Level-Crossing Rate and Average Duration of Fades in Non-Isotropic Hoyt Fading Channels with Applications to Selection Combining Diversity
2015
In this paper, we investigate the second-order statistics of Hoyt fading channels under non isotropic scattering scenarios. Assuming an asymmetrical Doppler power spectral density (PSD), we derive, in the form of single finite-range integrals, expressions for the level-crossing rate (LCR) and average duration of fades (ADF). These new results are then applied to obtain the LCR and ADF of selection combining (SC) diversity over non-isotropic Hoyt channels. In addition to their importance for studying the system performance and characterizing the dynamic behavior of multipath fading channels, the formulas derived are general in that they can be applied to many non-isotropic scattering situati…
Statistical analysis of inter-arrival times of rainfall events for Italian Sub-Alpine and Mediterranean areas
2012
Abstract. In this work a set of time-series of inter-arrival times of rainfall events, at daily scale, was analysed, with the aim to verify the issue of increasing duration of dry periods. The set consists of 12 time-series recorded at rain gauges in 1926–2005, six of them belong to an Italian Sub-Alpine area (Piedmont) and six to a Mediterranean one (Sicily). In order to overcome the problem related to limited sample size for high values of inter-arrival times, the discrete probability polylog-series distribution was used to fit the empirical data from partial (20 yr) time-series. Moreover, a simple qualitative trend analysis was applied to some high quantiles of inter-arrival times as wel…
A Bayesian direction-of-arrival model for an undetermined number of sources using a two-microphone array.
2014
Sound source localization using a two-microphone array is an active area of research, with considerable potential for use with video conferencing, mobile devices, and robotics. Based on the observed time-differences of arrival between sound signals, a probability distribution of the location of the sources is considered to estimate the actual source positions. However, these algorithms assume a given number of sound sources. This paper describes an updated research account on the solution presented in Escolano et al. [J. Acoust. Am. Soc. 132(3), 1257-1260 (2012)], where nested sampling is used to explore a probability distribution of the source position using a Laplacian mixture model, whic…
Automatic Detection and Characterization of Acoustic Plane-Wave Reflections Using Circular Microphone Arrays
2013
The spatial characteristics of the sound field inside a room can be meaningfully described by means of microphone array processing techniques. In this context, the set of impulse responses sampled by a microphone array can be seen as an image made of acoustic plane-wave footprints. Due to the circular geometry of the microphone array, these footprints have a cosine-like shape that can be fully described as a function of the direction of arrival (DOA) of the impinging plane wave. This paper proposes a Hough-transform-based approach to plane-wave detection in microphone array multi-trace impulse responses. Experiments using a set of real microphone recordings are described, showing the potent…
Comparing Performances of Turbo-roundabouts and Double-lane Roundabouts
2012
Starting from assumptions regarding the arrival process of circulating streams and according to models based on the gap-acceptance theory, the paper is aimed at comparing operational performances between basic turbo-roundabouts and double-lane roundabouts. The paper proposes applications of the Hagring model for entry capacity estimations at double-lane roundabouts and turbo-roundabouts, these latter, in particular, featured by movements with only one or two conflicting traffic streams. This model allows to use, in fact, a bunched exponential distribution to quantify the distribution of major vehicle headways; it also considers specific values different by each lane for behavioural paramete…
Visitor arrivals forecasts amid COVID-19: A perspective from the Africa team
2021
Abstract COVID-19 disrupted international tourism worldwide, subsequently presenting forecasters with a challenging conundrum. In this competition, we predict international arrivals for 20 destinations in two phases: (i) Ex post forecasts pre-COVID; (ii) Ex ante forecasts during and after the pandemic up to end 2021. Our results show that univariate combined with cross-sectional hierarchical forecasting techniques (THieF-ETS) outperform multivariate models pre-COVID. Scenarios were developed based on judgemental adjustment of the THieF-ETS baseline forecasts. Analysts provided a regional view on the most likely path to normal, based on country-specific regulations, macroeconomic conditions,…

Observation of the cosmic-ray shadow of the Moon with IceCube
2013
We report on the observation of a significant deficit of cosmic rays from the direction of the Moon with the IceCube detector. The study of this "Moon shadow" is used to characterize the angular resolution and absolute pointing capabilities of the detector. The detection is based on data taken in two periods before the completion of the detector: between April 2008 and May 2009, when IceCube operated in a partial configuration with 40 detector strings deployed in the South Pole ice, and between May 2009 and May 2010 when the detector operated with 59 strings. Using two independent analysis methods, the Moon shadow has been observed to high significance (> 6 sigma) in both detector config…
An Experimental Characterization of Time of Arrival Accuracy for Time Synchronization of Medium Voltage Smart Grid Solutions
2019
The time synchronization of smart grid devices is a critical feature for the successful application of advanced grid monitoring and control techniques. Synchronization mechanisms based on the accurate estimation of the Time of Arrival (ToA) of network messages - sent over power line cables - are a promising solution to achieve synchronization tasks over distribution lines. In this paper, a chirp-based synchronization technique over the Medium Voltage (MV) grid has been proposed and characterized. Such approach has the benefit of not requiring the installation of a dedicated infrastructure, thanks to the exploitation of power distribution lines for the transmission of time synchronization da…
A Unified Disk Scattering Model and Its Angle-of-Departure and Time-of-Arrival Statistics
2013
This paper proposes a novel probability density function (PDF) for the distribution of local scatterers inside a disk centered on the mobile station (MS). The new scattering model is introduced as the unified disk scattering model (UDSM), as it unifies a variety of typical circularly symmetric scattering models into one simple model. By adjusting a designated shape factor controlling the distribution of the scatterers, both the uniform circular and uniform ring scattering models can be obtained as special cases. Furthermore, the original Gaussian and uniform hollow-disk scattering models can be approximated with a high level of accuracy. In addition to these established scattering models, a…
