Konfliktinjälkeiset kulttuuriympäristöt, muisti ja materiaalisuus

2016

Pohjoisia sota-ajan muistoja käsittelevässä traumaromaanissa Pahan morsian (Ritva-Kaija Laitinen, 1986) teoksen päähenkilö Laura muistelee jatkosodanaikaista rakkauttaan saksalaissotilaaseen.

‘Because I point to myself as the hog’ : interactional achievement of moral decisions in a classroom

2016

Abstract Drawing on the conversation analytic and sociocultural perspectives, this study investigates children's situated moral negotiations in classroom peer interaction in the absence of a teacher. The conversation analytic methodology is used to operationalise some of the key elements of the sociocultural perspective on moral development. In this way, this study enables readers to observe and study the semiotic, conversational and interactional mediations of moral functioning in real life, with the example of children's moral practices. The empirical analysis is based on video-recorded sequences in which primary school children work with the rules of a counting rhyme which is banned by t…

Indirect chronology method employing rare earth elements to identify Sagunto Castle mortar construction periods

2017

A novel indirect chronology method has been developed to identify Sagunto Castle construction periods. The method is based on the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine rare earth elements (REE) and other trace elements in mortars. Additionally, a no destructive geochemical analysis based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was employed for major elements determination. Collected chemical data were processed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to highlight any differences among the mortars belonging to different buildings and construction periods. The results show that PCA analysis permits to discriminate construction periods according to mortar sample REE …

Écriture et perception des grandes formes en musique contemporaine et, en particulier, chez Roger Reynolds. « Le cristal et la flamme »

2003

This PhD addresses the issue of musical time and form in the second half of the XXth century with the joint perspective of composition and perception. The first chapter describes composer’s main conceptions of musical time, compositional strategies, functions and formal models, as well as the main musicological theories concerning musical form. The second chapter is devoted to the semiotic square of musical form (definition, typological and syntagmatic approach). The third chapter is dedicated to R. Reynolds’The Angel of Death, a work that allows us to compare writing and perception. The fourth chapter reviews the main studies and theories forged by psychology around this question, and pres…

50 ans de psychologie de la musique

2011

Il fascino dell’intuizione femminile: Marie Trautmann (in Jaëll), pianista, pedagoga e ricercatrice

2020

Over the centuries, the differences between genders have led to strong disparities for the assertion of women’s artistic value. In the history of music, in particular, many women musicians did not get the right recognition because of a cultural context that could not enhance their work. This is the case of Marie Trautmann, better known as Marie Jaëll (1846-1925), wife of the Austrian concert pianist Alfred Jaëll (1832-1882). Trautmann is a 19th century woman-musician and an important figure in the history of music still to be discovered, not only for her activity as concert pianist, composer, pedagogue, but mainly for her empirical research work, which aimed at improving the piano technique…

Rhythmic exercises as tools for rehabilitation following cerebellar stroke: A case study integrating music therapy and physiotherapy techniques

2022

Introduction: This article explores the use of music and multisensory stimuli in the construction of compensatory neural networks for motoric functioning in a patient recovering from cerebellar strokes (CS). This study aimed to address the real-world clinical concern of patients having a passive role in therapy, by arousing the client’s interest and self-motivation in rehabilitation. Method: The article presents a case study of a CS survivor, using data derived from rehabilitation sessions combining music therapy techniques with physiotherapy techniques to improve the fluency and accuracy of his motor performance. Qualitative and quantitative data are used to identify, describe, and evaluat…

“Who’s Afraid of the Dark?”: The Ironic Self-Stereotype of the Ethnic Other in Finnish Rap Music

2017

Drawing on recent sociolinguistic work on globalization and superdiversity, this chapter explores the multisemiotic and ironic construction of the self-stereotype of the ethnic Other in a Finnish rap music video. Because Finland and Finnish hip-hop are still ethnically relatively homogeneous, people of migrant background, such as rap artist Musta Barbaari (Black Barbarian), need to negotiate their belonging in various ways. In the video, he deliberately constructs himself as the ethnicized and sexualized Other to highlight prejudice, discrimination and racism. In doing this, he voices societal critique and dissatisfaction – and speaks for multiculturalism and tolerance in (super)diversifyin…

All Eyes on Me : Behaving as Soloist in Duo Performances Leads to Increased Body Movements and Attracts Observers’ Visual Attention

2020

Duo musicians exhibit a broad variety of bodily gestures, but it is unclear how soloists’ and accompanists’ movements differ and to what extent they attract observers’ visual attention. In Experiment 1, seven musical duos’ body movements were tracked while they performed two pieces in two different conditions. In a congruent condition, soloist and accompanist behaved according to their expected musical roles; in an incongruent condition, the soloist behaved as accompanist and vice versa. Results revealed that behaving as soloist, regardless of the condition, led to more, smoother, and faster head and shoulder movements over a larger area than behaving as accompanist. Moreover, accompanists …

Who enjoys listening to sad music and why?

2011

although people generally avoid negative emotional experiences in general, they often enjoy sadness portrayed in music and other arts. The present study investigated what kinds of subjective emotional experiences are induced in listeners by sad music, and whether the tendency to enjoy sad music is associated with particular personality traits. One hundred forty-eight participants listened to 16 music excerpts and rated their emotional responses. As expected, sadness was the most salient emotion experienced in response to sad excerpts. However, other more positive and complex emotions such as nostalgia, peacefulness, and wonder were also evident. Furthermore, two personality traits – Opennes…
