High Degree of Realism in Teaching Percutaneous Coronary Interventions by Combining a Virtual Reality Trainer With a Full Scale Patient Simulator

2008

The virtual reality coronary angiography simulator "CATHI" (Catheter Instruction System, Mannheim, Germany) simulates coronary arteries with implemented vessel lesions in virtual patients. Like similar systems the software model runs on common PC systems, which are linked to the mechanical device for manual training. We combined the advantages of this skill trainer with the near to reality assembly of a cardiac catheterization laboratory (Cath-lab) by connecting it to a full scale simulator (HPS, METI, Sarasota, FL). We present two methods of synchronizing the heartbeat between both simulation devices. Method A-the hardware solution-uses the electrocardiogram-synchronization signal of the H…

Epidural hematoma after cochlear implantation in a 2.5-year-old boy.

2005

OBJECTIVE Report a case of an epidural hematoma after cochlear implantation in a 2.5-year-old boy, the diagnostic and therapeutical emergency management, as well as the postinterventional course and rehabilitation of the child. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective case review. PATIENT Two and a half-year-old boy, suffering from early onset, profound sensorineural hearing loss had been diagnosed at an age of 1.5 years, which had been more severe on the right side initially, but had progressed to bilateral deafness. INTERVENTION AND COMPLICATION: Cochlear implantation on the left side, followed up by an extensive epidural hematoma, causing intracranial compression with a midline shift of 15 mm to the r…

Second trimester uterine arteries pulsatility index is a function of placental pathology and provides insights on stillbirth aetiology: A multicenter…

2022

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between maternal vascular malperfusions (MVM) and second trimester uterine arteries pulsatility index (UtA-PI) in cases of stillbirth (SB), compared to live-birth (LB) matched controls. Methods: This was a multicentre, observational, matched case-control study performed at five referral maternity centres over a 4-year period including SB and LB control pregnancies at high-risk for preeclampsia (PE) and/or fetal growth restriction (FGR), matched and stratified for UtA-PI MoM quartiles values of the SB cases. Logistic regression was used to assess the rates of each MVM finding, within each increasing MoM quartile subcate…

CK-BB as indicator of prenatal brain-cell injury in fetuses with absent or reverse end-diastolic flow velocities of the umbilical arteries

1994

The purpose of this study is to determine the levels of brain type isoenzyme of creatine kinase (CK-BB) as a possible indicator of a pre-existing intrauterine brain-cell damage in cord blood sera of fetuses with preceding absent or reverse end-diastolic flow velocities of the umbilical arteries (AREDFV). CK-BB isoenzyme activities were determined in umbilical cord sera of 13 newborn infants with preceding AREDFV and in 14 fetuses with low end-diastolic flow velocities (LEDFV) of the umbilical arteries. 50 newborn infants with elective cesarean section and normal umbilical artery blood flow velocity waveforms were used as controls. Two-tailed Student's t-test and Fischer's exact test were us…

Prevalence, risk factor burden, and severity of coronary artery disease in patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia hospitalized for …

2019

Individuals with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) are at high risk of early myocardial infarction (MI). However, coronary artery disease (CAD) burden of FH remains not well described, especially for French patients. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of FH and severity of CAD from a large database of a French regional registry of acute MI.All consecutive patients hospitalized for an acute MI in a multicenter database from 2001 to 2017 were considered. FH was diagnosed using an algorithm adapted from the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria. The prevalence and clinical features of FH and the severity of CAD were assessed.Among the 11,624 patients included i…

Coronary artery calcium score on low-dose computed tomography for lung cancer screening

2013

Aim: To evaluate the feasibility of coronary artery calcium score (CACS) on low-dose non-gated chest CT (ngCCT). Methods: Sixty consecutive individuals (30 males; 73 ± 7 years) scheduled for risk stratification by means of unenhanced ECG-triggered cardiac computed tomography (gCCT) underwent additional unenhanced ngCCT. All CT scans were performed on a 64-slice CT scanner (Somatom Sensation 64 Cardiac, Siemens, Germany). CACS was calculated using conventional methods/scores (Volume, Mass, Agatston) as previously described in literature. The CACS value obtained were compared. The Mayo Clinic classification was used to stratify cardiovascular risk based on Agatston CACS. Differences and corre…

Early calcification patterns of the iliac arteries and their relation to the arterial structure

1972

Gross calcifications of the common iliac and internal iliac arteries represent a common finding in newborn children and infants. In both arteries, the calcific deposits regularly appear in certain areas of the arterial luminal surface only, whereas the other parts of the arterial wall remain free of gross lesions even in cases with a pronounced calcification. In the common iliac artery, the lateral wall of the vessel and the adjacent sectors of the anterior and posterior wall represent the predilection site of calcific deposits. In the internal iliac artery, the gross calcifications have been regularly demonstrated in the dorso-medial wall. The predominant localisation of the calcification …

Non invasive imaging of coronary arteries with 64-slice CT and 1.5T MRI: challenging invasive techniques

2007

Non-invasive coronary artery imaging challenges any diagnostic modality, because of the complex and tortuous anatomy and cardiac contraction and respiration. Therefore, non-invasive coronary imaging requires high spatial and temporal resolution. Our purpose is to discuss the feasible applications in coronary imaging of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Multi-slice Computed Tomography (MSCT). Focus will be devoted to potential indications and clinical impact of MSCT because of the fast development and the important results recently reported, in particular with the recent introduction of 64-slice equipments. MSCT of the coronary arteries is a promising imaging modality for the assessment of coro…
