The Topology of the Milnor Fibration

The fibration theorem for analytic maps near a critical point published by John Milnor in 1968 is a cornerstone in singularity theory. It has opened several research fields and given rise to a vast literature. We review in this work some of the foundational results about this subject, and give proofs of several basic “folklore theorems” which either are not in the literature, or are difficult to find. Large time behavior for a porous medium equation in a nonhomogeneous medium with critical density

Abstract We study the large time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation in nonhomogeneous media with critical singular density | x | − 2 ∂ t u = Δ u m , in R N × ( 0 , ∞ ) , where m > 1 and N ≥ 3 , with nonnegative initial condition u ( x , 0 ) = u 0 ( x ) ≥ 0 . The asymptotic behavior proves to have some interesting and striking properties. We show that there are different asymptotic profiles for the solutions, depending on whether the continuous initial data u 0 vanishes at x = 0 or not. Harmony perception and regularity of spike trains in a simple auditory model

A probabilistic approach for investigating the phenomena of dissonance and consonance in a simple auditory sensory model, composed by two sensory neurons and one interneuron, is presented. We calculated the interneuron’s firing statistics, that is the interspike interval statistics of the spike train at the output of the interneuron, for consonant and dissonant inputs in the presence of additional "noise", representing random signals from other, nearby neurons and from the environment. We find that blurry interspike interval distributions (ISIDs) characterize dissonant accords, while quite regular ISIDs characterize consonant accords. Sicily and its «Constitutions» (1812, 1848, 1860, 1946) The essay highlights the constitutional evolution of Sicily, tracing it back to the British Mediterranean constitutionalism and the condition of the insularity of Sicily: starting from the «ephemeral constitution of 1812», passing through the «inconclusive revolution of 1820» and reaching the «glorious revolution» and the Constitution of 1848, then to the fundamental Charter never born, such as the Statute of 1860, up to the Autonomist Statute of 1946. The latter constitutes the reference of the Sicilian special autonomy in republican Italy, among roots, intuitions, and contradictions.
New Geometric Constraint Solving Formulation: Application to the 3D Pentahedron

Geometric Constraint Solving Problems (GCSP) are nowadays routinely investigated in geometric modeling. The 3D Pentahedron problem is a GCSP defined by the lengths of its edges and the planarity of its quadrilateral faces, yielding to an under-constrained system of twelve equations in eighteen unknowns. In this work, we focus on solving the 3D Pentahedron problem in a more robust and efficient way, through a new formulation that reduces the underlying algebraic formulation to a well-constrained system of three equations in three unknowns, and avoids at the same time the use of placement rules that resolve the under-constrained original formulation. Unitarity constraint for threshold coherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron

The contribution of the two-step process {gamma}d{r_arrow}pn{r_arrow}{pi}{sup 0}d to the imaginary part of the amplitude for coherent pion production on the deuteron is calculated at threshold exploiting unitarity constraints. The result shows that this absorptive process is not negligible and has to be considered in an extraction of the elementary neutron production amplitude from the {gamma}d{r_arrow}{pi}{sup 0}d cross section at threshold. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
