Genetic Network construction in CML gene expression profile data analysis

2009

Aim of this paper is to define a new statistical framework to identify central modules in Gaussian Graphical Models (GGMs) estimated by gene expression data measured on a sample of patients with negative molecular response to imatinib. A central module is defined as a module of a GGM which contains genes that are defined differentially expressed.

Applicability of the log MM - √D relationship to linear polyacrylamide gradient gel electrophoresis under a wide range of experimental conditions

1982

Recently we reported about a linear correlation between the logarithm of the size of native proteins (log mol mass or log Stokes' radius) and the square root of their migration distance (- √D) in linear polyacrylamide (PAA)-gradient gels (G. M. Rothe and H. Purkhanbaba, Electrophoresis 1982, 3, 33–42). The linearity between log MM and √D is not subject to time using homogeneous buffers in electrophoresis, no matter how the constants of the corresponding regression lines, slope and intercept change as a function of time. The realiability of this correlction has been re-examined with 0.7 mm thin gel plates and extending the time of electrophoresis under non-denaturating conditions from 2 to 9…

Donne, corpi e territori: riflessioni sulla transitorietà

2023

L’arit…

Reversal of Gender Disparity in Journalism Education- Study of Ghana Institute of Journalism

2017

Journalism has practically become a feminine profession across the world. To understand the root of the flow of women into the Journalism profession it is pertinent to begin at the university education level. Gallagher’s 1992 worldwide survey of female students in 83 journalism institutions reveals a significant increase in number of female students. Djerf-Pierre (2007) and others argue along Bourdieu’s conception of education as a form of social capital which empowers, enables and enhances women’s competitiveness in a pre-dominantly androgynous social arena. The study analyses 16 years of enrolment data of the Academic Affairs Unit of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), a leading Jour…

Sorting of a secretory protein (gp80) to the apical surface of Caco-2 cells

1994

We have investigated the synthesis and polarized secretion of the exogenous gp80 glycoprotein complex in the human epithelial adenocarcinoma cell line, Caco-2. gp80 is secreted at the apical surface of Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells and should, therefore, display the signal(s) required for sorting into the apical exocytic pathway. In Caco-2 cells, no bona fide secretory protein released preferentially at the apical surface has been described so far. To address the question of whether Caco-2 cells possess a machinery capable of delivery of secretory proteins at the apical surface, we stably transfected the cells with a recombinant gene coding for the gp80 glycoprotein complex. Pulse-…

THE SHAPLEY-SOLIDARITY VALUE FOR GAMES WITH A COALITION STRUCTURE

2013

A value for games with a coalition structure is introduced, where the rules guiding cooperation among the members of the same coalition are different from the interaction rules among coalitions. In particular, players inside a coalition exhibit a greater degree of solidarity than they are willing to use with players outside their coalition. The Shapley value is therefore used to compute the aggregate payoffs for the coalitions, and the solidarity value to obtain the payoffs for the players inside each coalition.

Exploring social media network landscape of post-Soviet space

2019

The “post-Soviet space” consists of countries with a substantial fraction of the world’s population; however, unlike many other regions, its social media network landscape is still somewhat under-explored. This paper aims at filling this gap. To this purpose, we use anonymized data on user friendships at VK.com (also known as VKontakte and, informally, as “Russian Facebook”), which is the largest and most popular social media portal in the post-Soviet space with hundreds of millions of user accounts. Using the VK network snapshots from October 2015 to December 2016, we conduct a “multiscale” empirical study of this network by considering conn…

Adapted Transfer of Distance Measures for Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships and Data-Driven Selection of Source Datasets

2012

Quantitative structure–activity relationships are regression models relating chemical structure to biological activity. Such models allow to make predictions for toxicologically relevant endpoints, which constitute the target outcomes of experiments. The task is often tackled by instance-based methods, which are all based on the notion of chemical (dis-)similarity. Our starting point is the observation by Raymond and Willett that the two families of chemical distance measures, fingerprint-based and maximum common subgraph-based measures, provide orthogonal information about chemical similarity. This paper presents a novel method for finding suitable combinations of them, called adapted tran…

F-singularities via alterations

2011

For a normal F-finite variety $X$ and a boundary divisor $\Delta$ we give a uniform description of an ideal which in characteristic zero yields the multiplier ideal, and in positive characteristic the test ideal of the pair $(X,\Delta)$. Our description is in terms of regular alterations over $X$, and one consequence of it is a common characterization of rational singularities (in characteristic zero) and F-rational singularities (in characteristic $p$) by the surjectivity of the trace map $\pi_* \omega_Y \to \omega_X$ for every such alteration $\pi \: Y \to X$. Furthermore, building on work of B. Bhatt, we establish up-to-finite-map versions of Grauert-Riemenscheneider and Nadel/Kawamata-V…
