A Multi-channel Communication Framework
2013
We present a modular framework for a business-to-customer communication service integrating several communication channels. Using such a service it is possible to find hidden relationships between messages and thus collect more customer-related data. The framework core is a message-conversion engine capable of converting channel-independent abstract messages into concrete messages and vice-versa. The conversion process is context-dependent. The context consists of formally described communication channel characteristics and user preferences. The framework is based on semantic technologies due to a balance between their expressive power, reasoning properties, and existence of production-qual…
Education in Soil Science: the Italian approach
2017
The Italian Society of Soil Science (SISS) was founded in Florence on February 18th, 1952. It is an association legally acknowledged by Decree of the President of the Italian Republic in February 1957. The Society is member of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) of the European Confederation of Soil Science Societies (ECSSS) and collaborates with several companies, institutions and organizations having similar objectives or policy aspects. SISS promotes progress, coordination and dissemination of soil science and its applications encouraging relationships and collaborations among soil lovers. Within the SISS there are Working Groups and Technical Committees for specific issues o…
Towards a landscape scale management of pesticides: ERA using changes in modelled occupancy and abundance to assess long-term population impacts of p…
2015
Pesticides are regulated in Europe and this process includes an environmental risk assessment (ERA) for nontarget arthropods (NTA). Traditionally a non-spatial or field trial assessment is used. In this study we exemplify the introduction of a spatial context to the ERA as well as suggest a way in which the results of complex models, necessary for proper inclusion of spatial aspects in the ERA, can be presented and evaluated easily using abundance and occupancy ratios (AOR). We used an agent-based simulation system and an existing model for a wide-spread carabid beetle (Bembidion lampros), to evaluate the impact of a fictitious highly-toxic pesticide on population density and the distributi…
An assessment of regulation, education practices and socio-economic perceptions of non-native aquatic species in the Balkans
2021
Alongside climate change, the introduction of non- native species (NNS) is widely recognized as one of the main threats to aquatic biodiversity and human wellbeing. Non-native species and biodiversity are generally low priority issues on the political agendas of many countries, particularly in European countries outside the European Union (EU). The objectives and tasks of this study were to address the policy regulation, education level, education practices, and socioeconomic perceptions of NNS in the Balkans. A questionnaire based survey was conducted in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Turkey (Balkan EU candidate and potential candidate members), in Croatia…
Multisensor Data Fusion in Pervasive Artificial Intelligence Systems
Intelligent systems designed to manage smart environments exploit numerous sensing and actuating devices, pervasively deployed so as to remain invisible to users and subtly learn their preferences and satisfy their needs. Nowadays, such systems are constantly evolving and becoming ever more complex, so it is increasingly difficult to develop them successfully. A possible solution to this problem might lie in delegating certain decisions to the machines themselves, making them more autonomous and able to self-configure and self-manage. This work presents a multi-tier architecture for a complete pervasive system capable of understanding the state of the surrounding environment, as well as usi…
Context-awareness for multi-sensor data fusion in smart environments
2016
Multi-sensor data fusion is extensively used to merge data collected by heterogeneous sensors deployed in smart environments. However, data coming from sensors are often noisy and inaccurate, and thus probabilistic techniques, such as Dynamic Bayesian Networks, are often adopted to explicitly model the noise and uncertainty of data. This work proposes to improve the accuracy of probabilistic inference systems by including context information, and proves the suitability of such an approach in the application scenario of user activity recognition in a smart home environment. However, the selection of the most convenient set of context information to be considered is not a trivial task. To thi…
Memoria e coscienza storiografica nella “praefatio” all’«Ystoriola Langobardorum Beneventum degen-tium» di Erchemperto
2023
In this intervention the reading of the "praefatio" at the «Ystoriola Langobardorum Beneventum degentium» by Erchempert, a Lombard historian of the IXth century, is conducted. The examination allows us to observe, as a preliminary, a historian of the High Middle Ages at his “work table”, in the reference to the sources and models and, at the same time, in the clear awareness of the innovative elements that he proposes to highlight through the story of the tragic and fatal decline of the Lombard people of southern Italy. To this are added other connotations that refer to a precise historiographical awareness, such as the high judgment of himself, the profession of truthfulness of the narrati…
Apprendere una seconda lingua da analfabeti tra ricerca e didattica. Una esperienza con i minori stranieri non accompagnati a Palermo
This contribution presents data and experiences acquired within the frame of the “Inclusion Project Linguistic School of Italian Language for Foreigners” of the University of Palermo. The program, created five years ago, has designed and managed educational courses for adults and unaccompanied minors (msna) of low and very low schooling level, most of them between 16 and 18 years old, and developed a series of social initiatives related to the insertion of these minors in Sicilian Society. These youths are part of a large number of unaccompanied adolescents who, in recent years, have come ashore to the port of Palermo along with thousands of refugees and asylum seekers. A significant number…
Channel Gain Cartography via Mixture of Experts
2020
In order to estimate the channel gain (CG) between the locations of an arbitrary transceiver pair across a geographic area of interest, CG maps can be constructed from spatially distributed sensor measurements. Most approaches to build such spectrum maps are location-based, meaning that the input variable to the estimating function is a pair of spatial locations. The performance of such maps depends critically on the ability of the sensors to determine their positions, which may be drastically impaired if the positioning pilot signals are affected by multi-path channels. An alternative location-free approach was recently proposed for spectrum power maps, where the input variable to the maps…
