Systematic review of the evidence of interoceptive awareness in performers
2016
Ismael Pedraza, 2016. Systematic review of the evidence of interoceptive awareness in performers. Master s thesis in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Department of Sport Sciences. University of Jyväskylä. Pp. 53. Interoception is the conscious awareness of internal sensations coming from autonomic responses of the body including inputs such as visceral sensations, heart rate, sensations of tight muscles, etc. Those sensations are experienced due to the autonomic nervous system that is in charge of controlling and regulating bodily functions and cannot be manipulated intentionally. Previous research on interoception in performers has shown that a relationship exists between our inner bodily se…
Thermodynamic Interaction Parameters of Tetra-n-undecylcalix[4]resorcinarenes with Selected Solvents Studied by Inverse Gas Chromatography
2004
The basic thermodynamic parameters, characterising intermolecular interactions of tetra-n-undecylcalix[4]resorcinarene and its octaacetate derivative with simple organic solutes, were calculated by using the inverse gas chromatography method. Free energy, enthalpy and entropy of sorption were determined.
A perspective to resorcinarene crowns
2014
In this report, we have summarized different synthesis methods of the resorcinarene crowns, discussed their structural and complexation properties together with the possible application aspects. peerReviewed
Conceptions of Assessment as an Integral Part of Language Learning: A Case Study of Finnish and Chinese University Students
2021
Assessment is viewed as an internal and pivotal part of learning, where cultural factors, previous experiences, and future aspirations affect learners’ perceptions. In recent years, an increasing number of western universities have established their campuses or “dual” programmes in China. In the first Sino–Finnish programme, 293 Finnish and Chinese students participated in the same English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course. This study investigated students’ perceptions of assessment through an adapted version of the “Students’ Conceptions of Assessment” inventory, and it explored if the responses on each conception differ between the groups. …
Kieli objektina : miten lapset mieltävät kielen
2003
In this article, children’s views to language are discussed. The data comes from a project called Situated metalinguistic awareness and foreign language learning. It is argued that in children’s conceptualizations, the knowledge and skills that are required at school are separate from the skills of everyday life. For example, the English they learn in everyday life - “Play Station English” - is not identified with the “Classroom English”. It is suggested that the gap between school and everyday life, or, between different school subjects dealing with language (mother tongue and foreign languages) should be better bridged. peerReviewed
The precursors of double dissociation between reading and spelling in a transparent orthography.
2016
Research and clinical practitioners have mixed views whether reading and spelling difficulties should be combined or seen as separate. This study examined the following: (a) if double dissociation between reading and spelling can be identified in a transparent orthography (Finnish) and (b) the cognitive and noncognitive precursors of this phenomenon. Finnish-speaking children (n = 1963) were assessed on reading fluency and spelling in grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. Dissociation groups in reading and spelling were formed based on stable difficulties in grades 1–4. The groups were compared in kindergarten phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming, letter knowledge, home literacy environment, a…
Early Cognitive Profiles Predicting Reading and Arithmetic Skills in Grades 1 and 7
2020
The aim of this study was to investigate cognitive profiles composed of skills predicting the overlap between reading and arithmetic in kindergarten (phonological awareness, letter knowledge, rapid automatized naming, and counting sequence knowledge) and the relation of these profiles to reading and arithmetic skills at Grades 1 and 7. A total of four distinct cognitive profiles were identified in an unselected sample of 1,710 children aged 5–6 years: (1) high linguistic and high counting skills (39.2%), (2) low linguistic and low counting skills (25.4%), (3) high counting skills in relation to linguistic skills (15.3%), and (4) low counting skills in relation to linguistic skills (20.1%). …
A cultural comparison of mindfulness and student performance: Evidence from university students in five countries
2021
Societal and cultural norms are important in shaping how individuals live, study, and work. Of particular interest in recent research is the role of mindfulness, defined as the ability to focus on the present moment, and how it can impact cognitive function and productivity. This study examines the relationship between scholastic achievement and mindfulness among university students in China, Finland, Germany, South Africa, and the United States. Comparisons between countries with respect to self-reported measures of mindfulness, test anxiety levels, and phone usage are analyzed. These measures are used to determine whether mindfulness affects student performance in introductory economics c…
Perceived sufficiency of physical activity levels among adults at high risk of type 2 diabetes. The FIN-D2D study
2012
Purpose. This study assessed the determinants of perceived physical activity levels (PALs) among adults at high risk of diabetes, and the associations with self-reported physical activity. Methods. In total, 10,149 adults participated in the FIN-D2D lifestyle intervention at baseline. Opportunistic screening was used in identifying high risk individuals. Physical activity and perceived PAL sufficiency were assessed and compared. Key risk factors for diabetes and psychosocial and demographic characteristics were analyzed as determinants using logistic regression. Results. PAL sufficiency was rated realistically by 73% of men and 75% of women. Perception of sufficient PAL was more likely amon…
