reported. The dependence of the error rate versus proton energy is analyzed in a wide energy range. Proton direct ionization events are studied and energy loss in the overlayers is discussed. The threshold LET for floating gate errors in multi-level and single-level cell devices is modeled and technology scaling trends are analyzed, also discussing the impact of the particle track size. peerReviewed
Kokonaisarkkitehtuurin laadun ja kypsyystason yhteys
2017
Digital and quarantine
2021
The epidemic we are facing denies our contemporary liquid world, freezing and expanding its physical distances again. The global city, distributed beyond its geographical borders, interconnected and shared, is now being questioned, as the role of our houses, previous part of a city-ecosystem, now isolated refuges. It is not the first time we face an epidemic, but it is the first time a pandemic hits a global digital world. Digital has offered us a novel way to face the epidemic, transforming IT possibilities in an obligation. This aspect showed us the limits of the digital paradigm, and we are all hit regardless our level of computer literacy: not just some parents who must now deal with e-…
Analysis of MAC-level throughput in LTE systems with link rate adaptation and HARQ protocols
2015
LTE is rapidly gaining momentum for building future 4G cellular systems, and real operational networks are under deployment worldwide. To achieve high throughput performance, in addition to an advanced physical layer design LTE exploits a combination of sophisticated mechanisms at the radio resource management layer. Clearly, this makes difficult to develop analytical tools to accurately assess and optimise the user perceived throughput under realistic channel assumptions. Thus, most existing studies focus only on link-layer throughput or consider individual mechanisms in isolation. The main contribution of this paper is a unified modelling framework of the MAC-level downlink throughput of …
Fra le reti e la città. Lo spazio delle nuove stazioni per l'Alta Velocità
2014
Between networks and cities: Architectural space in the new High-Speed train stations. Over the past thirty years, megainvestment rail projects in Western Europe have become powerful transformation vectors. An extensive literature addresses the issue with an urban engineering oriented approach, concerned primarily with the large scale and focusing on governance and urban planning. This monograph section of “Trasporti & Cultura” examines the relationship of new high-speed railroad stations to their cities. The objective is to investigate the depth and meaning of the transformations being wrought by the new stations, in a comparative international scenario. Articles on Japan and China are fol…
Kirkonrakentajasuku Rijf. Pohjalaisen kirkonrakentajasuvun rakennus- ja suunnittelutuotanto sekä toiminta kustavilaisen aikakauden Suomessa
2016
This dissertation deals with the building and design work of the church builder family Rijf in Österbotten during the Gustavian Period. The Rijfs were Finland- Swedes and entailed four mason-based master builders: Thomas Rijf (1726-1803), his sons Jacob (1753-1808) and Carl (1756-1801), and Jacob´s son Carl Jacobsson Rijf (1783-1808). The most famous member of the family was Jacob Rijf. He was the first Finnish master builder to study at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts and was supervised by the leading architects of the Board of Public Works and Buildings, Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz (1716-1796) and Olof Tempelman (1745-1816). In 1794 Jacob Rijf was appointed as the provincial master builder …
