Extending the Limits of Nature. Political Animals, Artefacts, and Social Institutions
2020
This essay discusses how medieval authors from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries dealt with a philosophical problem that social institutions pose for the Aristotelian dichotomy between natural and artificial entities. It is argued that marriage, political community, and language provided a particular challenge for the conception that things which are designed by human beings are artefacts. Medieval philosophers based their arguments for the naturalness of social institutions on the anthropological view that human beings are political animals by nature, but this strategy required rethinking the borderline between nature and art. The limits of nature were extended, as social institution…
The Form is Not a Proper Part in Aristotle’s Metaphysics Z.17, 1041b11–33
2018
When Aristotle argues at the 'Metaphysics' Z.17, 1041b11–33 that a whole, which is not a heap, contains ‘something else’, i.e. the form, besides the elements, it is not clear whether or not the form is a proper part of the whole. I defend the claim that the form is not a proper part within the context of the relevant passage, since the whole is divided into elements, not into elements and the form. Different divisions determine different senses of ‘part’, and thus the form is not a part in the same sense as the elements are parts. I object to Koslicki’s (2006) interpretation, according to which the form is a proper part along the elements in a single sense of ‘part’, although she insists th…
This paper purports an interpretation of the Aristotelian theory of equity from the point of view of an argumentative approach to law. Once the main ideas of the legal philosophy of Aristotle are framed in the context of his moral and political phi…
Aristotle’s Doctrine of Causes and the Manipulative Theory of Causality
2018
I will argue for the similarity between some aspects of Aristotle’s doctrine of causes and a particular kind of interventionist theory of causality. The interventionist account hypothesizes that there is a connection between causation and human intervention: the idea of a causal relation between two events is generated by the reflection of human beings on their own operating. This view is remindful of the Aristotelian concept of αἴτιον (cause), which is linked to the figure of the αἴτιος, the person who is responsible of an action. Aristotle conceives of the efficient cause as the active element which, in the φύσις, gives rise to movement and imposes the form, in analogy with the active ele…
Valutare il merito. Pistis ed epiekeia nella Retorica di Aristotele.
2017

Developing pedagogical practices under umbrellas of different colours
2019
The aim of this article is to introduce different ways to conceptualise approaches aimed at improving practices by combining practitioners’ professional work and research. In historical terms, the oldest of these approaches is action research which was introduced in the 1940’s. Thereafter, approaches combining practical work with academic aspirations have been conceptualised in a number of ways, such as design research, translational research, developmental work research (DWR) and practitioner research, and their numerous versions and combinations. Secondly, the purpose of this paper is, from a philosophical and theoretical perspective, to examine the relationship between theoretical and pr…
Sulla natura relazionale del bene
2018
The roots of this possibility are sought in the Aristotelian idea of human good in its relationship with the divine, also leaning on developments in Thomas Aquinas
