Weak intermolecular forces are typically very difficult to observe in highly competitive polar protic solvents as they are overwhelmed by the quantity of competing solvent. This is even more challenging for three-component ternary assemblies of pure organic compounds. This article traces the philosophical idea of self-perception from the times of ancient Stoicism to the thirteenth century by analyzing the views of Seneca, Augustine, and Olivi. We report herein the observation of a hexameric structure of a hydroxyresorc[4]arene in the solid state, enclosing a large interior space. This artificial molecular container is stabilized only by hydrogen bonds. The tendency to form aggregates in solution is demonstrated mainly by means of ESI-MS methods.
