ABSTRACTThis article examines the experience of being seen and analyzes its central role in the formation of a coherent sense of self. Tove Jansson’s short story from 1962, ‘The Invisible Child’, serves as the red thread of the article, and the story is analyzed in the light of Donald Winnicott’s work on social mirroring. The analysis is enriched by the psychoanalytic insights of Veikko Tahka and Heinz Kohut, and complemented by Axel Honneth’s philosophical elaborations as well as by recent developmental findings as presented by Vasudevi Reddy. RC Columns Strengthened with Steel Angles and Battens: Experimental Results and Design Procedure

In this paper, an analytical model for the design of axially loaded strengthened RC columns with steel angles and battens is presented. Cases of directly loaded and not directly loaded steel angles are considered. The model considers the contribution in confinement pressures caused by transverse battens and steel angles and the contribution in terms of the load-carrying capacity of steel angles subjected to axial force and the bending moment. An experimental investigation on the compressive behavior of eight short, confined, RC columns externally strengthened with steel angles and steel battens with various pitches was carried out, and has been utilized as support for the analytical model. …

AbstractThis paper studies what goals individuals pursue when enrolling in doctoral studies and how it affects the characteristics of the university they find important for choosing it and information sources on doctoral programme they find useful. It uses data collected in 2014 from PhD students and PhD candidates in 14 universities in Latvia and from students born in Latvia but studying abroad. Este artículo rescata la faceta más artística de Vicente Llorens que surgió tras entrar en contacto con los artistas del exilio, también fue coleccionista y visitante de museos. Comenzó con la organización de exposiciones y concluyó con la reconstrucción del discurso artístico de la diáspora republicana. Una de sus principales líneas de trabajo fue la discontinuidad de la cultura española. En su afán por reconstruirla para dar testimonio de quiénes fueron los intelectuales exiliados tras la Guerra Civil, su trabajo se convirtió en el punto de referencia de estudios artísticos posteriores.
Who Dares to Wear Trousers? Adoption of a New Fashion by Finnish Women 1920–1980

Trousers have traditionally been men’s clothing that women have not been allowed to wear. In this article, I study the history of women’s wearing of trousers in the twentieth-century Finnish context by analysing women’s own memories and experiences of the trouser trend. My research material consists of written reminiscences, which I use, first, to reconstruct the social and cultural factors that framed women’s choices. Second, I approach their personal preferences and choices by analysing their narrative identities in the context of dress.
