Beginners' musical instrument practice at home A survey of music-school teachers

2022

The day-to-day instrumental work of the students of conservatories and music schools seems to be an essential condition for a fulfilling and quality musical practice. This survey, addressed to conservatory and music teachers, attempts to understand how this instrumental practice is organized at home by students and families. It deals with student autonomy, personal time and workload, the management of oral instructions, the use of written materials, the methods used to help students in difficulty as well as the role of reprimand and self-assessment during the instrumental lesson. On the teachers' side, it points to a significant use of reprimand to deal with insufficient work situations and…

L'orientation professionnelle des diplômés des Beaux-Arts : étude des stratégies de positionnement

2006

The artistic labour market has specific features (flexibility, self-employment, precariousness, multi-activity...) that make it an interesting field to study. Graduates of the Fine Art schools are presented on this market with a diploma of Bac+5 level. They are however far from constituting a homogeneous population. This study shows how differentiated positioning choices are linked with curriculum and personal characteristics of the graduates. Thus, whereas the artistic careers remain given, in the imaginary collective, by the idea of vocation, this article tries to prolong the analyses on individual strategies on the entering on the labour market by showing that the Graduate of the Fine Ar…

Women in the artistic professions : Contribution of sociology to the analysis of the processes of “social closure”

2009

International audience; The artistic professions evolved gradually towards intellectual professions. In this movement of intellectualization of creative activities, women who commonly practiced these professions in the Middle Ages lost their right during the XVIIth century. A historical perspective explains why men are strongly represent in these professions in the functions of experts, juries, artists, art critics, editors, producers, collectors, art merchants, historians… Since the profession is dominated by male judgement, our research will address the professional assertion of women. In particular, we will defend the position that informal obstacles prevent them from existing as author,…

2020

Three artists in exile focuses on the historical diaspora provoked by the Spanish civil war (1936- 1939), and how it influenced three prominent figures of the cultural scene of that period: the writer and typographer Max Aub Mohrenwitz (Paris, 1903-Ciudad de Mexico, 1972); the architect Félix Candela Outeriño (Madrid, 1910-Raleigh, US, 1977); and the artist Josep Renau Berenguer (Valencia, 1907-Berlín, 1982). They are the three protagonists of this article, who were simultaneously living in Mexico during the exile and who made notable contributions in the fields of arts and humanities (Max Aub), architecture (Félix Candela), and graphic design and photomontage (Josep Renau).
