'It's like a Sentence before the Sentence' - Exploring the Pains and Possibilities of Waiting for Imprisonment
2020
This article explores the implications of the ‘imprisonment queue’ in Norway. Based on interview data (N = 200), we show that while interviewees waiting to serve their sentences enjoy certain benefits such as being able to prepare for or negotiate the terms of their imprisonment, they also suffer from uncertainty and powerlessness. The suspension of their lives while they wait hinders them in pursuing their ground projects, things that really matter to them. This peculiar phenomenon has not received attention from prison scholars generally, as well as scholars writing on Nordic Exceptionalism specifically. This article addresses that gap and poses questions about the relative mildness of th…
Yhtiöittäminen – valtion rakennetun kulttuuriperinnön haaksirikko?
2015
Ympäristönsuojelussa on tapahtunut viidenkymmenen vuoden aikana suuri muutos viranomaislähtöisestä suojelusta yhteisölähtöiseksi suojeluksi. Miten tähän on tultu? Artikkelissamme esimerkkikohteena on Jyväskylän yliopiston Seminaarinmäki ja sen Villa Rana -rakennus. peerReviewed

Current Social and Rangeland Access Trends among Pastoralists in the Western Algerian Steppe
2021
International audience; In the western Algerian steppe, the public authorities have carried out actions aimed at rural development (agricultural development programs) and combating desertification (grazing reserves) to counter the significant and rapid loss of vegetation cover of pastures by overgrazing, and the consequent impacts on local livelihoods. In the Rogassa area, these actions have impacted land tenure and the ancestral and collective way of land use and access. These changes have caused transformations in lifestyle and pasture management. This research aims to characterize how such changes are affecting local pastoralists and what their perceptions are about them. A selective sam…
Exploring early adolescents’ stressful IT use experiences
2022
Early adolescents are accustomed to using information technology (IT) for different purposes as a part of their everyday life. While IT use can provide many benefits, it can also include negative experiences, such as feelings of stress (i.e. technostress). Considering that young IT users’ technostress perspectives have remained limited in the literature, this paper attempts to contrast their experiences with aspects from earlier research. A qualitative content analysis of semi-structured interviews with 31 primary and secondary school students reveals that early adolescents have encountered stressful IT use experiences that vary based on the degree of stress. The experiences relate to diffe…

2016
In Finland, the national Core Curriculum for Basic Education defines the learning objectives along with the numerical grade to be given for good competence in each school subject in the final phase of basic education. This study investigates the relationship between the grades given to students in mother tongue and literature at different schools and the same students’ reading l…
