On a Roadmap to Biologically Inspired Cognitive Agents

2011

A new challenge is proposed for future intelligent artifacts based on biologically inspired cognitive architectures (BICA), called the BICA Challenge. Namely, it is proposed that a BICA agent can only be considered human-level intelligent if it can be accepted and trusted as an equal member (a “person”) by a human community. For example, an agent of this sort would be able to win a political election against human candidates.

Vision and emotional flow in a cognitive architecture for human-machine interaction

2011

The detection and recognition of a human face should meet the need for social interaction that drives a humanoid robot, and it should be consistent with its cognitive model and the perceived scene. The paper deals with the description of the potential of having a system of emotional contagion, and proposes a simple implementation of it. An emotional index allows to build a mechanism which tends to align the emotional states of the robot and the human when a specific object is detected in the scene. Pursuing the idea of social interaction based on affect recognition, a first practical application capable of managing the emotional flow is described, involving both conceptual spaces and an emo…

Understanding the Environment through Wireless Sensor Networks

2007

This paper presents a new cognitive architecture for extracting meaningful, high-level information from the environment, starting from the raw data collected by a Wireless Sensor Network. The proposed framework is capable of building rich internal representation of the sensed environment by means of intelligent data processing and correlation. Furthermore, our approach aims at integrating the connectionist, data-driven model with the symbolic one, that uses a high-level knowledge about the domain to drive the environment interpretation. To this aim, the framework exploits the notion of conceptual spaces, adopting a conceptual layer between the subsymbolic one, that processes sensory data, a…

Human-robot teaming: Perspective on analysis and implementation issues

2019

Interaction in a human-robot team in a changing environment is a big challenge. Several essential aspects that deserve investigation are at the base for efficient interactions. Among them the ability to produce a self-model and to apply elements from the theory of mind. This case is much more cumbersome than just implementing a system in which the various parts have to co-operate and collaborate to achieve a common goal. In the human-robot team, some factors that cannot be known before the execution phase intervene. Our goal is to investigate how a human-human team works and replicate it on the robot by defining a new cognitive architecture which attempts to model all the involved issues. T…

A Dual-Core Coprocessor with Native 4D Clifford Algebra Support

2012

Geometric or Clifford Algebra (CA) is a powerful mathematical tool that is attracting a growing attention in many research fields such as computer graphics, computer vision, robotics and medical imaging for its natural and intuitive way to represent geometric objects and their transformations. This paper introduces the architecture of CliffordCoreDuo, an embedded dual-core coprocessor that offers direct hardware support to four-dimensional (4D) Clifford algebra operations. A prototype implementation on an FPGA board is detailed. Experimental results show a 1.6× average speedup of CliffordCoreDuo in comparison with the baseline mono-core architecture. A potential cycle speedup of about 40× o…

Accelerating large-scale biological database search on Xeon Phi-based neo-heterogeneous architectures

2015

In this paper we present new parallelization techniques for searching large-scale biological sequence databases with the Smith-Waterman algorithm on Xeon Phi-based neoheterogenous architectures. In order to make full use of the compute power of both the multi-core CPU and the many-core Xeon Phi hardware, we use a collaborative computing scheme as well as hybrid parallelism. At the CPU side, we employ SSE intrinsics and multi-threading to implement SIMD parallelism. At the Xeon Phi side, we use Knights Corner vector instructions to gain more data parallelism. We have presented two dynamic task distribution schemes (thread level and device level) in order to achieve better load balancing. Fur…

The projects prepared for "Palermo South-East" are the result of a Graduate Laboratory structured through meetings seminars specialist communications critical exhibitions which - in a shared strategy - saw each student elaborate their work in comparison with others actors of the same Laboratory. The research on "urban projects" was set so that each graduating student was made aware of the projects carried out in the same geographical area by the colleagues who had preceded it so as to be able to operate in continuity and contribute to formulating a unitary reasoning in which each project constituted continuation verification or even variant of the previous ones. These coordinated works have pursued two fundamental objectives: the strengthening of infrastructures and the establishment of specialized public buildings with superior functions aimed at requalifying and regenerating various critical situations with particular attention to the relationship between context and life scenarios. Thus each designer while dealing with a main functional program simultaneously deals with various issues such as the rationalization of the road system the redevelopment of existing buildings the design and refunctionalization of urban services (for example the transformed Central Station in the hotel or the project of a great Mosque)several degree theses have addressed as the main theme or as a question in the background the design of a new bed for the Oreto river and the relative establishment of a park facing it. In this desire to "patch up the wounds" in the different areas of "Palermo South-East" in close relationship with the vicissitudes of the place there is a continuous reference to architectures of all time and some questions involving the functional program are suggested - that identifies the character (or perhaps "type") of what is to be inserted in a given context - and the qualities of living reality as a pivotal material in the design process.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana
