Acoustically driven arrayed waveguide grating.

2015

We demonstrate compact tunable phased-array wavelength-division multiplexers driven by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in the low GHz range. The devices comprise two couplers, which respectively split and combine the optical signal, linked by an array of single-mode waveguides (WGs). Two different layouts are presented, in which multi-mode interference couplers or free propagating regions were separately employed as couplers. The multiplexers operate on five equally distributed wavelength channels, with a spectral separation of 2 nm. A standing SAW modulates the refractive index of the arrayed WGs. Each wavelength component periodically switches paths between the output channel previously asi…

Extended gate electrode arrays for extracellular signal recordings

2000

Abstract We have fabricated arrays of planar gold electrodes arranged in a matrix of 8×8 with active areas ranging from 6 to 30 μm in diameter. An electronic amplification circuitry based on commercial junction field-effect transistors was used where the gold sensor fields act as extended gate electrodes (EGE) of the transistors, which leads to a new approach for long-term extracellular recording systems in vitro. The high input resistance of the amplification circuitry allows the use of small planar bare gold electrodes without further modification which therefore extends the frequency range of the measuring set-up down to the DC-level. The performance of our recording system has been test…

Ultrasonic phased array inspection of wire plus arc additive manufacture samples using conventional and total focusing method imaging approaches

2019

In this study, three aluminium samples produced by wire + arc additive manufacture (WAAM) are inspected using ultrasonic phased array technology. Artificial defects are machined using a centre drill, ø 3 mm, and electrical discharge machining (EDM), ø 0.5-1 mm, in a cylindrical through-hole topology. The samples are first inspected using a single-element wheel probe mounted on a KUKA robot in order to investigate the feasibility of using a conventional ultrasonic transducer approach. Unfortunately, the wheel probe is found to be unsuitable for scanning the WAAM specimens and ultrasonic phased arrays are employed next. The set-up includes 5 MHz and 10 MHz arrays (128 elements) in direct cont…

Microwave phase shifter based on fibre Bragg grating

1998

A variable delay line is presented for phased array antennas based on a fibre Bragg grating which has a uniform period and operates at constant optical wavelength. The Bragg wavelength of a localised part of the fibre grating is modified by straining the fibre, the optical carrier is reflected by the strained part of the grating and the time delay of the microwave modulating signal is determined by the position where the strain has been applied. In this initial experiment time delay variations up to 330 ps in the frequency range 1 – 14 GHz have been achieved.

Colloidal lithography and Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition process integration to fabricate ZnO nanohole arrays

2010

A complete set up of optimal process conditions for an effective colloidal lithography/catalyst assisted MOCVD process integration is presented. It mainly focuses on the determination of the deposition temperature threshold for ZnO Metal-Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) as well as the concentration of metal-organic silver (Ag) catalyst. Indeed, the optimization of such process parameters allows to tailor the ZnO film morphology in order to make the colloidal lithography/catalyst assisted MOCVD approach a valuable bottom up method to fabricate bi-dimensional ordered ZnO nanohole arrays. Construction and optimality of a special class of balanced designs

2006

The use of balanced designs is generally advisable in experimental practice. In technological experiments, balanced designs optimize the exploitation of experimental resources, whereas in marketing research experiments they avoid erroneous conclusions caused by the misinterpretation of interviewed customers. In general, the balancing property assures the minimum variance of first-order effect estimates. In this work the authors consider situations in which all factors are categorical and minimum run size is required. In a symmetrical case, it is often possible to find an economical balanced design by means of algebraic methods. Conversely, in an asymmetrical case algebraic methods lead to e…

First lamina hybridization of high performance CFRP with Kevlar fibers: Effect on impact behavior and nondestructive evaluation

2022

The impact behavior of a carbon-Kevlar hybrid composite, widely used in sport car manufacturing, was evaluated. To highlight the hybridization effect, comparative analyses were performed with the basic CFRP laminate having the same lay-up. Tensile, bending and low velocity impact tests, followed by nondestructive inspections, highlighted that Kevlar first lamina hybridization leads to an increment in specific impact strength, up to 55%. To assess the most reliable technique to detect the impact damage, nondestructive evaluation was performed by pulsed thermography, phased array ultrasonic technique, computed tomography and digital radiography. Phased array ultrasonic technique can be consid…

Evaluation of T7 and lambda phage display systems for survey of autoantibody profiles in cancer patients.

2008

In the current study we attempted to evaluate the suitability of T7 Select 10-3b and lambdaKM8 phage display systems for the identification of antigens eliciting B cell responses in cancer patients and the production of phage-displayed antigen microarrays that could be exploited for the monitoring of autoantibody profiles. Members of 15 tumour-associated antigen (TAA) families were cloned into both phage display vectors and the TAA mini-libraries were immunoscreened with 22 melanoma patients' sera resulting in the detection of reactivity against members of 5 antigen families in both systems, yet with variable sensitivity. T7 phage display system showed greater sensitivity for the detection …

Dust Production and Particle Acceleration in Supernova 1987A Revealed with ALMA

2013

Supernova (SN) explosions are crucial engines driving the evolution of galaxies by shock heating gas, increasing the metallicity, creating dust, and accelerating energetic particles. In 2012 we used the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array to observe SN 1987A, one of the best-observed supernovae since the invention of the telescope. We present spatially resolved images at 450um, 870um, 1.4mm, and 2.8mm, an important transition wavelength range. Longer wavelength emission is dominated by synchrotron radiation from shock-accelerated particles, shorter wavelengths by emission from the largest mass of dust measured in a supernova remnant (>0.2Msun). For the first time we show unambig…
