This is an introductory essay to the volume on the company of Peace with the related works of art and architecture commissioned by Sicilian preclars for the Palermo headquarters of the organism. The essay pulls the strings of the contributions present in the volu…

Organization

2020

Organization is the explanandum that philosophical and scientific theories take into account for objects, individuals and their assembly, whose structure is characterized by the interdependence of parts to such an extent that it cannot be explained through decomposition. Organization is a critical attribute of nearly, minimally and not decomposable systems. The more interdependent are the parts, the more integrated is the system. Correspondingly, the organization can be intended as the mark of the trade-off between the interaction among parts or sub-systems and within them. Organization may come about in many forms. the concept of organization has been brought in many domains to advocate th…

RNA marker modifications reveal the necessity for rigorous preparation protocols to avoid artifacts in epitranscriptomic analysis

2021

Abstract The accurate definition of an epitranscriptome is endangered by artefacts resulting from RNA degradation after cell death, a ubiquitous yet little investigated process. By tracing RNA marker modifications through tissue preparation protocols, we identified a major blind spot from daily lab routine, that has massive impact on modification analysis in small RNAs. In particular, m6,6A and Am as co-varying rRNA marker modifications, appeared in small RNA fractions following rRNA degradation in vitro and in cellulo. Analysing mouse tissue at different time points post mortem, we tracked the progress of intracellular RNA degradation after cell death, and found it reflected in RNA modific…

A dynamic business modelling approach to design and experiment new business venture strategies

2018

Abstract Business Modelling has evolved as a key activity to reflect new business venture strategy by framing the way a firm will operate and how it will function in achieving its goals (e.g., profitability, growth, innovation, social impact). However, scholars and practitioners have criticized the adoption of a too static perspective in the design and use of conventional Business Model representations. Such a static perspective prevents nascent entrepreneurs experimenting with their Business Models and, as a result, identifying the most effective strategies, especially in terms of business sustainability and profitability. In this paper, we argue that combining conventional Business Model …

Clerodane diterpenoids from Salvia splendens.

2006

Four new clerodane diterpenoids, salvisplendins A-D (1-4), have been isolated from an acetone extract of the flowers of SalVia splendens, together with an artifact (5), arising from salvisplendin D (4) by addition of diazomethane, and the already known clerodane olearin (6). The structures of the new compounds (1-5) were established mainly by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic studies and, in the case of salvisplendin A (1), by chemical correlation with splenolide B (7). Complete 1H and 13C NMR assignments for olearin (6), not published hitherto, are also reported.

Designing Transport Supporting Services Together with Users with Intellectual Disabilities

2020

Transportation is an important yet challenging aspect in terms of mobility for persons with intellectual disabilities (ID). Despite positive implications of designing services with users, persons with ID are rarely given the opportunity to be involved in such design processes. In this action design research (ADR) study we involve persons with ID in the design through observations, photovoice interviews and in a staged, yet naturalistic user enactments on a bus. Our research contributes with design insights on transport supporting services and insights on user involvement of persons with ID in ADR. The three ADR cycles showed that people with ID is a heterogenous group of users and as such e…

Design e narrazioni

2022

The text arises from the need to focus on the cognitive methodological and design implications of the concept of storytelling increasingly recurrent in our daily experience especially for the many forms of communication and cultural productions that are inspired by itSettore ICAR/13 - Disegno Industrialeit is a concept that also in theoretical reflection and design planning is feeding strongly innovative and evolutionary dimensions in the construction communication of meanings intangible content experiences and emotional values that overlap and intertwine with the tangible and functional expression of objects communicative artifacts spaces.. It proposes a cognitive path tangent to the development of "narratology" and the theories of narrationthus we come across a multiplicity of disciplinary connections affecting sociology psychology anthropology philosophy semiotics and of course history cinema journalism advertising up to corporate communication and political propaganda. It is an articulated panorama that today seems to expand more and more and far from being mainly addressed to theoretical issues increasingly seems to be modeled on application performative and design aspects.

Introduction to coronary imaging with 64-slice computed tomography

2005

The aim of this article is to illustrate the main technical improvements in the last generation of 64-row CT scanners and the possible applications in coronary angiography. In particular, we describe the new physical components (X-ray tube-detectors system) and the general scan and reconstruction parameters. We then define the scan protocols for coronary angiography with the new generation of 64-row CT scanners to enable radiologists to perform a CT study on the basis of the diagnostic possibilities.

Comparison of transflection and transmission FTIR imaging measurements performed on differentially fixed tissue sections

2015

The widespread and cost-effective use of transflection substrates in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging of clinical samples is affected by the presence of artefacts including the electric field standing wave (EFSW) and contributions from light dispersion. For IR-based diagnostics, the manifestation of undesirable artifacts can distort the spectra and lead to erroneous diagnosis. Nevertheless, there is no clear consensus in the literature about the degree of influence of these effects. The aim of this work is to contribute to this discussion by comparing transflection and transmission images of the same tissue. For this purpose two adjacent sections of the same tissue (lymphoma sample…

Pervasive access to MRI bias artifact suppression service on a grid.

2009

Bias artifact corrupts magnetic resonance images in such a way that the image is afflicted by illumination variations. Some of the authors proposed the Exponential Entropy Driven - Homomorphic Unsharp Masking (E2D-HUM) algorithm that corrects this artifact without any a priori hypothesis about the tissues or the Magnetic Resonance image modality. Moreover, E2D-HUM does not care about the body part under examination and does not require any particular training task. People who want to use this algorithm, which is Matlab-based, have to set their own computers in order to execute it. Furthermore, they have to be Matlab-skilled to exploit all the features of the algorithm. In our work we propos…
