Acoustic wave guides as infinite-dimensional dynamical systems
2015
We prove the unique solvability, passivity/conservativity and some regularity results of two mathematical models for acoustic wave propagation in curved, variable diameter tubular structures of finite length. The first of the models is the generalised Webster's model that includes dissipation and curvature of the 1D waveguide. The second model is the scattering passive, boundary controlled wave equation on 3D waveguides. The two models are treated in an unified fashion so that the results on the wave equation reduce to the corresponding results of approximating Webster's model at the limit of vanishing waveguide intersection.
Regularity and modulus of continuity of space-filling curves
2019
We study critical regularity assumptions on space-filling curves that possess certain modulus of continuity. The bounds we obtain are essentially sharp, as demonstrated by an example. peerReviewed
Envelopes for sets and functions II: generalized polarity and conjugacy
2018
International audience; Let X,Y be two nonempty sets, Φ an extended real-valued bivariate coupling function on X × Y and Γ a subset of X × Y. The present paper provides extensions to the well-known generalized Φ-conjugacy and Γ-polarity of diverse results of our previous work [2] related to φ-conjucacy and Λ-polarity, where Λ is a subset of a vector space E and φ is a function on E defining the particular coupling function (x,y)→φ(x−y) on E × E. A particular attention is devoted to the conjugacy functions (resp. polarity sets) which are mutually generating. Finally, for a superadditive conjugacy function Φ, we obtain a full description of the class of Φ-envelopes.
Experimental Characterization and Acoustic Correction of a Multipurpose Performance Hall: The Italian Theatre “Cavallino Bianco”
2022
This study presents the retrofit acoustic dq1esign of the Italian theatre “Cavallino Bianco”. In its historical configuration, the hall had a curved roof with a pressed-plant fiber ceiling, which was demolished and replaced with a wooden roof without a false ceiling, leading to an increase in volume and a worsening of the reverberation time. This study proposed the realization of a wave ceiling and the application of sound-absorbing and reflecting panels on the walls, which have already been implemented. These modifications have affected the acoustic characterization of the theatre, as shown both through on-site measurements during the main construction phases and through numerical simulati…
Refugee testimonies enacted : voice and solidarity in media art installations
2018
This article examines how two media art installations in which celebrity actors enact refugee storytelling create awareness of the complexities of representation and solidarity with refugees. The celebrity actor produces familiarity, or “audibility,” for contents of the stories. Yet at the same time, the familiarity of the actor alerts the visitor to the politics of listening. The artworks therefore produce the potential for ethical listening, which requires interrogation into the privileges of the listener. The artworks produce a kind of sociality different from that of typical celebrity advocacy. Instead of being at the center of attention, the actors’ presence draws critical attention to…
Residential segregation of foreigners: an analysis of the Italian city of Palermo
2015
Ethnic residential segregation in Italy is an emerging key question, which will be crucial in the definition and implementation of both urbanistic and social policies. This paper focuses on this phenomenon in the Italian city of Palermo. We use individual data for all the population residing in the city at 31 December 2011, organized by ethnicity and district. Firstly, we describe the spatial distribution and the residential segregation of foreigners in the city, applying many different segregation measures. Among the others, we also apply the Duncan and Duncan dissimilarity index. Finally, we apply a recent methodological approach, which allows reducing the bias of the Duncan’s index…
Human Duties and Rights in an Intercultural Perspective
2022
This paper reflects on the possibility of opening new ways of revaluing the role of human responsibilities and duties by establishing a relationship with rights that goes further than a simple correspondence between correlative terms. Approaching the interdependence between the language of rights and the language of duties from an intercultural perspective helps achieve an increasingly broader, but necessarily more complex, consensus. This analysis goes back to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which left duties in the background but showed the incipient presence of an intercultural purpose thanks to the work of UNESCO. The final part of the paper is devoted to those international …
Wpływ traktatu lizbońskiego na regulacje imigracyjne UE ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zasady solidarności i sprawiedliwego podziału odpowiedzialności…
2018
The Influence of the Treaty of Lisbon on the EU Immigration Regulations with Particular Attention to the Principle of Solidarity and Fair Sharing of Responsibility Between Member StatesAnalysis of the influence of the Treaty of Lisbon on the EU immigration regulations with particular attention to the principle of solidarity and fair sharing of responsibility between Member States indicates that the Treaty of Lisbon extensively reformed these regulations. Its premise and mechanisms should be assessed as justified. However, they give a lot of leeway for interpretation and need to be supplementedwith EU secondary law. Unfortunately, states are primarily driven by their interest when applying t…
Mtlinteracts with members of Egfr signaling and cell adhesion genes in the Drosophila eye
2011
Mtl is a member of the Rho family of small GTPases in Drosophila. It was shown that Mtl is involved in planar cell polarity (PCP) establishment, together with other members of the same family like Cdc42, Rac1, Rac2 and RhoA. However, while Rac1, Rac2 and RhoA function downstream of Dsh in Fz/PCP signaling and upstream of a JNK cassette, Mtl and Cdc42 do not. To determine the functional context of Mtl during PCP establishment in the Drosophila eye, we performed a loss-of-function screen to search for dominant modifiers of a sev>Mtl rough eye phenotype. In addition, genetic interaction assays with candidate genes were also carried out. Our results show that Mtl interacts genetically with memb…
A novel microtubule de-stabilizing complementarity-determining region C36L1 peptide displays antitumor activity against melanoma in vitro and in vivo
2015
AbstractShort peptide sequences from complementarity-determining regions (CDRs) of different immunoglobulins may exert anti-infective, immunomodulatory and antitumor activities regardless of the specificity of the original monoclonal antibody (mAb). In this sense, they resemble early molecules of innate immunity. C36L1 was identified as a bioactive light-chain CDR1 peptide by screening 19 conserved CDR sequences targeting murine B16F10-Nex2 melanoma. The 17-amino acid peptide is readily taken up by melanoma cells and acts on microtubules causing depolymerization, stress of the endoplasmic reticulum and intrinsic apoptosis. At low concentrations, C36L1 inhibited migration, invasion and proli…
